Renovated pool facility dedicated in honor of Winnie Phillips

Erskine’s renovated pool facility was dedicated in honor of Winnie Morrison Phillips, Erskine alumna and former alumni director, in an outdoor ceremony Saturday, June 10. Phillips, who graduated in 1941, and a number of her family members and friends were present for the occasion.

Vice President for Alumni and Advancement Buddy Ferguson said Phillips was delighted.

Lander University Offers 'Cybercamp'

Brayden Peters, a rising fifth-grader at Woodfields Elementary, checks the strength of a password using the “How Secure Is My Password?” website and learns it would take a computer four octodecillion years to crack it. Steganography and encryption were among the other topics covered in Cybercamp, one of the Duke Energy-sponsored science and math programs for young learners offered this summer by Lander University. Working with Brayden is Lander Assistant Professor of Computing Dr. Julie Henderson.

Wiley, a medical assisting student, is congratulated by Courtenay Ramey, donor and presenter. The scholarship is awarded annually to a health science program student and is based on financial need and academic achievement.

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Wilson Weaghington was recently awarded the Judy Daulton Accounting Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Weaghington, left, an accounting student, is congratulated by Judy Daulton. This endowment was established in 2014 by Judy Daulton, a retired accounting instructor at Piedmont Technical. Scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in the Accounting curriculum.

Two Piedmont Technical College students received the Greenwood Rotary Club Scholarship at a recent scholarship luncheon. PTC Student Awarded the Casandra Cae Laster Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Greenwood resident Christine Evans, center, recently received the Casandra Cae Laster Memorial Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Evans, a commercial art student, is congratulated by Kendall Adams, commercial art program director and Laster family members Donna Laster and Jesse Stevens. The scholarship was established in Laster’s memory for students enrolled in the commercial arts program and is based on academic achievement.

SC Connections Academy celebrates talented graduates

South Carolina Connections Academy, a tuition-free online public school that serves students statewide in grades K-12 across South Carolina, graduated 420 seniors on today at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, S.C. Family, friends, teachers and administrators came together to celebrate the students’ accomplishments as Judi Gatson, WIS News anchor, delivered the commencement speech.

Lander women's soccer announces 2017 schedule

The Lander women's soccer schedule announced its 2017 schedule on Wednesday, a slate that features eight home matches, five during the month of September. 

Under the leadership of head coach Chris Ayer, the Bearcats are set to play 16 regular-season matches, including 10 contests against Peach Belt Conference opponents.

Piedmont Tech Adds Two New Certificate Programs for Aspiring IT Pros

It seems every day there is a new report of computer hacking or system problems at a major company or organization. Piedmont Technical College is doing its part to prepare local workers to navigate an increasingly complex world of information technology challenges.

PTC is introducing two new certificate programs for the fall semester. The Certified IT Professional certificate prepares students to take national certification exams offered by Microsoft, CompTIA and others. The Cybersecurity certificate prepares students to protect IT systems from attack.

In May, Kenneth McDaniel prepared to walk across the graduation stage at Piedmont Technical College to complete a journey that he was not always sure was possible when he decided to get his degree.

“I won’t lie, I was scared to death that I would not be able to do this,” he said of his decision.

Author visits GHS

Jessica Khoury, author of Origin, Vitro, Kalahari, and The Forbidden Wish, visited Greenwood High School on Thursday, May 18.  Ms. Khoury shared information about her writing process and how books are published.  Her presentation included several activities involving student participation with opportunities for students to ask questions and purchase books.

Tau Alpha Pi Inducts New Members

Eight new members were recently inducted into the Tau Alpha Pi National Honor Society at Piedmont Technical College. Tau Alpha Pi is the national honor society for engineering technology, just as Phi Beta Kappa is for liberal arts and Tau Beta Pi is for engineering. Founded in 1953 and managed for more than 30 years by engineering technology educator Frederick J. Berger, Tau Alpha Pi is open to both associate-degree and baccalaureate candidates.
