Lander readying for Black History Month

Students and public alike will have ample opportunity to explore the history of African American History culture during Lander University’s annual Black History Month.

Beginning on January 31 and lasting throughout February, the university will celebrate and educate students in many different ways.

“Some of the events are fun in nature and some are educational,” said Mike Rapay, director of Student Activities & Engagement. “But many of them are designed and executed by student organizations.”

Scheduled programs that are open to the public include:

Panel:  What Does Black History Mean to Me

7 p.m., Jan. 31

Abney Cultural Center Auditorium

Free Admission

Celebration of African American Chefs

11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Feb. 19

The Dining Hall (Grier Student Center)

Cost:  $8.84 (or student meal plan)

Guest Speaker – Black State Superintendents

7 p.m., Feb. 27

Abney Cultural Center Auditorium

Free Admission – Open to community

“At Lander, we are very proud of the student involvement with Black History Month,” Rapay said. “And we wanted to have things that would be attractive to everybody throughout the whole month.”

Students at the university will have additional opportunities to learn about Black History Month by participating in a diversity conference at USC, and attending campus events such as Step Afrika!, Open MIC Night, and an exhibit focusing on historical figures.
