Drug dealer receives maximum sentence for selling pills that led to overdose death

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday that a Greenwood drug dealer was sentenced to 20 years in prison after selling the dangerous drug Fentanyl to a Ninety Six man, leading to the man’s overdose death.

Fatal vehicle accident claims life of Ninety Six man

A fatal accident occurred this morning on Siloam Church Road around 5:44 a.m. this morning. Daryl Luke McCarthy, 29 of 201 Pinelake Drive, Ninety Six SC died at the scene according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox. 

Report says McCarthy was traveling on Siloam Church Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple objects before coming to a stop.  McCarthy was the only person in the vehicle.

Gwd CPW Hacked

Greenwood CPW issued out an email to customers explaining their system had been accessed by foreign hackers.  Importantly, they say no personal identifying data (social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, physical addresses, credit card information or bank information were compromised.

SCDPS kicks off Annual Safety Belt Campaign: #WHATMAKESYOUCLICK

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) begins its annual Buckle, Up SC, enforcement mobilization on May 21, 2018. The special enforcement period will run through June 3, 2018, and is supported by a new outdoor advertising and social media campaign: #WhatMakesYouClick.

Buckle Up, SC is the department’s annual safety belt campaign with an emphasis on safe summer travel in advance of Memorial Day weekend.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (Keurig), a leader in specialty coffee and innovative single-serve brewing systems, today announced plans to construct a new, state-of-the-art roasting and packaging facility in Spartanburg County, S.C. Voter Registration Office issues important upcoming primary information

The Democratic and Republican Statewide Primaries will be held on Tuesday, June 12th with tentative Runoff(s) scheduled for June 26th.   As with all Primaries there is usually confusion, which doesn’t have to be the case if you follow these simple guidelines.

Primaries are held to determine the Democratic and Republican candidates that will be on the General Election ballot in November. If a candidate has no opposition from his or her own party, their name will not appear on the ballot in the June Primaries.   Convention candidates and non partisan candidates will not appear on the Primary ballots nor will the write-in option.

New Assistant Principal Named at Northside Middle School

Northside Middle School will add a new face to their administrative team for the 2018- 2019 school year. Sally Moore has been named as Assistant Principal at Northside.

Moore has served as a Math teacher at Greenwood High School for the last 13 years. She has worked as Greenwood High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Coordinator since 20011. Moore graduated from Anderson College in 2005 and went on to earn a Master’s of Education degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom from Walden University.

Man arrested after firing shot into air

Greenwood City Police Officers arrested a man after he pulled a knife on another and fired his pistol into the air.

Thomas Charles Price, 57 of 212 Mill Ave, Greenwood was arrested and charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, discharging a firearm in city limits and drawing a weapon in affray.

One of the most celebrated summer festivals in South Carolina, Greenwood’s Festival of Flowers, will host the 9th annual Topiaries and Tastings Wine Walk in Uptown Greenwood on Saturday June 2, 2018.  

Participants will sample some of the most exceptional wines offered in Uptown Greenwood’s restaurants and shops. This leisurely-yet-lively walk will feature performances by local musicians at many of the wine sampling stops, along with a close-up view of all of the beautiful topiaries, including the famous Lily the Mermaid and King Kong, along with 40 others. All 42 topiaries created for the 51st annual Festival of Flowers celebration will be on display June 1 - 30, 2018.

The incentive program that allows SC SNAP recipients to double their SNAP dollars to purchase more fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farmers markets or from participating farmers returns this summer.

Woman found dead in house fire

A house fire that occurred on May 10 claimed the life of a Greenwood resident.

Elaine Marie Pepper, 76 of 313 Manning Road, Greenwood was found dead in the house as firefighters extinguished the fire.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, May 11 as the cause of death remains under investigation at this time according to Greenwood Coroner Sonny Cox.

Greenwood Talks about Race - Series Invites Discussion

For three months, Greenwood citizens, black and white, have gathered at the Greenwood County Library to explore issues, past and present, related to race in the United States.

The final event in the series, Let’s Talk About Race in America, will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 20, and will focus on the novel, “Four Spirits,” which is set in the wake of racial tensions in 1960s Birmingham, Ala.

Symetra Players Chasing Dreams at The Links at Stoney Point

For several individuals in the 144-player Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Women’s Health Classic field, this week has been about more than getting ready for another Symetra Tour event; it has involved chasing dreams. 

A total of 37 players that eventually made their way to The Links at Stoney Point Golf Club first stopped at Dunwoody Country Club, just outside of Atlanta, on Mondayto compete in the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open Sectional Qualifying Round. One day, 36 holes and four spots up for grabs.

Rep McCravy recognizes Leath Correctional Institute employees

Rep. John McCravy (R-Greenwood) recognized 26 long-time Corrections officers and public servants employed by Leath Correctional Institute on Monday.

After the National Anthem, played by the Leath Inmate Crescendo Band, Warden Patricia J. Yeldell opened the ceremony. An honorary slideshow thanking the long-time employees was shown, and an uplifting song given from a young lady named Ivory Baylor. McCravy, after joking about the difficulty in getting through security, spoke about the dedication of the employees. Then he joined Yeldell in presenting 26 certificates of commendation from the SC House of Representatives to the employees.

Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina Awards $197,500 to 13 Grantees through Immigrant Families Initiative

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina is pleased to announce the 2018 Immigrant Families Initiative grants totaling $197,500 to thirteen organizations serving South Carolina’s immigrant and refugee populations. Immigrants represent nearly 5% of South Carolina’s total population and research shows these individuals make multiple contributions to the state’s economy sharing business, leadership, education, labor and other skills. However, a large number of immigrants and children of immigrants experience poverty across South Carolina.
