A springtime pageant marks the beginning of a new role for one man on the Lander University campus. Coordinated by the Panhellenic sororities at Lander University, the Mr. Lander Pageant provides entertainment and an opportunity to raise funds for the student organizations.

Judges at this year's pageant selected a sophomore to hold the title of Mr. Lander 2017. Sponsored by Gamma Phi Beta sorority, Santos Pagan Jr., of North Augusta, won the highest overall score during the evening event held in the auditorium of the Josephine B. Abney Cultural Center. "It was a great experience to be a part of," said Pagan. "The guys I competed against were so supportive of each other the entire night, and the group of people who organized this put so much effort into it that it made the process run smoothly."

In addition to Mr. Lander, Pagan's impressive list of leadership credentials at the university includes serving as Presidential Ambassador, Freshman Orientation Leader, President of the Student Alumni Association and Vice President of Lander's Football Club. The mass communications major also works at the student-operated radio station XLR-Radio, competes in intramural sports and is a member of the Lander Catholic Organization.

When not in the classroom, studying or involved in campus activities, Pagan lends a hand to those in the community by volunteering with the Miracle League at the Burton Center and helping with construction of the Habitat for Humanity House on campus. Other winners of the pageant are Shakeem Coleman as 1st-Runner Up, and Logan Lusk for the People's Choice Award.
