Dr. Seagroves grew up in rural Tennessee where she was the first in her family to graduate from college. She attended MTSU in Murfreesboro, TN. During college, she worked at Vanderbilt University in the Neuro ICU where her love of human anatomy and physiology flourished. She subsequently attended medical school in the Netherlands Antilles at Saba University School of Medicine and completed a Master’s degree in Hyperbaric Medicine as well as her MD.

Hodges man arrested on attempted murder charges

Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies arrested a man from Hodges after he shot at another man on Nations Road.  Dominique Jorday Stewart, 27 of 203 Indian Branch Road, Hodges SC was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

According to the incident report, the victim attempted to visit his girlfriend’s home on Nations Road.  As he left her home, he noticed Stewart in a camaro near Brush Road. He then exited his Camaro and began shooting at him.  

Deputies did observe a hole in his passenger window and some broken glass.  The victim fled the scene and called 911.

Greenwood man facing triple murder charges from Abbeville shooting

A Greenwood man has been arrested in connection to a shooting in Abbeville County that claimed the life of three with one still in the hospital.

Officers responded Sunday morning around 3 a.m. to Hickory Heights Apartments on Cambridge Street in Abbeville.  They found two victims dead and a third died after being transported to the local hospital.  A fourth person remains in the hospital and their condition is unknown currently.

Late faculty member wins Moore Award, colleagues reflect on his impactful career

Previous winners of Lander University’s Moore Award for Excellence in General Education Teaching have received praise for their dedication to general education courses, as well as their devotion to students of all academic disciplines who enter these courses with varying levels of aptitude. Those who knew Jack Burton, the 2019 recipient of the Moore Award, confidently attest that he, too, fit the bill.

As a Lander alum with a B.S. in environmental science, Burton enjoyed his role as a lecturer of chemistry at his alma mater. He loved having the opportunity to help prepare students for a successful future, regardless of their declared major, in addition to helping many uncover a hidden passion for science and the environment.

Greenwood Pilot Club donates needed supplies to GCSO

The Greenwood Pilot Club stopped by GCSO yesterday afternoon to donate sixteen extra tourniquets to add to the School Resource Officers emergency kits. A tourniquet is a device which applies pressure to a limb or extremity so as to limit – but not stop – the flow of blood. This item is used in emergency situations. This donation will allow every

Smell My Smoke Partners with Local Sorority to Raise Scholarship Funds

The Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host a community yard sale, June 15th in the parking lot of New Spring Church at1306 Hwy 72 Bypass in Greenwood SC to raise funds for annual scholarships given to area high school seniors.  

Todd Damon, owner of Smell My Smoke BBQ, is supporting the fundraising effort by selling barbeque on site and donating the profits to the Chapter.  This is an ongoing effort by Damon to support community organizations that exist to serve others. “I want to give back to the community, especially if the effort supports positive efforts youth are making.”  This event allows Damon to help the Sorority’s Chapter provide scholarships for seniors in Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick, and Saluda counties.

Professional volunteer judges from the America in Bloom (AIB) national awards program will visitGreenwood, SC on June 20 and 21. This is Greenwood’s fourth year as an America in Bloom participant, and is one of the many proud and passionate communities across America working on local revitalization programs with an eye to receiving a prestigious America in Bloom national award.

In addition to receiving detailed written evaluation from the judges citing strengths and opportunities for improvement, participants receive a bloom rating and special mention for what the judges deem to be an extraordinary project or program.

Inclement Weather Prompts Venue Change for Festival's Juried Arts and Crafts Show

The SC Festival of Flowers’ main weekend kicks off on Friday and organizers have moved the event venue of the Juried Arts and Crafts Show from the outdoor Uptown Market to indoors at the James Medford Family Event Center, located on the campus of Piedmont Technical College.  Based on National Weather Service reports for the weekend, anticipated inclement weather prompted the venue change from the Uptown area.

Admission is free and the public is invited to visit the show from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th.  “You’ll be amazed at the incredible handmade and creative works, so get ready to shop!,” said Austin Hough, Festival Coordinator. The show features handmade, original work from talented artists and crafts people.   “You can also see the creative process in action with several of our exhibitors demonstrating their craft in their booths,” said Hough.

Festival Photography Exhibit Features 150+ Prints Location Moved to PTC's Medford Center

The SC Festival of Flowers Photography Exhibit & Contest, one of South Carolina’s largest summer exhibitions, has attracted over 150 individual prints for this year’s show.  According to event chair Kendall Adams, “The show is an annual tradition of the SC Festival, and promotes an interest in photography and showcases the talents of area photographers.”  The public is invited to view the amazing images captured by amateur and professional photographers!

38th Annual Stock Car Race benefit for Shriner's Hospitals

The Laurens County Shrine Club is conducting its 38th Annual Stock Car Race Tuesday Night, June 11, 2019 at the Laurens County Speedway located at 435 Racetrack Road in Laurens, SC.  The pit gates open at 4:00 p.m. and the grandstands will open at 6:00 p.m. Pit admission is $35 for ages 12 and up and grandstand admission is $20 for ages 12 and up.  Children 11 and under are admitted free. This is an annual benefit race sponsored by the Laurens County Shrine Club to benefit Shriner's Hospitals.
