Doctor's Prescription - Physical Fitness
What is physical fitness, and do I need it, or even want it to be a part of my life?  Physical fitness is often defined as the ability of your body systems to work together efficiently to allow you to be healthy and effectively perform activities of daily living.  A fit person can perform daily activities with the least amount of effort and still have the energy and vigor to enjoy sports, and even respond to emergency situations.

Naming Names in the 113th Congress
I never gave much thought to Congressional names until Anthony Weiner hit the headlines in 2011, as a disgraced member of the do-nothing 112th Congress.

Now we have the 113th Congress with its 535 voting members – 435 in the House of Representatives (plus six non-voting delegates), and 100 from the Senate. Are there any members in this batch of political gems who also have interesting names? It turns out quite a few do.

When is a Footlong not a Foot Long?

The answer, apparently, is when it’s a Subway sandwich. It seems these tasty, elongated snacks haven’t been measuring up to vigilant customers’ expectations lately.

Armed with their trusty yardsticks, pernickety patrons around the country have resolutely sunk the Sub’s promotional promise of being one foot long (or exactly 12 inches for the dimensionally challenged). Many of the $5 Subway sandwiches have been “weighing in” at a stunted 11 inches.

Family Dinner = Better Grades?
I am old enough to remember the TV show “Leave It To Beaver”. The Cleaver family gathered around the dinner table each evening and shared a meal. June would be looking good in apron and pearls, Ward always fashionable in a sweater and tie, Beaver and Wally well behaved and scrubbed squeaky clean - the very embodiment of the quintessential mid 20th century American family. My childhood memories of family dinners are somewhat different.

Take Time for Family
Family can mean different things to different people. Most people define family as their parents, siblings, spouse and children. But for some people family could mean their pets, their close friends or the people from their place of worship...read more.

Hidden Treasures: Dawn on Hunting Island

As with any of my planned sunrise photo shoots, I’m up by five, ready to grab my gear, all carefully packed the night before, grab a cup of coffee in the hotel lobby, and head out the door to get my destination as false dawn illuminates the eastern horizon.

Hidden Treasures: Botany Bay...The Jewel of Edisto Island

On a recent trek to South Carolina’s beautiful coastline, I had Edisto Island pegged as my destination. Friends and co-workers had told me of its beautiful scenes but also warned that there wasn’t “much to the area”; but that is precisely what inspired my desire to visit the area. I’m not interested in the commercialized tourist-style getaways. My nature-loving soul yearns for wild expansive spaces where one can breathe in fresh, untrammeled air and revel in the simplistic beauty of natural surroundings. Edisto was exactly what I wanted.

One of South Carolina's hidden treasures...Port Royal

I’m often asked the question how I choose the locations for my adventures, and each time I proffer this response: it all depends on what I am hoping to shoot on my photographic safaris. On this particular venture, I yearned once again to smell the salty sea air, feel the wind in my face and witness the sunrise on or near wild, pristine Hunting Island...read more.
