SC Rep. John McCravy presented Sgt. Benjamin Baker of the Greenwood Police Department a certificate from the SC House of Representatives on July 17th, honoring him for saving the life of an injured person.
Sgt. Baker saved a person from bleeding to death on May 5th 2019. He arrived first on the scene of a major injury, applied a tourniquet to an arterial hemorrhage, and held it until EMS arrived. Greenwood Police Chief Gerald Brooks said there "can't be any doubt" Baker saved this person's life in a Greenwood City Council meeting at which Baker was awarded a medal for lifesaving.
“We commend him for his quick thinking and his calm under pressure,” the certificate, signed by the Speaker of the SC House Jay Lucas, reads. It also commends Baker for his preparedness and his nine years as a police officer. "His department, community, and state are very proud of him," it reads.
"Sgt. Baker and people like him make Greenwood County the amazing place it is." McCravy said after the recognition. "I am so thankful for what they do."
