NS Student brings toy gun onto school bus

School District 52 issued out a recorded phone message today informing parents of an incident that occurred Wednesday on a school bus.  The message said a younger student brought a toy gun onto a school bus.  When the driver was made aware, he took possession of the toy gun. 

At no time was any students in danger.  No message was distributed on Wednesday due to the low threat but after several phone calls, the district issued a district wide phone message informing parents of the situation.

Piedmont Tech Students Awarded Greenwood Rotary Club Scholarship

Two Piedmont Technical College students received the Greenwood Rotary Club Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

Pictured, from left: Heaven Lee, a mechanical engineering technology student from Greenwood; Dr. Jack Bagwell, PTC vice president for academic affairs; and De’Varius Harrison, a mechatronics technology student from Hodges.

The scholarship, based on academic achievement and financial need, is awarded annually to a second-year industrial technology student and a second-year engineering technology student.

Lander University conferred bachelor and master degrees upon over 300 students during the university’s 157th commencement ceremony on May 12. Gina Dunn, associate professor of mathematics and Lander’s 2017 distinguished professor, delivered the keynote address during the formal program held inside Finis Horne Arena.

PTC Student Awarded the Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Board Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College mechatronics technology student and Greenwood resident Thomas Jones received the Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Advisory Board Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon.

Congratulating Jones are donor representatives Houston Matthews, left, and Sandra Johnson, right. Awarded annually to second-year students from Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick or Saluda County, the scholarship is based on academic achievement and financial need.

Lander makes 2018 10 Best RN Programs in South Carolina

Registered Nursing just released their 2018 Best RN Programs in South Carolina and Lander lands at #9!  According to www.RegisterdNursing.org, a great way to measure programs is through the NCLEX-RN “pass rates” which they analyzed a total of 28 RN programs in the state.  Programs reviewed included schools that offered an Associate in Nursing (AND/ASN), BSN or Direct-Entry MSN Degree.

New Assistant Principal Named at Northside Middle School

Northside Middle School will add a new face to their administrative team for the 2018- 2019 school year. Sally Moore has been named as Assistant Principal at Northside.

Moore has served as a Math teacher at Greenwood High School for the last 13 years. She has worked as Greenwood High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Coordinator since 20011. Moore graduated from Anderson College in 2005 and went on to earn a Master’s of Education degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom from Walden University.

Clemson University's new FACE to help sustain natural resources

CLEMSON — With an economic impact of $33.4 billion, natural resources are major contributors to South Carolina economy and quality of life. To train people to help sustain these resources, Clemson University is establishing a Fisheries and Aquatic Center of Excellence.

The center, also known as FACE, will be located in the forestry and environmental conservation department. Troy Farmer and Brandon Peoples, assistant professors of fisheries ecology, are leading the center’s establishment.

Pinecrest Administration Discover 3rd Grader with Two Airsoft Pellet Guns

This afternoon, it was reported to Pinecrest administration that a 3rd grade student was playing with a suspicious object. While investigating, school administration discovered two airsoft pellet guns in the 3rd grade student’s book-bag.

GREENWOOD — Lander University recently recognized numerous students for their co-curricular service during the 2017-2018 school year at the university’s annual Student Life Awards ceremony, held at the Finis Horne Arena.

“Participation in student organizations, campus activities, Greek life, leadership programs, recreational and community service programs are just a few examples of how our students are gaining important skills that add to their employability after they graduate,” Lander Vice President for Student Affairs Randy Bouknight said.

GLENAS's Girls help homeless through RealLife Ministries
Ms. Pendergrass girls group, the GLENAS’s Girls, from Brewer Middle School collected items and put together over 80 bags for the homeless.  These bags were distributed by REALife Ministries, Outreach Minister Rodger Smith and other church members to people they would see throughout the community in need.  

These bags included items such as: bottle water, crackers, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, Chap Stick, tooth brush and tooth paste and other items that they may need.  This group of girls and their leader Ms. Pendergrass continue to find ways to serve the needs of our community.

After the house has grown quiet and her family is asleep, Kayce Porterfield pores over numbers and balance sheets in preparation for classes at Piedmont Technical College. She’ll be up at dawn with her husband and two young daughters to start another long day juggling parenting, housework, child care and studying all over again with the same solitary, lamp-lit conclusion.

Piedmont Technical College Graduation Set for May 3

Piedmont Technical College will hold two spring commencement exercises on Thursday, May 3. An afternoon ceremony for Arts & Science, Health Science and Nursing graduates will take place at 3 p.m. An evening ceremony for Agriculture, Business, Computer Technology, Engineering/Industrial Technology and Public Service will be held at 7 p.m. Both commencements will take place in the James Medford Family Event Center on PTC’s Lex Walters Campus in Greenwood.
