Louden receives scholarship from Greenwood County Education Association

Congratulations to Ninety Six Senior Alexis Louden for receiving the 2015-2016 Scholarship from the Greenwood County Education Association.  Louden will be attending Clemson University in the fall.

Sixth Lander Film Festival Called 'Extraordinary'

The sixth annual Lander Film Festival was “extraordinary,” according to Festival Director Paul Crutcher, who called it “the best one we’ve ever had.”

Crutcher said the quality of the films turned in by participants has improved every year. “The game just keeps getting raised, and I love that,” he said.

Lander Equestrian Program Presents Demonstration Day

Lander University’s Equestrian Center will host Bearcat Therapeutic Riding Demonstration Day on Saturday, April 18, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Lander equestrian’s covered arena on the campus of the Burton Center, located at 2611 Hwy. 72/221 E.

Lander Jazz Ensemble's Spring Concert This Thursday

Lander University’s 26-member Jazz Ensemble will present its Spring Concert this Thursday, April 16, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium. The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 8 p.m. and will feature the Lander University Dancers and guest vocalist Glynis Martin.

Genesis Education Center Community Garden needs your vote

The Genesis Education Center Community Garden located in Greenwood, SC, has entered the Seeds of Change® Grant Program for an opportunity to win one of two $20,000, five $10,000 grants or ten $1,000 grants and is asking the community to get out and vote for their application. The Grant Program aims to enhance the environmental, economic and social well-being of gardens, farms and communities. The grants will be awarded to organizations that help support sustainable, community-based gardening and farming programs that focus on teaching people about the food they eat and how it’s grown.

Science and Mathematics Governor's School to Bring iTEAMS Xtreme to Greenwood County

Columbia, SC - The Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is partnering with Greenwood County School District 50 to deliver iTEAMS Xtreme summer camp to rising 7th and 8th graders in Greenwood County. The day camp will be held June 15-18 at Greenwood High School. The online application is currently available at www.scgssm.org/iteams.

Lander students earn academic honors

Lander University announces its President’s List, Dean’s List and Freshman Honors for fall semester 2014. Undergraduates who have earned a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 out of a possible 4.0 are on the President’s List. Those with a GPA of 3.5 to 3.9 are on the Dean’s List, while freshmen with a GPA between 3.0 and 3.49 earn Freshman Honors.

Five students in Lander University’s Department of Mass Communication and Theatre have been selected to direct one-act plays as a means of demonstrating what they have learned in class. The six productions are scheduled for Sunday through Tuesday, April 5-7.

Lander students chosen to spend a semester working and studying in Washington, D.C

Lander University’s perfect record for placing students in the Washington Internship Program remains intact.

Seniors Kim Modica, of Waterloo, and Megan Hughes, of Anderson, will spend the fall 2015 semester working, studying and living in the nation’s capital. Since 2010, all 13 Lander students who applied have been accepted into the program, which is sponsored by the University of South Carolina Honors College.

First Annual Alumni Week Debuts at Lander

Lander University’s First Annual Alumni Week begins at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 13, with an alumni happy hour, followed by a corn hole competition, at Greenwood’s Sports Break.

Events continue at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, when alumni who graduated between 2000 and 2014 will gather at the Mill House restaurant for a young alumni social.

NSHS Indoor Percussion Ensemble wins SCBDA State Championship

The Ninety Six High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble attended and won their first SCBDA Winter Ensemble State Championship on Sunday, March 22, 2015.  The drumline competed at York High School and received a score of 91.6, the top score out of 14 participating drumlines. The drumline has had an excellent inaugural season, winning first place at 4 of the 5 contest they have attended.

The ensemble will compete in the C.W.E.A. Finals this coming Saturday at Winthrop University, performing at 4:40 pm.

STEMS Continues Tradition of Excellence at the 2015 Invention Convention

Westview Middle School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics School (STEMS) have become regular winners at the annual Invention Conventions held in Greenville. This year proved to be another successful year for STEMS students. For the fifth consecutive year, Westview’s students and staff returned home with several awards.

Aspiring Filmmakers Apply Now

The deadline to enter Lander University’s Short Film Competition is March 20. Part of the Sixth Annual Lander Film Festival, the event will feature lines written by writers from Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. specifically for the competition.

PTC Student Finds Her Own Path

Malaurie Hullings has never been the type to follow the crowd. She loved physics and math, two subjects that many of her friends avoided. It proved to be the key to her future.

“My aunt, who is a life coach, asked me what my future plans were,” said Hullings. “I was good at problem solving and curious about how things worked and she pointed me toward engineering.”

BOJANGLES' honors six District Teachers of the Year, donates hundreds of books to local schools

On March 12, Bojangles’ on Highway 72 Bypass NW in Greenwood honored local District Teachers of the Year by presenting books donated to their school libraries and dedicated in their names. This event is one of 10 happening across South Carolina this spring as Bojangles’ continues its support of public education in the sixth year of its partnership with South Carolina Future Minds.

Piedmont Technical College Hosts Adventure to Antarctica

Piedmont Technical College is hosting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the last great wilderness that is Antarctica.  The Tour of Antarctica is scheduled for Jan. 13-30, 2016. 

There will be a free information session about the trip on Thursday, March 19 from 6-7:30 p.m. in room 219-C of the James C. Self Conference Center on the PTC Greenwood Campus. A representative from Collette Vacations will be there to show slides of the trip and answer any questions. There is no obligation to take part in the trip by attending this free session, but participants who register at the session or before June 14 will receive a $200 discount.

NS performs well at State 4-H Competition

The Ninety Six 4-H Horse Club represented Ninety Six well by taking high honors in the State 4-H Hippology and Horse Bowl Contests at Clemson University on February 21-22, 2015. These 4-Hers have spent many hours meeting together since September to study all aspects of horse care and ownership. Any and all topics are fair game at this level, including tack, bits, shoes, farrier tools, equine genetics, reproduction, anatomy, physiology, parasites, diseases, hays, feeds, grasses, and all breeds and disciplines.

NSHS Indoor Drumline takes second in regional competition

Ninety Six High School Indoor Drumline travelled to Dorman High School this past weekend to participate in WGI’s Southeastern Regional.  The drumline, under the direction of Torey Riser, performed their program “V for Vendetta” alongside some of the best drumlins in the world.  There were even a couple of former world champions there.
