Hartsville, SC – Five students from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) won the team championship at the South Carolina Chess Association’s State Scholastic Chess Tournament in Mt. Pleasant on February 25, 2017. The team’s winning score of 14.5 surpassed defending champion D. W. Daniel High School, who finished second with 11.0.
The winning score was based on the top four combined scores of the GSSM Chess Team. Team members are Junior Thien-An Bui, child of June Phan and Phuong Bui of York County; Senior Jacob Folks, child of Sara and Steven Folks of Richland County; Junior Michael F. Gresko, child of Cindy and Michael Gresko of Greenwood County; Senior Lam Nguyen, child of Lan Lam and Linh Nguyen of Richland County; Junior Brennan Ravan, child of Sarah and Scott Ravan of Richland County; Junior Victor Ruan, child of Ying Chen and Zhao Ruan of Chesterfield County; and Senior Jeffrey A. Russell, child of Kendra and Jeff Russell of York County.
Competing against 37 other students in the high school division, Ravan earned the individual third place trophy, Nguyen earned the fifth place trophy and Russell took home the ninth place trophy.
“Our players made us proud of both their skill and their good sportsmanship,” said Dr. Clyde Smith, GSSM physics instructor and faculty advisor of the Chess Team. “This took me back to when our students won our first state championship in 1993. D.W. Daniel High School also has a great chess legacy, and it is pleasure to compete against people of their caliber.”
This is the twelfth time GSSM has won the SC State Scholastic Chess Tournament since 1988.
