Lander Athletics and Lander University Military and Veteran Services have partnered to permanently reserve a front-row parking spot for U.S. service members wounded in combat by painting a parking spot purple, the color of the Purple Heart, this Saturday, April 21, 2018 during an outdoor ceremony at the Lander University Jeff May Complex.
The Purple Heart is awarded to armed forces members who were wounded in combat. If the service member is killed in action or dies as a result of the wounds, it is presented posthumously to the next of kin.
"We're committed to those who have selflessly served our great nation and this spot is a visual symbol of the pact we have with them," said Lander athletics director Brian Reese.
"Lander Athletics has continued to lead the charge on campus to fully support our efforts to continue our mission as a University to honor past, present, and future veterans of our great country." said Lander Director of Military & Veteran Services
The space, located in Jeff May Sports Complex by Dolny Stadium (baseball) and Doug Spears Field (softball), will be formally dedicated during the Lander softball team's Military Appreciation Day on Saturday, April 21 2018.
