A unique opportunity to help launch the Southeast Film Showcase

Filmmakers from across the South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida are invited to help launch the Southeast Film Showcase, the newest addition the annual Lander University Film Festival.

Filmmakers may submit short narrative films (15 minutes or less) made within the past ten years for entry in the showcase competition and screening. There is no thematic limitation but films must be PG-13.

Cambridge students take 1st place in State Sporting Clays competition

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy Sporting Clays team. The students recently competed in the State Sporting Clays competition held at the Palmetto Shooting complex in Edgefield SC. 

The Middle School Girls finished 1st in the MS "New school" division and 2nd overall MS girls division.  The boys finished 1st place in the MS "New School" division.  The team has enjoyed a successful inaugural season.

Members of the Martha B. Williams family recently made a contribution to the scholarship awarded annually in her name to a deserving student. As a result of their generosity and cumulative contributions in support of the college, the Martha B. Williams Scholarship has moved to Patron status on the Foundation’s Wall of Honor.

Lander University announces the appointment of Brian Hamm to the position of assistant vice president for Enrollment and Student Success. His duties at Lander include spearheading the university’s initiatives for student retention – the percentage of students who persist in their efforts to earn a degree.

STEMS Continues Tradition of Excellence at the 2017 Invention Convention

Westview Middle School’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics School (STEMS) have become regular winners at the annual Invention Conventions held in Greenville. This year proved to be another successful year for STEMS students. For the sixth consecutive year, Westview’s students and staff returned home with several awards.

Open House to be Held at Piedmont Tech

Piedmont Technical College will sponsor an Open House Tuesday, March 21 in the James Medford Family Event Center on the Lex Walters Campus. Representatives from the more than 80 programs offered at PTC will be available to answer questions. There will be two sessions: a morning session from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and an evening session from 4-6 p.m.

Governor's School for Science & Math Students Win State Chess Tournament

Hartsville, SC – Five students from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) won the team championship at the South Carolina Chess Association’s State Scholastic Chess Tournament in Mt. Pleasant on February 25, 2017. The team’s winning score of 14.5 surpassed defending champion D. W. Daniel High School, who finished second with 11.0.

4-H Members Compete at State Horse Bowl
Thirteen members of the Ninety Six 4-H Horse Club had a successful run at the SC State 4-H Horse Bowl on Saturday, February 18th. Horse Bowl is a fast-paced, competitive, quiz challenge requiring thinking speed and a broad knowledge of all things horse. Participants must hit the buzzer and answer correctly before their counterparts on the other team, or lose points in double-elimination brackets over the day-long contest.

Representatives from AnMed Health recently provided a special lunch for the students in the Piedmont Technical College medical assistant and surgical technology programs. Stephanie Alessandrini, left and Carlisle Baker shared the needs of the Anderson-based health care system for well-trained personnel in both fields.

Hippology Competition Winners from Local 4-H Club
The Ninety Six 4-H Horse Club was well-represented in the SC State 4-H Hippology Contest at Clemson University on February 19th. The club sent twelve members to compete, ranging in age from 7 to 17, Cloverbud to Senior. 

They have been preparing since September, studying all aspects of horse ownership, including tack/bits/shoes/farrier tools, equine genetics/reproduction, anatomy/physiology, parasites/diseases, hays/feeds/grasses, and all gaits/disciplines. The Hippology Contest consists of a written exam phase, both impromptu and prepared team problem presentations, a judging phase and a laboratory practical ‘stations’ phase.

Caleb Boatwright looks like your typical teenager. He’s a soft-spoken guy who has the typical friends that he hangs out with each day. He will graduate in the spring from Greenwood High School. He doesn’t seem to be extraordinary.

District 50 Announces the Retirement of ECC Director Jean Powell

Greenwood School District 50 has announced the retirement of Jean Powell, Director of the Early Childhood Center. Powell has served as the Director of the Early Childhood Center since 2007. During her 30 years of service in District 50 and Greenwood School District 51, Powell has served as a teacher, assistant principal, evaluator, and director. Powell also worked eight years as a Counselor & Evaluator Assistance at the Greenwood Vocational Rehabilitation Center.

Lander Professor speaks at NSHS during Black History Month

Dr. Holisa C. Wharton, Professor and Dean of Lander University School of nursing spoke at Ninety Six High School for a Black History Program on Monday, Feb 27.  Dr. Wharton addressed students in a packed gymnasium with her colorful demonstration of the dwindling student population and low graduation rates across the nation of all males, but especially the black male population.

Lander Stages Student Artwork Ceremony

A special ceremony was held Thursday, Feb. 16, at Lander University’s Moran Assembly Plaza to recognize the creators of three sculptures recently added to campus.

Two of the sculptures — “Mental Expansion,” by Olivia Bolt, of Gray Court, and “Sounds of Laughter,” by Molly Ott, of Boiling Springs — have been installed in the plaza itself. A third, “Echo,” by Elizabeth Earles, of Columbia, was installed in the Larry A. Jackson Library, which adjoins the plaza.

Students, faculty and staff at Piedmont Technical College gathered for a campus-wide Unity Feast Wednesday. The event kicked off a series of Black History Month events at the college. Steve Coleman, director of Genesis Initiatives, center, served as emcee for a trivia contest on significant moments in black history.
