World AIDS Day observance at Faith Outreach Community Church

Upper Savannah Care Services will observe World AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Faith Outreach Community Church, 1007 Cambridge Street, Abbeville, S.C. The observance is set from 12:00pm through 3:00PM and the event which is sponsored by Upper Savannah Care Services, is an internationally observed day of remembrance of those who have died from the disease and is also dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. The theme of this year’s event is “Fighting HIV and AIDS, not People Living with HIV or AIDS”. “Public awareness is also an important component of what we do”, says Jason L. Williams, Executive Director. “We have consistently served around 300+ clients in our service areas each year, so this is an issue that is quite relevant to Greenwood and surrounding areas,” Williams adds. The event will be followed by a small reception.

This year’s special guest speaker is Ms. Pamela Sykes who resides in Charleston, SC. Ms. Sykes is a gifted speaker and communicator. Blessed with an engaging and inspiring personality, Ms. Sykes has appeared on numerous local television shows, radio stations, WJNI, WMGL, and WQIZ. And newspaper articles such as: The Post and Courier, The Chronicles. Southern AIDS Living Quilt-Women. In recognition of her work and commitment to eradicating this disease, Ms. Sykes was inducted into the first group of women for POSITIVE (Proactive, Optimistic, Sisters, In-Touch, Involved, Validated and Empowered) VOICES. POSITIVE VOICES is a peer-led leadership initiative for women living with HIV. Thereafter, she became a graduate of Common Threads. Common Threads is a speaker training program of the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA). Ms. Sykes became a member of Life Center Cathedral where she served under Bishop Brian Moore, while a member there She began an HIV Ministry advocating for those living with HIV/AIDS. God created a platform for her to unveil her life to others as a living testimony.

Upper Savannah Care Services is the only AIDS service organization in the Lakelands area serving Greenwood, Abbeville, Edgefield, Laurens, McCormick and Saluda counties since 1995.
