The American Red Cross Upstate Chapter has expressed its gratitude to the Self Family Foundation for its ongoing commitment to Red Cross disaster services in Greenwood, McCormick and Abbeville counties. The Foundation recently approved a grant of $10,000 to help the Red Cross improve its delivery of lifesaving disaster preparedness, response and recovery services in the three counties.
In its grant request, the Red Cross said communities that are well-prepared for the possibility of disasters fare better when actual emergencies occur. “More lives are saved, less money is spent and everyone recovers faster when a community is resilient.” The Chapter added that, in addition to response and recovery assistance, it helps communities identify and meet local preparedness needs, thanks to the important support of The Self Family Foundation and other Prepare SC partners.
It cited the lingering impact of disasters such as house fires on individuals and families, especially children, and said the impact can be reduced and even prevented by improving safety awareness and emergency preparedness skills.
It added, “An investment in Prepare SC helps support Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers, who are the first line of response, providing immediate humanitarian relief to victims when disaster strikes. It also supports the growth of our relationship with our emergency partners across the state.”
The statement said, with support of its partners, the Red Cross has been able to prepare and protect citizens in Greenwood, McCormick and Abbeville counties by installing more than 1,000 smoke alarms, replacing worn alarm batteries and creating residential fire escape plans for families. Last year, across the three counties, Red Cross volunteers and staff responded to nearly 80 home fires or other local disasters and assisted 243 individuals.
Lisa Colby, executive director of the Upstate Red Cross Chapter, said, “Our volunteers do the selfless work of helping victims begin the work of recovery. Without them and vital partners like the Self Family Foundation, we could not alleviate human suffering each and every day.”
In addition to providing shelter, food and emotional support to victims of disasters, the American Red Cross supplies nearly half of the U.S blood supply; teaches life-saving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.
The Red Cross is a charitable organization not a government agency and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. More information is available at www.recross.org/SC
