Advanced Manufacturing Brings Big Changes, Big Opportunities

In a few short years, economic developers have seen advanced manufacturing go from a niche within traditional manufacturing to the standard for just about anything that gets made in America today.

“You don’t talk about manufacturing as something you want to recruit without talking about advanced manufacturing,” said Heather Simmons Jones, chief executive with the Greenwood Partnership Alliance.

Like many Piedmont Technical College students, Brendan Golding did not go to college directly after high school.

“I waited a little bit of time before I figured out exactly what I wanted to do,” he said. “I didn’t want to spend the money and not like it.”

NSPS students donate to local food bank

During the month of November, Ninety Six Primary students learned about showing generosity. The students brought in over 1,200 non-perishable food items to donate to the local food bank. Way to go guys!

Freshmen wrap-up first semester with Link 101 - New course helping retain more first-year students

On the morning of Aug. 21, 2017, Lander University freshman Cynthia Graham sat in Finis Horne arena composing a lightning-fast email to math professor Gina Dunn.

It didn’t matter that Dunn was standing just a few feet in front of her, delivering a convocation speech – Graham was trying to outrace every other freshman to be the first one to send her message.

She was hoping to win an on-the-spot contest to guess Dunn’s age – something Dunn had challenged all attending freshmen to do by piecing together several clues in her speech.

Memorial service to honor the life and legacy of Lander President Emeritus Larry A. Jackson

Lander University will hold a memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 9, to celebrate the life and legacy of Lander President Emeritus Larry A. Jackson. Jackson died on Nov. 7 at the age of 92.

The community is invited to attend the memorial service, which begins at 2 p.m. in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Jackson's family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Larry A. Jackson Library.

Two D50 students win Innovation Challenge

In October, IT-oLogy and the South Carolina Department of Education announced the recipients of the first annual Innovation Challenge.

The Innovation Challenge is a new statewide competition for students in grades 3-12 whose purpose is to create projects using technology to solve, or bring awareness to a problem in the community.

Dr. Ray Brooks, president of PTC, welcomed those in attendance. The event was to honor Cornerstone Society members and benefactors who had contributed to the growth and success of the college. This year’s event was a special tribute to the members who had passed in the past year - Calhoun and Ella Claire Mays and Dr. Lex Walters.

Piedmont Technical College will once again celebrate its One Book, One College series in November with this year’s spotlight novel, “The Age of Lincoln”by Dr. Orville Burton.

As a part of the college’s 10th annual One Book, One College series, the library will host the author Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. in the PTC library.

One-Stop-Shop for Students Wanting to Transfer to Lander

Students interested in transferring to Lander University will be able to complete all aspects of the process during Transfer Week, which will be held on the Lander campus Nov. 27-Dec. 1.

“Transfer week is a one stop shop where students can complete the entire admissions process from application to enrollment. Students can also complete financial aid applications, have transcripts reviewed, apply for housing, and go on a campus tour,” said Sydney Crawford, associate director for the Lander Office of Admissions.

Piedmont Technical College will be offering Instant Admission Day for spring 2018.

Instant Admission Day will be Wednesday, Nov. 29 for spring classes which begin on Jan. 10. Admissions counselors will be on hand to help students through the entire enrollment process in just one day.

The Lander athletic department held its first student-athlete fall etiquette dinner for 60 Bearcats on Tuesday night. The event, which featured etiquette specialist Shannon Wilson, was put together for the 60 Bearcat juniors and seniors participating in spring sports.

EHS student wins BBB of the Upstate 2017 Student of Integrity Award

Better Business Bureau® of the Upstate (BBB) presented six high school students with scholarships through the Better Business Bureau Education Foundation during a ceremony on November 9, 2017 at the Hilton Greenville. South Carolina. Secretary of State Mark Hammond presented the scholarships, which may be used to attend the college or university of the student’s choosing.

Freshman student Arie O'Dell is crowned Miss Lander University 2017-2018

Beauty, flair and poise were abundant at the annual "Miss Lander University" pageant, held November 6 in Lander's Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. Reflecting their talents and unique personalities, 12 young women took to the stage to compete for the crown during this year's pageant which incorporated elements of the Great Coral Reef. Contestants were judged on talent performance, professional wear and interviews.

Tommy Claus - Lander tradition brings joy and hope to more families each year

The boxes are out – with hopes that lots of St. Nicholas toys soon will be there.

During the next several weeks, Lander University students will take time from their academic studies to take part in the 14th annual “Tommy Claus,” a university-wide Christmas toy drive to benefit underprivileged families and children in nearby communities.

Sgt. Doug Wannamacher believes that he and the other officers in his unit have the best jobs in the sheriff’s office.

Ninety Six High School's Annual Veterans Day Program

Ninety Six High School and Edgewood Middle School packed the high gymnasium on Thursday, Nov. 9 for their annual Veterans Day Program.  The Emerald High School Air Force Junior ROTC under new direction of Major David Pfancook began the program with the traditional flag ceremony.

Students, faculty and staff at Piedmont Technical College recently gathered to honor veterans. Students and staff who had served or are currently serving in the armed forces were treated to a special luncheon and recognition, including the presentation of special honor cords to those veteran students who will be graduating in December.

EMACH and GEMS Members Participate in Annual Youth Leadership Conference at the Statehouse

Emerald and Greenwood High School were well represented at the Annual Youth Leadership Conference on October 31st at the South Carolina Statehouse Complex in Columbia. The event was hosted by members of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus (SCLBC). Emerald student Jalen Posey and GHS students Jitwan Floyd and Jayden Calhoun served as the representatives from District 50.

Huge crowd expected for Lander commencement - early arrival is suggested

More than 200 graduates are expected to cross the stage and receive their degrees on Dec. 16, 2017, during Lander University’s 156th commencement.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena – and all guests entering the arena will be required to have a ticket.

This year each graduate will be allotted 11 tickets for family and friends – which means that a crowd of more than 2,000 is expected.
