Graduations Reminders for Greenwood School D50

The Mid-Year Graduation Ceremony for Greenwood School District 50 will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019, in the Emerald High School Gymnasium.  The graduation ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m.

Guests attending the ceremony are required to have a ticket to attend.  Each graduate will receive tickets for their guests.

GHS Administration Receives Report of Bomb Threat Written on Boys Bathroom Wall

This afternoon, GHS school administration received a report regarding a bomb threat written on a boys bathroom wall. School administration immediately contacted law enforcement and district officials and the school was placed on HOLD. After investigating the situation, law enforcement deemed the situation a low level threat.

As a precaution, law enforcement and school administration worked together to complete a thorough search of the building. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

“We appreciate the swift response of law enforcement and school administration in handling this situation,” Community Services Coordinator Johnathan L. Graves stated. “We take these matters very seriously. We are committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students and staff.”

Presidential Ambassador from Saluda Eyes Career in Nursing

Aime Lorick had an epiphany in 11th grade that led to her pursuit of a nursing degree at Piedmont Technical College (PTC), where she also serves as a Presidential Ambassador representing the college. She realized the inherent value of newborns from day one.

Lander Names Greg Allen Police Chief

Since becoming a Lander University police officer in 2007, Greg Allen has held about every position possible within the police department, serving as an investigative sergeant, investigative lieutenant, support service captain and uniform patrol service captain.

Now he can add another title to the list — chief of police.

“I really don’t know the words for it,” he said about being picked to succeed Eddie Briggs, who retired this summer. “It’s a blessing,” he said.

Piedmont Tech Ready to Help Displaced Virginia College Students

Like many in the higher education community, officials at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) heard the news about Virginia College closing and expressed concern for the students who were impacted. Students affected by the closures are invited to inquire about opportunities to continue their education at Piedmont Technical College. Spring Classes begin at PTC on January 9, and registration is open now.

GHS Chorus Performs at Disney World's Candlelight Processional Ceremony

On November 29th, the Greenwood High School Chorus embarked upon a magical journey to a special place in Florida.The GHS Chorus auditioned and was accepted to sing for the Candlelight Processional Ceremony at Disney World.  The annual ceremony was held at EPCOT as tourists were treated to the story of Christmas told by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra and massed choir.

Dr. Scott Jones Announced as Lander University Provost, VPAA
Lander University has announced the appointment of Dr. Scott L. Jones as the university’s next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Jones, who comes to Lander from Indiana University Kokomo, will begin his duties at Lander on January 7. “In addition to being a well-respected academician, Dr. Scott Jones has been a key driver in the development of new academic programs and strategies, including online and graduate programs, which are two areas of priority at Lander,” said Lander University President Richard Cosentino. “His accomplishments in higher education are impressive, and I am excited to see how Dr. Jones will apply his expertise and experience to successfully lead our academic team at Lander University.”

GHS Junior Rose Whitt Recognized as a 2018 Congressional App Challenge Winner

On Wednesday, December 5th, hundreds of U.S. Representatives announced the winners of their district’s 2018 Congressional App Challenge. GHS Junior Rose Whitt was announced as the one and only winner from South Carolina for her fitness workout app Move. Rose’s interest in coding and current enrollment in an AP Computer Science course at Emerald led her to begin searching online for possible contests where she could test her skills.

Piedmont Tech Lauds Partnership to Expand Mechatronics Training Opportunities

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Heritage Classic Foundation is partnering with the SC Technical College System to invest $100,000 in a grant to expand training opportunities for skilled mechatronic workers across the state. The grant will be used to support Siemens Mechatronic System Certification Programs for faculty at South Carolina’s 16 technical colleges. This certification will allow for training and preparing much-needed, skilled maintenance technicians for South Carolina’s growing manufacturing sector.

Nosing for the bigtime - Lander graduate hopes to turn love of children's books into fulltime career

Shortly after graduating from Lander University five years ago, Allistar Banks started seeing red – all due to two curious friends named Nosy Nicole and wide-eyed Ashton.

Far from making her angry, however, Nicole and Ashton have led Banks into some snooping adventures involving submarines, boots, balloons, and magical airplanes.

Though Nicole and Ashton are make-believe, Banks considers them two of her best friends – and no matter where she follows them in the near future, Banks hopes they will eventually lead her to becoming a fulltime writer of children’s books.

Piedmont Tech Seminar Prepares HVAC 'Super-Sleuths'

HVAC technicians must be super-sleuths in troubleshooting compressor problems. With so many components, just one malfunctioning part can throw the whole system off. Sherlock Holmes would be proud of the detective work demonstrated when the Piedmont Technical College (PTC) HVAC Department recently hosted a Semi-Hermetic Compressor Tear-Down Seminar at its HVAC lab facility in Greenwood.

The Miss Ninety Six High Pageant was held on Saturday, November 10th at Ninety Six High School.  The evening began with a Disney inspired themed parade of contestants as the 2017/18 Miss Ninety Six High School, Gaalon Lukie, invited everyone to "Be Our Guest."

PTC Horticulture Program to Hold Sale of Poinsettias, a Traditional Christmas Plant with SC Roots

Long before children began writing this year’s enthusiastic holiday letters to Santa, the Horticulture Club students at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) were busy cultivating and growing more than 1,000 poinsettia plants in their campus greenhouse. This Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., students will be selling the colorful results of their labors at the Horticulture Building and Greenhouse on the Greenwood campus.

Lander University Readies for Fall Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 18

More than 220 graduates are expected to receive their degrees on Tuesday, Dec. 18, during Lander University’s 158th Commencement Exercises, beginning at 11 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena.

Keynote Speaker
Dr. Sean Barnette, associate professor of English at Lander and winner of the university’s 2018 Distinguished Professor Award, will serve as keynote speaker. Barnette earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina, and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

Local top student named a Coca-Cola Scholar semifinalist

Sarah McLeod Hobbs, a student of Greenwood High School has been named a Semifinalist for the 2019 class of the Coca-Cola Scholars Program and moving to the next round of the selection process.  If she wins Hobbs would receive a $20,000 college scholarship.

A joint effort of Coca-Cola bottlers across the US and The Coca-Cola Company, the Coca-Cola Scholars Program is one of the largest corporate-sponsored, achievement-based scholarship programs of its kind.  With the addition of the 2019 class, teh Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have programs of its kind. With the addition of the 2019 class, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation will have provided more than 6.150 Coke Scholars nationwide with over $69 million in scholarships over the course of 31 years.

Emerald and Greenwood High School were well represented at the Annual Youth Leadership Conference on October 31st at the South Carolina Statehouse Complex in Columbia. The event was hosted by members of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus (SCLBC). Emerald student Deondre Griffin and GHS students Nathan Bonaparte and Javarion Calhoun served as the representatives from District 50.

On November 9, the Ninety Six High School Complex celebrated veterans who deserve so much more than we could ever give them. The NS High winning band played the National Anthem and the NS Chorus sang a beautiful rendition America : The Spirit Lives On.

'Finally, We'll Be Turning the Dirt' Piedmont Tech to Break Ground on O'Dell Center

In 2016, Piedmont Technical College (PTC) announced plans to build the William H. “Billy” O’Dell Upstate Center for Manufacturing Excellence, so named in honor of the late, long-serving state senator from the Lakelands. What followed were months of fundraising, voter passage of a penny sales tax and the receipt of a sizable federal grant. It’s been a long journey, but at long last, PTC will break ground on the O’Dell Center on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 9:30 a.m. in front of the Medford Center on South Emerald Road on the college’s Greenwood campus.
