Lander Nursing Reunion Deemed a Success

Jackson Lecture Series with terrorism expert Will McCants, set for March 12 at Lander University, has been CANCELLED.

William McCants ’97, an expert on the Middle East, Islam and terrorism, was scheduled to speak at Lander University on March 12 as part of the university’s Jackson Endowed Lecture Series. The highlight of his campus visit was to give a public lecture titled “Political Islam, Terrorism and ISIS: Reflections on American Foreign Policy.” 

Due to circumstances beyond the university's control, the March 12 lecture featuring Dr. William McCants '97, has been cancelled. Please pull this story from your list of upcoming news assignments; and if you have already published this announcement, please issue an update to inform the community that the lecture has been cancelled.

Lander University’s first Eat ’n Play day in 2018 occurred on Feb. 12, the 146th anniversary of the school’s founding.

Homecoming King and Queen Crowned at Lander

Following a weeklong celebration of lively competitions and activities, the student body at Lander University has chosen a new Homecoming King and Queen. The pair were crowned during ceremonies held at halftimes of the Lander men's and women's Homecoming Day basketball games against Columbus State.

Patient Care program helps student be better prepared, more confident

Ultimately, Megan Deason is interested in becoming a nurse. But in the meantime, she sees the Patient Care Technician program at Piedmont Technical College as a way to get to work in a hospital environment more quickly—and to start developing some of the knowledge she’ll need when she decides to go on.

EHS investigates bomb threat

Emerald High School authorities along with local law enforcement investigated a bomb threat today.

The threat was written on a boy’s bathroom wall.  The school administration immediately contacted the law enforcement and placed the school on lockdown. 

After searching the building, it was declared all safe and the school resumed normal operation.

EHS presents 1st Annual "Mr. Viking" contest
This wildly entertaining event, featuring some of the school’s largest personalities, will be held Monday, March 12th, at 6:30 PM in the Emerald High School gym.   

Bring the whole family and support these young men as they compete for the title of “Mr. Viking”. Competition will be fierce, as the winner will be “Superintendent for the Day” for District 50.

Annual Anne B. McKellar Memorial 5K set for May 5

The annual Anne B. McKellar Memorial 5K will take place on May 5, 2018 at Hodges Elementary School. The race will start, rain or shine at 9:00 AM at the school. The proceeds from the race will go to the American Cancer Society.

Anne B. McKellar was a Special Education teacher for 28 years, the last 15 years at Pinecrest Elementary School. She was a tireless worker for her special needs students, as well as her two children Brett and Erica.

NS Primary Kindergarten Students Receive Recognition for the Greenwood Promise Initiative
During Ninety Six Primary's Winter Awards Assembly, our kindergarten class was recognized as the graduating class of 2030. Kris Burris, the director of the Greenwood Promise, recognized each child in this class as part of the Greenwood Promise initiative. 

Each student received a medal and was asked to start thinking about their plans after they graduate high school. This was such an honor for these kids. Thank you to the Greenwood Promise!

Greenwood School District 50 Registration Dates Set

Greenwood School District 50 will begin registration for the 2018-2019 school year on Monday, January 22, 2018 through Friday, January 26, 2018.  New Kindergarten and New First Grade Students Should REGISTER.  Parents and/or guardians should register their new to kindergarten or first grade children at the school that serves their attendance area between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Helping others has its own rewards, but it’s also something that you can make a career out of.

“Jobs in the human services area are expected to grow by a minimum of 12 percent between 2014-24,” said Jamilla Jenkins-Nelson, a human services instructor at Piedmont Technical College. “It’s a rewarding career because you help people cope with life’s challenges.”

Lander University Readying to Celebrate 50 Years of Men's Basketball

The Lander University Office of Alumni Affairs is urging alumni who played men’s basketball at the school to join them in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the sport at Lander. An on-court recognition of former players will be held at halftime of the Saturday, Jan. 20, matchup between Lander and USC Aiken at Horne Arena.

GREENWOOD, S.C. __ Lander University conferred bachelor and master degrees upon 167 students during the university’s 156th commencement ceremony on December 16. Ironman triathlete, attorney, and motivational speaker Jay Hewitt delivered the keynote address during the formal program held inside Finis Horne Arena.

Greenwood School Bus involved in an accident, no injuries

A Greenwood School District 50 bus was involved in an accident Friday around 4 p.m.  According to the district, two other vehicles collided near the intersection of Airport Road and Deadfall Road and ran into the bus.  Students and the driver on the bus were not harmed.  Local law enforcement and school officials were notified and are investigating the accident.

Greenwood School District 50 said they are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all of their students and employees.
