No School For Springfield Students on Wednesday

Due to a power outage on Tuesday morning, there will be no school for students at Springfield Elementary on Wednesday, August 20th.

This morning at Springfield, there was a power outage at the school’s main electrical panel. All power was lost at the school and all students and staff were transported by District 50 buses to the Emerald High School gymnasium.

The Honors Program at Piedmont Technical College inducts first class

The Honors Program at Piedmont Technical College recently inducted its first class of students who will be seeking an Associate in Arts or an Associate in Science degree beginning with the fall 2014 semester.

“The Piedmont Technical College Honors Program was established to provide an innovative academic challenge for outstanding students,” said Kathryn Brackett, honors program director. “We are so happy to welcome this first group of students to begin this journey.”

Commencement at Piedmont Technical College Honors Graduates

The James Medford Family Event Center at Piedmont Technical College welcomed more than 325 Piedmont Technical College graduates for two commencement ceremonies to celebrate their accomplishments.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president, welcomed graduates, family and guests to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduates.

 “To each of the graduates, you had a dream and you fulfilled it. Now, what’s your next dream?” Brooks said. “I encourage you to dream, dream big and don’t give up.”

Bagwell Named VP for Academic Affairs at PTC

Piedmont Technical College President Dr. Ray Brooks has announced that Dr. Jack Bagwell has joined the college as the vice president for academic affairs.

Bagwell is a graduate of Winthrop University, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology. He earned his doctorate in educational studies from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2010.

Ward receives P.E.O Scholarship

Tess Ward, a recent graduate of Ninety Six High School was recently awarded the P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization) scholarship of $300.  Ward will attend coastal Carolina University this coming fall.

Interim accreditation report gives Lander a "clean bill of health"

Lander University received good news recently when it was notified that it met the core requirements, comprehensive standards and federal requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), as documented in its fifth-year interim accreditation report.

State Superintendent releases 2013-14 PASS results

COLUMBIA – Today, State Superintendent of Education Dr. Mick Zais announced that the results of the 2013-14 SC Palmetto Assessment of State Standards (PASS) for students in grades 3-8 have been released and can be viewed on the Department’s website.

Eight Local Nursing Students Awarded Scholarships from Self Regional Healthcare Foundation

Eight local students have each been awarded a $1,000 nursing scholarship from The Self Regional Healthcare Foundation at its annual nursing scholarship luncheon. The Foundation has two funds named in honor of two influential nurses who worked at Self Regional: the Mary Ella Ruff Nursing Scholarship fund and the Charlotte Blackwell Memorial Nursing Scholarship.

Dual Enrollment Student Gets a Head Start on a Career

The loss of a high school course turned into a great opportunity for one Laurens District High School graduate.

As a freshman, Braxton Michels was interested in the machine tool class offered at LDHS. However, when the teacher left to pursue other opportunities, the course was discontinued. But, Michels knew he wanted to enroll in some form of industrial or manufacturing curriculum.

Greenwood School District 50 Registration
Greenwood School District 50 is continuing to register students for the 2014-2015 school year.  New Child Development, New Kindergarten, and New First Grade Students should REGISTER as soon as possible.  The first day of school is August 19th and we would like for all of our students to be ready to learn the first day.

Piedmont Middle College Produces First Graduates

As the Class of 2014 celebrated their graduation from high school, 10 students from Ninety Six High School and McCormick High School were also earning an Associate in Arts degree from Piedmont Technical College. The students – five from Ninety Six and five from McCormick – were enrolled in the Piedmont Middle College.

SPARTANBURG, SC - Nalysha Adams of Greenwood graduated from the University of South Carolina Upstate during spring commencement

The University of South Carolina Upstate recognized 581 May graduates during commencement exercises held May 6, 2014 on the Quad behind the John C. Stockwell Administration Building.

A noisy physics demonstration for school children at Lander

The area behind Lander University’s Science Center took on the appearance of Cape Canaveral for a short time on the morning of July 10 when a trash can rocketed high above the campus as part of a controlled demonstration showing what can happen when pressure builds in a confined space.

Katrina Gonzalez of Greenwood named to the Spring Term Dean's List at Choate Rosemary Hall

Wallingford, CT - Katrina Gonzalez, daughter of Dr. Todd M. Gonzalez and Dr. Evangeline G. Gonzalez of Greenwood, was named to the Spring Term 2014 Dean's List at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, Connecticut. Choate Rosemary Hall is an independent secondary school enrolling 865 boarding and day students from 40 states and D.C., and 40 countries.

Clinton, S.C. - The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Board of Directors has granted full accreditation status to the Doctor of Pharmacy program at Presbyterian College. ACPE is the national agency for accrediting pharmacy education programs.

Child Early Reading Development and Education Program (CERDEP)
The Greenwood School District 50 will offer full-day 4-year-old kindergarten this year under the South Carolina Child Early Reading Development and Education Program (CERDEP). The South Carolina legislature created the Child Development Education Pilot program in 2006 to provide full day 4K for high poverty districts in South Carolina.

Academic Honor Students Recognized for 2014 Spring Semester

Piedmont Technical College students who had outstanding academic accomplishments during the 2014 spring semester have earned inclusion on the President’s List. To be named to the list, students must be full time and earn a term GPA of 4.00. Students will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the college president.

Ryan Floyd wins a second young faculty award at Lander

Dr. Ryan Floyd, an assistant professor of history at Lander University, has added a second prestigious faculty award to his academic credentials. Floyd received the 2014 Young Faculty Scholar Award, which follows by two years his selection for the university’s Young Faculty Teaching Award.

PC School of Pharmacy Professor Receives Bowl of Hygeia Award
Clinton, S.C. –Presbyterian College announced today that Dr. Gene Reeder of the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy (PCSP) has received the Bowl of Hygeia Award by the 138th annual South Carolina Pharmacy Association (SCPhA). 

Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes one pharmacist each year from participating states for his or her record of outstanding civic leadership and his or her work to encourage fellow pharmacists to take active roles in their communities. Dr. Reeder is the 2014 South Carolina recipient.

Lander students earn academic honors

Lander University announces its President’s List, Dean’s List and Freshman Honors for spring semester 2014. Undergraduates who have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 out of a possible 4.0 are on the President’s List. Those with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.9 are on the Dean’s List, while freshmen with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 earn Freshman Honors.
