Cruise-In for HospiceCare of the Piedmont

The Rock ‘N’ Roll Cruisers sponsored a Cruise-In Saturday, May 16th in Uptown Greenwood.  They presented HospiceCare of the Piedmont with over $2,600 to assist terminally ill patients and their families.  The generosity and compassion of our community make it possible for HospiceCare to continue to meet the needs of our patients and their loved ones.

Two Piedmont Technical College students were recently among those named to the Phi Theta Kappa South Carolina All-State Academic Team. Malaurie Hullings of Plum Branch and Kenneth Washington of Hodges were among the 29 students honored at a ceremony in Columbia.

Brookey & Connie need a good home

Brookey is a beach bum at heart with dreams of sand between her toes. When you see her sunny disposition you would never suspect that this happy go lucky, one-year-old pup was ever at risk of an uncertain future. Brookey was diagnosed with heartworm disease at the shelter, but with treatment and plenty of care, Brookey is all smiles now and ready to find a forever home.

Applebee's of Greenwood would like to thank everyone for coming to help raise money at their Cornhole Tournament benefiting the Make-A-Wish foundation on Saturday, April 18th. With the help of the community, $700 was raised to send an upstate child, Ivan, to Disney World for his wish.

Holden Smith receives David Sherer Memorial Scholarship

Piedmont Technical College student and Ninety Six resident Holden Smith (right) was recently awarded the David Sherer Memorial Scholarship at the college’s annual scholarship luncheon. Smith, an automotive technology major, is pictured with Chad Teague, scholarship committee member. This annual scholarship is available to an Automotive Technology student with a GPA of 2.5 or higher who has financial need.

This phenomenal exhibit, developed and produced by The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia PA, contains 19 interactive stations which mix history and science. A man and a woman from Star, S.C., were arrested Thursday after agents with the Greenwood Drug Enforcement Unit discovered more than 20 grams of ice, a strong form of methamphetamine, in their vehicle.

GGC Creates 'McAlhany Family Center for Collaborative Research'

John and Norma McAlhany of Greenwood have established ‘The McAlhany Family Center for Collaborative Research’ at the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC). Through a $1 million gift to the GGC Foundation in honor of their children and grandchildren, the McAlhanys are providing resources to support research efforts between GGC and collaborators from other institutions with the ultimate goal of preventing and treating genetic disorders and disabilities.
