Nurses at Self Regional Healthcare were honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a program to recognize the incredible efforts of nurses.

The 2017 recipients are Abby Abner, Whitney Patterson, Holly Newman, Marlene Giles, Laci Tucker, Tenille Ouzts, Kela Davis, Todd Smith, Kellie Sweezy, Jennifer Setterlund, Karen Stamps, and Sarah Cheek.

The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The care he and his family received from his nurses inspired this unique award, honoring nurses who make a profound difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation said, "When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do.  The kind of work the nurses at Self Regional Healthcare are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Nurses are nominated by patients, families and colleagues, and are chosen by a committee of nurses at Self Regional Healthcare. Awards are given throughout the year commending each honoree for being an "Extraordinary Nurse."  The certificate reads: "In deep appreciation of all you do, who you are, and the incredibly meaningful difference you make in the lives of so many people."  Honorees also receive a meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa.

President and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare, Jim Pfeiffer, said,“ It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that. I am in awe of the work that our nurses do and how they touch so many lives every day. Our honorees live the mission of Self Regional Healthcare by using their hearts, hands and minds to lead our communities to better health. We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program.”

Linda Russell, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, added, “Nurses are heroes. DAISY provides the opportunity to recognize and celebrate all the “right” that happens in the delivery of nursing care.  Research demonstrates that through this recognition, teamwork is nourished and enhances a sense of trust within the unit and the organization as a whole. I personally thank all who receive this award for choosing to be a nurse, as well as their skill, care and compassion given to patients every day. We are honored to recognize each one of you.  Thank you for your commitment to our patients, their families, and our community.”
