Attitude is Everything for Piedmont Tech Student Living with Cerebral Palsy

Dillon Greenway is only 21, but he’s already had a lot of work done.

By “work,” Greenway refers to the many surgeries he’s endured over his young life to manage physical difficulties presented by cerebral palsy (CP). The Piedmont Technical College (PTC) student is pretty recognizable on campus, partly because of the rolling walker that he uses to help him get around, but mostly by the sunshine that seems to follow him in attitude and spirit.

Program admires the dedication of senior citizen volunteers

The Cass Elias McCarter Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Program admires the great contribution senior citizen volunteers provide for the program. In honor of National Senior Citizens Day Aug. 21, 2018, GAL salutes the senior citizens who serve as child advocates. More than 44 percent of GAL’s volunteer pool consists of volunteers age 60 or older.

Dr. Richard Steet Named as Director of Research at Greenwood Genetic Center

The Greenwood Genetic Center has named Richard Steet, PhD as Director of Research and Head of the JC Self Research Institute. He joins the GGC faculty from the University of Georgia where he was Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance in locating Natasha Shree Brown B/F 45 years of age. Brown is 5’00” tall and approximately 200lbs. 

Brown is believed to be driving a 2016 White Kia Rio SC tag VT95078.

Woman arrested after arguing with neighbor arrested

Greenwood City Police responded to a domestic dispute on Aug, 9, 2018 to find a woman standing in a doorway naked and yelling at her husband.

Latonga Evan Johnson, 49 of 126 S University Street, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with Drawing a weapon in affray.

Teen arrested for breaking into local pawn shop

Greenwood City Police have arrested a teenager in connection to the burglary that occurred on July 26, 2018 at the Greenwood Pawn Shop.

Christopher Ty’Ray Hamilton, 17 of 121 Sumpter Court, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with 2nd degree burglary and grand larceny.

PTC Graduate Climbing Construction Industry Ladder

It’s only appropriate that Piedmont Tech graduate Drew Jeffries is rapidly climbing the rungs of the construction industry ladder. He has a sincere passion for it ― a passion forged while a student in a building construction technology program known for its enthusiastic, tell-it-like-it-is instructors.

This spring, the Columbia-based McCrory Construction Company promoted Jeffries to assistant project manager, and his new project is the construction of an assisted-living facility in North Carolina. He credits excellent training at Piedmont Technical College (PTC) for much of his success.

Greenwood man arrested over sexual acts toward a minor

Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after receiving information that he exposed his genitalia to a minor multiple times over the past 6 years.

Roger Benton Neal, 46 of Greenwood was arrested and charged with Criminal solicitation of a minor and pornography.  Neal is already a registered sex offender from being charged with criminal sexual conduct 2nd degree back in May 2004.

The person reporting the incident to the Sheriff’s Office said they have a recording with Neal admitting to the sexual acts and that he has been messaging the minor on facebook messenger.

Dr. Ashley Harte Receives Hospice Medical Director Certification

The American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine announced that Ashley Harte, MD was recently granted the Hospice Medical Director Certified credential by the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board. Dr. Harte was recognized for her commitment to improving the quality of life by displaying professional competency in the hospice industry.  In order to qualify physicians are required to demonstrate 2 years and at least 400 hours of hospice activities.  In addition, they are required to pass the Certification Exam.

Jean Nelson donated funding to Burton Center recently to provide a backup generator for the Bonds ICF (Intermediate Care Facility) Community Residence in Greenwood.  Bonds Community Residence was the first non-ambulatory residence in South Carolina and is home for eight people.

Scholarships Established at Lander University in Honor of Fallen Science Student

The parents of James Logan Lusk have established two Lander scholarships to honor the memory of their son, who lost his life in a single car accident earlier this year.

Beginning with the 2018 academic year, the Logan Lusk Angel Memorial Science Scholarship and Logan Lusk Angel Memorial General Funded Scholarship will be awarded to a science major student and a general major student in need of financial assistance, and who can demonstrate the same passion and commitment to leadership exhibited by Logan in the areas of academics, community service and extracurricular activities.

Global Manufacturer Picks Piedmont Tech Facility as U.S. Training Site

It started quietly at first. A low buzz, numerous meetings, contract development and ― finally ― the arrival of the first three IRB 140 robots to the Piedmont Technical College (PTC) Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) in Laurens. This spring marked the official launch of a partnership between PTC and ABB, a leading supplier of industrial robots that serves 53 countries around the world.

American Cancer Society R.A.T. P.A.C.

 The Lakelands have a rich history with the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Both the Abbeville/McCormick and Greenwood events will be celebrating their 25th anniversaries, with Laurens and Newberry marking their 24th year of Relay. Over this time, we have been fortunate to have many talented and wonderful volunteers. They have been innovative in their quest to make Relay fun and successful.
