This past Saturday the Ninety Six Marching Band captured their 10th consecutive 1A Upper State Marching Band Championship when they traveled to Belton-Honea Path High School.

Their show titled “Money” expresses a person going from rags to riches and then losing it all. But by the end of the performance, he finds what money can’t buy, true love - as one band member presents a diamond ring to another.

“Winning the SCBDA Upper State 1A Marching Championship is a fantastic and very exciting achievement for Ninety Six” said David Vickery, NSHS Marching Band Director.  “Our students, staff, and parent volunteers have poured a tremendous amount of time and effort into preparing for this year's competition production entitled "Money".

One thing is for sure, Ninety Six Marching Band is known for their props and this year is no disappointment to their fans.  They feature these 7 ft round stages that roll around the field with images of coins on top of them. During the show these coins are flipped onto their sides facing the audience.  Then to their surprise, they spin them around to find drummers strapped inside and they begin rolling. The drummers continue to drum as they roll over and over bringing the fans to their feet cheering.

We asked Vickery what his feelings were on winning 10 consecutive Upper State Championships. “Ten consecutive Upper State Championships is an impressive feat and one I am extremely proud of. It signifies the longitudinal strength of the band program. Our school district administration and school principals are major contributing factors in our continued success.  They support the high school and middle school band programs and indoor percussion ensemble and the directors for each. Talented teachers, instruction time, resources, and vast parental involvement have driven the success of our band programs. I look forward to much continued success in the future”.

Next, they travel to Batesburg-Leesville for the 1A State competition where they head in a former champions looking to obtain their 4th straight title.
