United Way responds to Hurricane Harvey
Your local United Way is accepting monetary donations to assist in disaster relief efforts

The United Way system worldwide and its corporate partners are responding with immediate efforts and preparing for recovery and long-term rebuilding.

Locally, monetary donations may be made at the United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties’ office at 929 Phoenix Street, Greenwood, SC  29646 and may be given on line at www.unitedwaygac.org through the Give link. All funds will be given to appropriate United Ways in Texas directly assisting with relief efforts.

2-1-1 across all affected areas is operational. If someone you know needs help, they can call 2-1-1, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There may be a wait, but calls will be answered. In case of emergency, dial 9-1-1.

2-1-1 is a free, confidential service that connects people from all communities to essential health and human services—24 hours a day, seven days a week. 2-1-1 will remain open and ready to provide local information about evacuation routes, shelters, food and water, health resources, and other needs throughout the storm.

Denise Manley, President and CEO of United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties, states, “United Way’s overall role is to support long-term recovery efforts to rebuild lives and infrastructure devastated by the disaster and to address educational, financial and health-related challenges.”

United Way Worldwide has created the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund, introduced a text-to-give program, and is coordinating the integration of efforts from United Ways around the world.

United Ways in Texas are providing food, water, and other donated goods and building supplies in cooperation with corporate partners. First responders have been activated and physicians have traveled to Texas. There is an outpouring of support by United Ways around the world.

It is in times of need that we discover the full impact of a community United. As Hurricane Harvey wreaks havoc on homes and communities across Southeastern Texas and Southwestern Louisiana—producing up to 50 inches of rain in some areas—United Ways across the region are helping families face devastating losses from the historic flooding with an eye toward long-term recovery.

The largest of its kind to make landfall in the United States since 2005, Hurricane Harvey is leaving a wake of destruction in its path—but there is hope. From Hurricane Katrina to the flooding in Tamil Nadu, India, United Ways have a history of coordinating community responses to help those affected by natural disasters. Whether by raising funds to aid in relief efforts, engaging first-responders or mobilizing partners to help with on-the-ground long-term recovery, United Ways offer hope and help when it is most needed.

For more information on how you can help, contact Liz Brock at the United Way office, 864-229-4103.
