Why attend the SC Festival of Discovery

If you have been to the SC Festival of Discovery event in Uptown Greenwood then you know how much fun it is.  If you have not been, this article is for you.  Let us explain why you should attend.

First, it’s a true family event!  Everyone of all ages can have a great time.  For the kids, there will be rides like the Ferris Wheel, Flying Saucer, Fun House, Inflatable Slide and most important due to the usual heat, the Interactive Water Feature.  All this fun happens on Friday & Saturday from 5pm – 10pm at the Uptown Market parking lot located on Maxwell Ave.

Arts & Craft lovers will enjoy nearly 20 vendors located at the Uptown Market on Friday 12noon – 10pm and on Saturday 10am – 6pm.  Come enjoy browsing through unique items like handmade jewelry, artisan crafts, custom fire pits, clothing, woodworks and much more.

Music lovers will enjoy the Blues Cruise lineup sponsored by the Index Journal.  This is really a once in a year chance to see some of the best blues players from all around.  If you love blues, just plan to hang out all weekend and hop from venue to venue and take in as many as you desire.

Another crowd favorite each year is the Skin’s Hot Dog Eating Competition.  Come watch 12 minutes of hot dog devouring take place on Saturday, from 12-1pm on the CenturyLink Main Stage.  All competitors have signed up for a chance to take down champion for the past 5 years, Michael Diebold.  Last year Diebold downed 15 hot dogs in 12 minutes.  We will see if he can hold on to the title for the 6th year!

Finally for all the BBQ Lovers!  This is what it’s all about.  Starting Thursday competitors will be preparing and cooking some of the best BBQ found anywhere!  Some of the teams will be selling BBQ and other items throughout the weekend as well as commercial vendors.  You can find some very unique food items to try and we are sure you will not be disappointed.

You will also see some awesome BBQ cooking setups, very funny names and logos of the competitors and watch them prepare their competition BBQ.

You be the judge on Saturday during the People’s Choice Event.  You can purchase $1.00 sample tickets starting at 10:30am until 3:30pm.  Take your tickets and go around to the participating competitors and sample their BBQ.  Voting method is new this year and will be done using your cell phones.  You will be given a number to text your favorite team’s name to once you decide.  The winners will be announced at 5pm.

Also those looking to enjoy beer and wine can do so while walking around the festival in a designated area.  Purchases can be made at a number of local restaurants in the Uptown area.

Please know that we have only highlighted some of the main attractions to this year’s SC Festival of Discovery.  Be sure to visit their website for full details, schedules, maps and more at http://www.uptowngreenwood.com/events/sc-festival-of-discovery
