Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies responded to a shooting incident at 115 Johns Creek Road in Hodges SC last night around 11:25 p.m. When Deputies arrived they find one victim shot in the upper chest area and family members administering CPR. Deputies and EMS personnel continued to provide first aid but were unable to save him.
Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox said Joe Darius Black, 48 of Hodges SC died at the scene from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
According to GCSO investigation, they believe the bullet that killed Black came from someone shooting at a nearby road sign. The road sign was located at the T-intersection of Pinetree Drive and Deadfall Road. Investigators say the bullet either passed through the sign or by the sign, traveled through a wooded area in front of Black’s residence and striking him in the chest. Black was sitting on his front porch along with his wife and children when he was struck.
Black was a retired US Marine with over 20 years of service.
A reward will be offered to anyone providing information to the arrest and conviction of the suspect/s for this homicide.
