Ninety Six Primary students get lessons in horticulture

First graders from Ninety Six Primary School went to visit the Horticulture class at Ninety Six High School! Ms. Lauritzen and her students had stations prepared where first graders could plant three different types of seeds, visit the garden and visit the chicken coop.  The HS students talked with first graders about parts of plants, plant needs, and the life cycle of plants. They learned so much and enjoyed this special treat!

Greenwood Chamber's Women's Leadership Council presents Let's Talk, Listen & Learn Program

Lander men's tennis team moves up to No. 4 in national rankings

The Lander men's tennis team improved one spot to No. 4 this week in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings that were released Wednesday night.

In addition to the national team ranking, three Lander singles players and one doubles team are also ranked.

The Bearcats are 17-5 overall and are awaiting the pairings for the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament.

Ware Shoals High Golf defeats Laurens

In their match held on April 28, Ware Shoals High School boys golf team defeated Laurens by 6 strokes.  WSHS overall score was 170 to Laurens 176.

WSHS boy's golf team will be competing in the state golf tournament at Cheraw State Park Golf Course May 2-3 with a 12W/9L regular season record.

Individual scores: 

Ware Shoals:  Damion Moragne 41, Johnna Magaha 41, Timothy Hudson 42, Brandon Evans 46 and Colby Burdette 49.

Laurens:  Patton Croker 41, Johnathan Finley 42, Devon Freeman 44, Cade Patterson 49, Brady Davis 50 and Hannah Finley 58.

ACS Relay For Life May 6

Mother’s Day weekend is fast approaching and there will be many activities happening in and around our area. On May 6th the American Cancer Society will host its annual Relay For Life of Greenwood County. Relay has been a tradition for over 20 years in Greenwood. WE will be celebrating our 15th year at the YMCA on Calhoun Rd. We are very thankful for the wonderful support and relationship over the years. The event will start at 6:00pm and end at midnight. We invite you and your family to come and support the teams that have worked hard to raise funds to battle cancer.

Woofstock 2016, A Music Benefit for the Humane Society of Greenwood

A music festival to benefit the Humane Society of Greenwood is being held on Sunday, May 8, starting at 6pm, at the driving range at The Links at Stoney Point. The bands performing are 3rd Avenue, The Magic Band, and The Deacons of Swing.  Admission is a donation to the Humane Society of Greenwood.

Historical Fiction Book Club Meeting

he Historical Fiction Book Club is set to meet on Tuesday, May 10 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at The Museum, 106 Main Street in Greenwood.

All readers are welcome to join our Historical Fiction Book Club! In the second meeting of 2016, we will be discussing Enemy Women by Paulette Jiles. This Civil War era novel is a story of family, sacrifice, and survival. Book Club meetings include delicious refreshments and an interesting discussion.

Chastity Copeland launched her career with the Greenwood County Clerk of Court office in August of 1999 until she parted in June of 2013. While with the clerk’s office, she was given the responsibility to be the Deputy Clerk in the general sessions department.  Her tasks included, but were not limited to, maintaining all pending general sessions files, bench warrants, and data transfer of time sensitive information to the State Judicial Department.

Sheriff Tony Davis seeks re-election

I, Tony Davis, am announcing my candidacy to run for re-election as Sheriff of Greenwood County, and issue the following statement:

Born and raised in Greenwood, after high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served two tours in Viet Nam.  Along with other medals, I was awarded two Purple Hearts for injuries received in combat.  Following my honorable discharge, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Lander University.

McCravy Announces His Candidacy for SC House 13

John McCravy recently announced he will throw his hat in the ring for the 13th District House Seat.

 “I am running because we need to stand firm for the values and heritage of the people of District 13,” McCravy said when asked why he is running. He added, “Our state's infrastructure is crumbling. Special interest and government agencies are clamoring for your money. We need to stand firm for laws that protect SC.”
