EMACH and GEMS Members Participate in Annual Youth Leadership Conference at the Statehouse

Emerald and Greenwood High School were well represented at the Annual Youth Leadership Conference on October 31st at the South Carolina Statehouse Complex in Columbia. The event was hosted by members of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus (SCLBC). Emerald student Deondre Griffin and GHS students Nathan Bonaparte and Javarion Calhoun served as the representatives from District 50.

Ninety Six High School & Edgewood Middle School celebrate Veterans Day.
On November 9, the Ninety Six High School Complex celebrated veterans who deserve so much more than we could ever give them. The NS High winning band played the National Anthem and the NS Chorus sang a beautiful rendition America : The Spirit Lives On.

GHS Pageant set for Nov 27, tickets available now
The Miss Greenwood High School Pageant will be held in the auditorium at GHS on Tuesday, November 27, at 6:30 pm.  Doors open at 6:00 pm.  Tickets are $12 each, and may be purchased prior to the pageant in the front office at the school, or at the door the evening of the event.

Pro Racer Mario Andretti famously said, “If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough!” Prospective students who are pondering enrollment at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) should never become complacent about their future. During this event at the Lex Walters Campus-Greenwood Enrollment Center, individuals can get accepted on the spot and fast-track their way into college, moving closer to their career goals.

Hannah Courtney Wilson had never been in a pageant before, but that didn’t stop her from being named Miss Lander University 2018-2019, following this year’s pageant, held Monday, Nov. 12, in the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center Auditorium.

'Finally, We'll Be Turning the Dirt' Piedmont Tech to Break Ground on O'Dell Center

In 2016, Piedmont Technical College (PTC) announced plans to build the William H. “Billy” O’Dell Upstate Center for Manufacturing Excellence, so named in honor of the late, long-serving state senator from the Lakelands. What followed were months of fundraising, voter passage of a penny sales tax and the receipt of a sizable federal grant. It’s been a long journey, but at long last, PTC will break ground on the O’Dell Center on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Medford Center on South Emerald Road on the college’s Greenwood campus.

Lander to host lecture on groundbreaking S.C. court case as part of its civic engagement initiative

The community will have the opportunity to learn more about the South Carolina case which later inspired Brown v. Board of Education.

Dr. Kimberly Richburg, associate professor of political science at Lander, will hold a public lecture on Briggs v. Elliott, and the part it played in ending racial segregation in public schools in the United States. The lecture will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 3:30 p.m. in Lander University’s Carnell Learning Center, room 300.

Scholarships Have 'A Massive Impact,' Lander Banquet Speaker Says

“Had there not been a scholarship here, I would not have been able to come to America,” sponsor and keynote speaker Rob Strickland said at this year’s Eleanor Shiflet Teal Scholarship Banquet.

    The banquet, an annual event at Lander University, represents an opportunity for scholarship donors and recipients to meet each other.

    Strickland, a native of Hull, England, came to Lander on a soccer scholarship. He was named to the Peach Belt All-Conference team in 1999 and 2000, and to the Peach Belt All-Tournament team in 1999. He is now the senior regional consultant vice president at First Citizens Bank Wealth Management in Columbia.

GHS Army JROTC presents colors at NBA game

Greenwood High School Army JROTC Color Guard presented the colors at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte NC for the NBA game between the Charlotte Hornets and the Chicago Bulls Friday, October 26. “This was a tremendous honor and confidence builder for these students to be able to present the colors before an audience of more than 15,000 fans,” GHS JROTC instructor CSM (Ret) Jeffrey Brown said. “It could be a once in a lifetime experience to step onto an NBA floor reserved for professional basketball players.”

NS Students attend Annual Legislative Black Caucus in Columbia
Students from Ninety Six High School attended the 12th Annual Legislative Black Caucus Day on October 31 in Columbia. Speaker, Anton Gunn, spoke to students about service, having a good attitude and being positive. The students also learned how a bill becomes a law and debated their teammates on reasons why a bill needed to become a law or not. Amending laws was also discussed.

Miss Emerald Pageant set for Nov 5
The Miss Emerald Pageant will be held November 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the Emerald High School gymnatorium. Emcees for the night include EHS band director, Stephan Botchie, Miss Emerald 2017 Hayley Madden, and Anna Mills Cox, president and business owner of Amplified Communications, and Miss Emerald 2010. Cox will also perform several songs during the entertainment portion of the event. Tickets are $10.oo in advance and $12.00 at the door.

EHS Aerospace Engineering Program Recognized at October Board Meeting

During the October Board meeting, the EHS Aerospace Engineering program was recognized as the #1 program in the nation! This past summer, District 50 was notified by Southern Regional Education Board’s Advanced Career Program that Emerald High School’s Aerospace Engineering class was one of the best in the country!

On October 19, students, faculty, and staff participated in a Pink-Out Parade in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Students sold cookies, t-shirts, and made donations to support this Great Cause, so far we are proud to announce that Ninety Six High School has raised $255.38.

Worley Joins Lander University as Chief Fundraiser

Following an extensive national search, Lander University announced today that Mike Worley has been appointed vice president for University Advancement and executive director of The Lander Foundation.  He will begin his responsibilities with Lander on Nov. 19.

“Mike is a recognized leader in philanthropy in the higher education arena,” said Lander President Richard Cosentino. “He is highly skilled in designing new collaborative initiatives, creating successful strategies, and working with alumni, donors and volunteers to meet institutional goals. We are extremely fortunate to have him at the helm of our Advancement team.” 

With more than 20 years of results-oriented experience in philanthropy, Worley joins Lander after serving as Senior Associate Vice President for Constituent Relations at Georgia State University, where he led a team of 30 fundraisers and spearheaded the university’s $300 million capital campaign.

Mentoring for Success a Champion of Public Education

On Monday, October 15th at the Board of Trustees meeting, South Carolina School Board Association (SCSBA) President Wesley Hightower presented Greenwood School District 50’s Mentoring for Success Program with a Champions for Public Education award. The Champions of Public Education award is presented by SCSBA to community residents, organizations or local businesses/industries whose support of and contributions to public education have significantly benefited the entire school district or public schools statewide.

Sixty District 50 students recognized for ACCESS 2018 success

Sixty Greenwood School District 50 students were recognized for meeting the Exit Criteria for English Proficiency on ACCESS 2018 and speaking an additional language at the October 15th Board of Trustees meeting. This means that these students are fluent in their native language and the English language.

Lander University Vice President Greg Lovins Announces Retirement

Lander University announced today the retirement of Greg Lovins as vice president for Business and Administration. His last day at Lander will be Wednesday, Oct. 31.

“My wife, Claudine, and I are empty nesters, and we want to be empty nesters together,” Lovins said about his personal decision to retire.

The announcement marks Lovins’ second retirement, as he joined the Lander administration in March 2016 after retiring from Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, N.C., where he served as vice chancellor for Business Affairs. His wife and two daughters, who are ASU students, live in Boone.

GATAS students receive lessons from local neurosurgeon
The GATAS students at Hodges Elementary School/GSI in Mrs. Hamlett's class have been learning about our amazing brain. 

On Wednesday, October 17th the students had a local neurosurgeon to come as a guest speaker to share his knowledge about the brain. Dr. Greg McLoughlin is a neurosurgeon who works in Greenwood. He shared with the GATAS students facts and information about the brain. 

Students learned about the parts of the brain, the lobes, neurons, and famous individuals associated with our understanding of how our brain works. After his presentation, students were allowed to ask all of their "wondering" questions about the brain.

Lander announces "Education Game" against rival Erskine

The Lander women's basketball program and the Lander Diversity Advisory Council are excited to announce a partnership with Greenwood School District 50 to host an "Education Game" on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 11:00 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena against rival Erskine. The game time has been adjusted to accommodate the over 600 Greenwood School District 50 8th graders that will be on the campus of Lander University. Students will enjoy a tour of the campus and exclusive reserved seating for the basketball game at 11:00 a.m. sponsored by Chick-fil-a of Greenwood. District 50 8th grade students, teachers, and chaperones will receive a complimentary game voucher to be redeemed at any upcoming basketball game day.
