Lander students survey trees on campus to identify environmental benefits

A trio of Lander University science students led by a faculty member, have completed a comprehensive study showing that the trees in the older historic section of the campus are responsible for remarkable ecological benefits. Team Tree-mendous, as they called themselves, conducted the semester-long project to raise awareness of the environmental impact of trees and possibly influence future campus landscaping plans.

Self Regional Healthcare Foundation announces recipient of Heydel Respiratory Therapy Scholarship

The Self Regional Healthcare Foundation has announced that Newberry native Julie Culbertson is the recipient of the second M. John and Drenda Heydel Respiratory Therapy Scholarship.  Culbertson is in her final year of the respiratory therapy program, and plans to work with Critical Care patients with her RT degree.

Hometown girl wins Miss Travelers Rest 2015
Madison Boatwright, a native of Greenwood, South Carolina was crowned Miss Travelers Rest 2015 at the Bonds Career Center in Greer on Saturday, November 22nd.

A 2014 graduate of Clemson University with a Bachelors Degree in English and Minor in Communications, Madison plans to pursue her Masters Degree in Business Administration from The University of South Carolina.

City of Greenwood Retains ISO Rating of 2

Greenwood, SC –The City of Greenwood has received official notification from the Insurance Service Office (ISO) that the City has retained its structural fire suppression delivery system classification of Two (2). 

The Greenwood Fire Department was surveyed by ISO this past August. Based on the survey, the Department’s class rating will remain a two (2). ISO uses a ten-point scale, with one (1) being the best and ten (10) being the worst.   Of the nearly 50,000 communities reviewed nationwide in 2014, less than two (2) percent received an ISO rating of 2 or better.

Area Lions Hold 67th Annual Christmas Banquet at John de la Howe School

For the 67th straight holiday season, members of area Lions Clubs gathered at John de la Howe School Dec. 11 to assure students there of a merry Christmas. Members of the Abbeville, Calhoun Falls, Due West and McCormick Lions Clubs hosted their annual Christmas banquet on the John de la Howe campus and followed their long tradition of “passing the bucket.”

Westview Ends a Successful United Way Campaign

Westview students and faculty raised $6,110.34 during the United Way campaign nearly doubling their school goal!  

On November 25th, Westview celebrated with a United Way pep rally that featured a football throwing contest, an ice cream eating contest, bobbing for footballs, an end zone touchdown dance, a pie throwing contest and a contest to shave the head of a teacher and student who raised the least amount of money for United Way.
