Palmetto Girls Sing! (PGS), a girls choir based in Greenwood, performed as a part of the National Children’s Festival Chorus at the legendary Carnegie Hall on Monday, June 18. The girls joined children’s choirs from other parts of the county and participated in three days of vocal workshops and rehearsals with conductor Anthony Trecek-King at the Westin near Times Square in New York City.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these young ladies to perform on the stage in the famed Carnegie Hall,” explained PGS director Amy Fennell.

“Many of our girls hadn’t been to New York before, and it was a first time flying for some, so it was quite an experience!” Fennell and assistant director Nickie Murphy led the group of 33 girls, and they were accompanied by another 30+ chaperons, mostly parents.

“We have been saying for a few years that we would take a girls’ trip to New York to celebrate my niece’s 13th birthday,” recounted Patty Culbreth, the aunt of PGS member Claren Johnston. “Not only did we get a chance to take the trip a year early, we also got to see Claren perform at Carnegie Hall with her friends.”

Fennell was effusive in her praise of the girls. “I couldn’t be prouder! These girls worked so very hard, from fundraising events to extra rehearsals, they came together as a team.”

“We were so very fortunate to have the support of a tremendous group of individuals, businesses and organizations. The girls worked hard, and the sponsorships helped match the girls’ efforts and made the trip affordable,” expressed Fennell. The sponsors included First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood, Piedmont Family Dentistry, Blyth Funeral Home, McCaslan’s Book Store & Office Supply, Merle Norman Cosmetic Studio, Michelle Powers, Attorney at Law, The Greenwood Women’s Club, The Greenwood Festival Chorale, The Star Fort Military Officers Association and many individual patrons.

Fennell founded Palmetto Girls Sing! in the spring of 2015. The group is an outreach of First Presbyterian Church. Auditions for the 2018-2019 season will be held at First Presbyterian Church on August 5 and 6.  Contact Amy Fennell for a registration form and an audition time.

Palmetto Girls Sing! seeks to enrich the lives of girls through diverse and high quality choral music. An emphasis is placed on the joy of singing and its importance in our world. Palmetto Girls Sing! offers girls opportunities for personal, social, spiritual and artistic growth as the girls learn vocal technique, vocal health, music reading and performance skills.

Palmetto Girls Sing! presents its music, both sacred and secular, to the glory of God. As an outreach of First Presbyterian Church, Palmetto Girls Sing! is a non-profit organization.
