Wedding Expo March 5 highlights historic Cokesbury College as wedding venue

Historic Cokesbury College, located at 210 College Drive in Cokesbury, S.C., will host its first Wedding Expo Thursday, March 5, from 3 – 7 p.m.

Guests will be able to tour the three-story facility and its spacious grounds and talk to area vendors specializing in catering, flowers, gifts, music, wedding planning and fashions for women and men. The expo is sponsored by the Cokesbury College Historical and Recreational Commission.

Lander Business Students Gain Insight from SCBA Banking Professionals

Some 200 college students from across the state participated in the South Carolina Bankers Association's (SCBA) "Banking Careers 101" program, held on February 12 in Columbia. Eight business students from Lander University attended the educational program, which is designed to help those who are interested in banking, finance and accounting learn more about the banking industry.

The Greenwood Festival Chorale will present a concert of Melodic Medleys from hit musicals on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:30 pm, at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood. Included in the program are songs from Les Miserables, West Side Story, Ragtime, and favorite tunes from Irving Berlin.

Fatal moped accident on Hwy 34

A Greenwood man, riding his moped, was fatally injured after being struck by a vehicle on Hwy 34 just before noon on February 17, 2020.

According to Greenwood Coroner Sonny Cox, the moped rider was identified as Tony Lee Patterson, 51 of Old Abbeville Hwy, Greenwood SC.

Lander University Campus Dining will soon include Chick-Fil-A

Lander University officials have announced that Atlanta-based fast food chain Chick-Fil-A will be opening a location on Lander’s campus.

While an official timeline is still being worked out, the university and Chick-Fil-A hope the campus store will be fully operational by the beginning of the 2020-21 academic year. The location will be a full-service restaurant, initially serving lunch and dinner only, before transitioning into serving breakfast.

Registration Open for Greenwood Regional Management Conference

Greenwood SC Chamber of Commerce will hold its 6th annual Greenwood Regional Management Conference on Thursday, February 20th with the theme of creating “The Greatest Workplace on Earth.”  The conference is presented by Piedmont Technical College and Lonza.

“Five Generations At Work: Recruiting and Retaining Talent From Every Generation” will be the keynote topic presented by Dr. Rebecca Battle-Bryant, Ph.D., SHRM-CP, president and owner of Battle Plan Consulting, LLC, a full-service human resource and workforce development consulting firm specializing in human resource management and employee development solutions.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Battle-Bryant was the VP of HR & Workforce Development at United Infrastructure Group; assistant executive director, Workforce & Economic Development, at SC Dept. of Employment and Workforce; vice-president of Corporate Training & Economic Development at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, and in progressive management positions at SCANA Corporation.

Two men facing attempted murder charges

Greenwood City Police responded to McLees Ave and Florence Street on the early morning of Feb 11, 2020 in reference of multiple gunshots into a residence.

On McLees Ave, one house with several inside was struck several times.  Officers saw several bullet holes throughout the residence and to a vehicle parked outside.  While investigating, Officers heard more gunshots about a couple blocks over.  They quickly left to investigate.

Beautification Group Seeks Lake Greenwood Clean Up Day Volunteers

Community volunteers, including adults and student groups, are encouraged to participate in the 12th annual Lake Greenwood Cleanup Day on Saturday, March 7, 2020 from 9:00 a.m. until 12 noon.

Annually, the event is coordinated by Keep Greenwood County Beautiful (KGCB), a citizen-led organization that engages individuals, neighborhoods, and businesses in creating a beautiful, clean and healthy environment.

Over the last two years, over 15,000 pounds of trash have been collected according to Donna Sightler, KGCB Vice Chair and event coordinator.  “Greenwood’s number one asset, our lake, is so important to the economic vitality of our community, and we must take care of it,” said Sightler.   Since 2009, KGCB has removed over 53,000 pounds of trash from the shorelines of Lake Greenwood.  Sightler is also the Greenwood County Public Works Director and is passionate about maintaining a clean environment.

Patient Foundation with GGC Ties Awarded Funding through Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to Drive Progress Against Rare Diseases

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), created by Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg in 2015, announced $13.5 million in funding to 30 patient-led organizations that are working to find treatments and cures for rare diseases. These grants are part of CZI’s Rare As One Project, aimed at supporting and lifting up the work that patient communities are doing to accelerate research and drive progress in the fight against rare diseases.

WCTEL Sponsors Trip to Washington, D.C. for High School Juniors to apply
For the 27th year in a row, WCTEL is sponsoring an educational trip to Washington, D.C. for one local High School Junior on June 6 – 10, 2020 to attend the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) Youth Tour. The youth tour introduces the telecommunications industry to students from rural America within a legislative context. Aside from the educational aspects of this trip, students will also tour many of the historical sites in the nation’s capital including the Vietnam, Korean and World War II memorials, the Supreme Court, the Smithsonian Museums, Arlington National Cemetery and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials.

SC DSS observes February as Vulnerable Adult Awareness Month
Gov. Henry McMaster has declared February 2020 as Vulnerable Adult Awareness Month in the state, which gives the South Carolina Department of Social Services the chance to highlight the agency’s Adult Advocacy Division. 

“Our states senior citizens and adults with disabilities are valued members of our families, our society and our communities,” the Governor’s Proclamation states. “[The] observance of Vulnerable Adult Awareness Month reminds us of our shared responsibility to help ensure the health, safety, dignity and well-being of all disabled and elderly adults each and every day.”

Two killed in head-on collision

SCHP responded to a head-on collision that occurred on Old Laurens Road in Greenwood around 11:45 a.m. today.

Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox said that Kierra L & Tierra L Cunningham, both 26 of Haltiwanger Road, Greenwood died at the scene.

SCHP said the Cunninghams were traveling in a 2017 Kia Sedan when it collided head-on with a Ford 350 truck.

The driver of the pickup was transported to Self Regional with serious injuries.

GGC's Steet Awarded $100,000 Grant from National MPS Society

The National MPS Society has awarded a $100,000 grant to the Greenwood Genetic Center (GGC). Richard Steet, PhD, Director of Research at GGC, is the lead investigator on the two-year project aimed at improving the diagnosis and hastening treatment for patients with these rare disorders.

Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) and related disorders, as a group, affect approximately 1 in 25,000 individuals. The MPS Society provides support resources for families as well as funding for research into this group of disorders which can affect the health, development, quality of life and lifespan of affected individuals. GGC has a long-standing interest in MPS disorders including providing clinical care, diagnostic testing, and research for many of these rare conditions.

Piedmont Agency on Aging is proud to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from Meals on Wheels America and Caesars Foundation to help develop its Friendly Visitor program for its Meals on Wheels clients. Funding will support Piedmont Agency on Aging in offering seniors an additional opportunity for socialization beyond regular meal delivery.

On Feb 4, 2020 Greenwood City Police responded to complaint calls of a man walking down Truett Ave with his buttock exposed.  As they arrive, they saw a man walking without a shirt on and half of his buttock exposed.

Chamber Announces Run Your Ice Off Winners for 5K and 8K Races

Adult and youth runners braved a chilly morning to participate in the 11th annual Run Your Ice Off 5K and 8K races, presented by Self Regional Healthcare.  The Greenwood SC Chamber created the event over a decade ago to further expand its sports offerings to promote community wellness and healthy lifestyles.  “In addition to the SC Festival’s 5K & 1 Mile Run event and the Bee Buzzin’ Bike Tour, the Chamber had requests to offer another race opportunity for the community,” said Angelle LaBorde, President & CEO.

The SC Festival of Flowers is bringing back the Flower of the Year Art Competition as a part of its 53rd annual SC Festival of Flowers celebration in Greenwood, SC.  According to Festival Chair, Lisa Sanders, the Festival’s Steering Committee selected the Hydrangea as the 2020 Flower of the Year.   This flower was featured during the 2006 Festival by artist Tina M.
