Walden receives Lena Wood Warren Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Jessica Walden, left, was recently awarded the Lena Wood Warren Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

Walden, an associate degree nursing student, is congratulated by Lena Wood Warren. This scholarship is available to a PN or ADN nursing student who has completed at least one semester in the nursing program. The recipient has a 3.0 GPA or above, has an outstanding clinical performance as determined by clinical instructor, shows financial need and demonstrates leadership abilities.

Runoff Election Tuesday

A very important runoff election is set to happen Tuesday to decide who will be the Republican candidate for the Sheriff’s Office as well as the Clerk of Court for Greenwood County.

Seeking your support for Sheriff are Tony Davis (incumbent) and Dennis Kelly.  The winner will face the Democratic candidate Arnie Fisher in November.

Also facing a runoff are Greenwood County Clerk of Court candidates Angie Woodhurst (incumbent) and Chastity Copeland.

Every vote county, please take the time to go to the polls and cast your vote on Tuesday!

Volunteer with Greenwood Animal Shelter

Volunteer help at the Greenwood County Animal Shelter is vital for saving unwanted and abandoned animals in our community.  Volunteers are needed to perform a variety of services, including kennel enrichment, socialization and dog walking, assist at community adoption events, fund raising, administrative tasks, helping with animal transport, bathing and grooming, providing basic training to dogs, general or spot cleaning kennels or sharing other skills.

To become a volunteer, join their Volunteer Orientation set for Saturday, July 9 at 10 a.m. at 239 Wilbanks Cir, Greenwood.

Support of Re-Election for Sheriff Tony Davis

I was disappointed to see that my friend Sheriff Tony Davis did not win outright the primary, but he is in a runoff and we all need to support Tony. I have known Sheriff Davis for approximately 40 years, first meeting him when I was working narcotics for SLED and Tony was working for Sheriff Giles Daniels in Greenwood. I grew up in Edgefield County, so we had many interests in common.

Ware Shoals' 4th of July Celebration

The Town of Ware Shoals will host their 2016 4th of July on Monday.  Local musical talent kicks off at noon.  Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and enjoy some great entertainment.  A variety of food vendors and concessions will be available. 

Coyote Moon takes the stage from 3-5pm followed by OUTSHYNE 6-10pm.  A great firework show will begin right after 10pm.

The historic Abbeville Opera House brings to the stage a hit Broadway comedy loosely inspired from a famous exchange between dancer Isadora Duncan and playwright George Bernard Shaw. Duncan suggested the two should produce a child because "with your mind and my body, think what a person it would be."
