A Greenwood man entered a guilty plea in a case involving the death of 3-year-old Jatin A. Posey of Greenwood SC back in July 2016.
Grandy Funches, 30 of Greenwood plead guilty to two charges in which he is ordered to serve a total of 30 years in prison, a sentence handed down by Circuit Court Judge Frank Addy.
First Funches pled guilty to the charge of Homicide by Child Abuse and received a 25 year sentence. He also received 10 years for a 1st degree assault and battery charge which originally was criminal sexual conduct with minor that Funches was arrested for back in 2013 when the mother of the child admitted to having sex with him and his brother. These sentences are to run concurrently.
David Stumbo, 8th Circuit Solicitor said that Assistant Solicitor Joshua Thomas along with Investigator Windy Chappell gave invaluable assistance in preparing for this trial.
In July 2017, Funches called 911 at 11:00pm claiming that a child may be having seizures. Greenwood County EMS had to begin CPR on Posey at the scene and then transported her to Self Regional Healthcare. At 11:25pm the child was pronounced dead.
Based on the autopsy, it was determined that Posey actually died from blunt force trauma. The investigation then lead to the arrest of Funches and charged him with homicide by child abuse.
Prior to the above incident, Funches along with his brother Travis Funches was both arrested in 2014 after they were reported to having sex with a 14-year-old minor. The victim’s father first reported this to police after finding out that his daughter was pregnant but his daughter would not cooperate with any details at the time.
After the minor gave birth to the child, she then told police she had sex with both Grady Funches and his brother Travis multiple times during October – November of 2013 and that she was unsure which of the two was the actual father of the child.
"We are glad to see some closure for the family of little Jatin Posey, without them having to endure a week long trial, and a long-term, no-parole stay in a maximum security state prison facility for Grady Funches” added Stumbo. “I appreciate the hard work put in by the Greenwood Police Department, medical professionals, and members of my staff who built a strong case and made these convictions possible."
