Self Regional Healthcare welcomed three new members to its Board of Trustees during the September meeting and elected officers. S.C. Governor Nikki Haley appointed cardiologist Dr. Walter Ennis James III, manufacturing executive John B. Thompson, and educational leader Gerald Witt to six-year board terms.

The Self Regional Board of Trustees is comprised of individuals with a diverse set of skills and expertise who are charged with setting the strategic direction of the health system and improving the region’s overall health.

“Our board warmly welcomed its new members and our leadership for the coming year and is looking forward to the opportunities we face to continue improving the health of our communities while sustaining the strength of our organization and the quality of services we provide,” said Jim Pfeiffer, Self Regional President and CEO.

About the New Board Members

Walter Ennis James, III, M.D.

Dr. James, a board-certified cardiologist at Piedmont Cardiology Associates, is a returning board member (his first term was 2000-2006) and an active civic leader. He volunteers with United Ministries’ Good Shepherd free medical clinic in Laurens, donating his time to treat uninsured patients who need medical care. He is a past president of the S.C. chapter of the American Heart Association.

John B. Thompson

Mr. Thompson is the Plant Manager for Eaton Corporation in Greenwood, which manufactures hydraulics pumps. He is active on the boards of the United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville counties (serving as a past campaign chairman), Piedmont Technical College and United Center for Community Care. Mr. Thompson is also on Lander University’s Board of Visitors.

Gerald Witt

Mr. Witt is the assistant superintendent for Administration for Greenwood School District 50, which is comprised of 16 different schools serving more than 9,000 students annually. He is a board member for the Greenwood YMCA, Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Board of Deacons for Mount Moriah Baptist Church.

New Board Leadership

The board elected John W. Pillman as its new chairman. Mr. Pillman is the President at VELUX Greenwood Inc., which manufactures skylights for residential and commercial applications, tubular skylights and roof flashing systems.

Mr. Pillman succeeds past chairman Ron Millender, who, along with Joe Chandler and Dr. David Isenhower, is rotating off the board.

The board elected three additional officers, including: David L. Bell as vice-chairman, Leonard J. Bornemann as treasurer and Dr. Carlos M. Manalich as secretary.
