I am an honest, hardworking, responsible citizen of Clinton. I have always paid my power bills on time (provided through the City of Clinton), however with my never-ending list of responsibilities as a mother, teacher, homeowner and graduate student, I let the due date pass this month.
I did not receive any form of reminder as in a shut-off notice or courtesy call, yet I arrived home on December 11, shortly after 5pm to find my power shut off. I had the money to pay the bill, yet I honestly forgot to pay. I called the after-hours number provided on the bill and was informed by the dispatcher that "there was nothing they could do tonight" and "all I do is answer the phone", even after explaining the fact that I had a three-year-old child in the home.
My child and I were forced to attempt to spend the night in a cold, dark house during the typical December chill. We had no heat nor light, yet I leave for work at 6:15 am each morning. Considering the fact that I was only 10 days behind (NOT a month or more), have a small child, and always paid my bills, I was given no mercy by the city of Clinton.
I was told that I had to wait until the next morning to take care of my payment. When my husband brought the payment to the city the next morning, he paid the balance in full. When he inquired about why they sent no prior notice of cut-off, the clerk quite rudely told him that "we are not required to send shut off notices". How incredibly inconsiderate to the citizens of Clinton...to the taxpayers!
If they won't give any mercy to the small children in the winter months, do they do the same to the elderly? The disabled? Those with infants? Those who are struggling to support their families, yet have to choose between food and electricity? This situation has brought to light an absolute travesty.
What the city of Clinton has told me loud and clear is this: "WE DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR RESIDENTS...WE JUST WANT YOUR MONEY, AND NOW!!"

Laura, I agree that you should have been sent a notice. However, it's because of dishonest people that these things happen. Anyone could call and say that they have a baby or elderly adult living in their home and have their power turned back on if that was Clinton's policy. In this day and age, one never knows if people are taking advantage or telling the truth. You seem to be an honest person, and if everyone were like you, things like this probably wouldn't happen. Again, the power company should be required to send at least one notice before shutting it off because of these type of reasons. I guess you just have to be extra careful not to forget.

Do the citizens in Clinton have an actual Duke Power facility where you can pay your bill? We don't and I think that is crazy. Duke power truly does have the power. I've had the same thing happen to me. Hope you got your power back on. Merry Christmas.
