Community Initiatives, Inc. Host 2nd Annual Emerald City Gala

Community Initiatives, Inc. will host the second annual Mardi Gras themed Emerald City Gala on Friday, June 22nd at 7:30pm. The gala will be held at the Arts Center located at 120 Main Street.

A tour of the finest cuisine will be presented on the menu that will feature recipes from favorite New Orleans eateries such as the Palace Café, Longue Vue House, Brogne’s, and Emeril’s New Orleans.

Piedmont Tech Massage Therapy Clinic is Open for Summer Business

Are your muscles in a jumble? Is your back out of whack? Worry not, for help is close at hand. Piedmont Technical College's massage therapy program is offering a massage clinic open to the public from May 24 to July 19. Swedish integrated massages will be administered by third-semester PTC massage therapy student interns under the supervision of SC Licensed Massage Therapists Nina Autorino, LMBT, and Thomas DiFedele, BA, LMBT, DC. The PTC Student Massage Clinic is located at 313 North Emerald Road in Greenwood. Hours of operation are as follows:

NS Student brings toy gun onto school bus

School District 52 issued out a recorded phone message today informing parents of an incident that occurred Wednesday on a school bus.  The message said a younger student brought a toy gun onto a school bus.  When the driver was made aware, he took possession of the toy gun. 

At no time was any students in danger.  No message was distributed on Wednesday due to the low threat but after several phone calls, the district issued a district wide phone message informing parents of the situation.

Woman arrested on harassment charge

A harassment case that started back in 2016 leads to an arrest of an Easley woman.

Traci Lee Rogers, 38 of 601 Pope Field Road, Easley was arrested for harassment.  The police report says Rogers continuously contacted her once boyfriend.  Many call continued using multiple phones.  The victim also informed investigators that he was afraid of Rogers as she was a concealed weapons permit holder and carries a gun everywhere she goes.

A warrant was issued and Rogers was arrested and transported to the Greenwood County Detention center.

Team from Lonza Wins Industry Cup in PTC Foundation Golf Classic

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, a day at the office turns out to be a magnificent day on the links. And sometimes, if you play well, you get all the glory. The Piedmont Technical College Foundation held its 26th Annual Golf Classic last month, and a team from Lonza in Greenwood took one of the event’s top prizes ― The Industry Cup.

Voters Cast Absentee Ballots for June Primaries

COLUMBIA, SC (May 23, 2018) – Absentee voting for the Statewide Primaries is underway at county elections offices throughout the state.  As of today, nearly 15,000 absentee ballots had been issued statewide.  Voters who are age 65 and older, who will be on vacation, or who can’t go to the polls due to their job are all qualified to vote absentee.   If you meet one of these or any of the other qualifying reasons, you can vote early by absentee ballot.  The State Election Commission wants you to know how to vote absentee and the deadlines for doing so.

Man sentenced to more than 18 years in prison for DUI crash that killed step-daughter

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Monday that a Honea Path man will spend more than 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges in connection to a crash that left his 7-year-old step-daughter dead.

Hejaz Looney Toons Boat Run On The Water

Hejaz is hosting the Looney Toons Boat Run on Lake Greenwood this coming Saturday, May 26.  All proceeds will benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children. 

It’s $20 per hand which includes a $5 Gift Certificate to the Break on the Lake.

This boat run will begin at Lighthouse Landing at 11 a.m. and ends at the Break on the Lake by 3 p.m.  The following is a list of the stops in order.  1. Lighthouse Landing, 2. Skippers Landing, 3. Moon Landing, 4. Greenwood Shrine Club, 5. Break on the Lake.

Drug dealer receives maximum sentence for selling pills that led to overdose death

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Friday that a Greenwood drug dealer was sentenced to 20 years in prison after selling the dangerous drug Fentanyl to a Ninety Six man, leading to the man’s overdose death.

Fatal vehicle accident claims life of Ninety Six man

A fatal accident occurred this morning on Siloam Church Road around 5:44 a.m. this morning. Daryl Luke McCarthy, 29 of 201 Pinelake Drive, Ninety Six SC died at the scene according to Greenwood County Coroner Sonny Cox. 

Report says McCarthy was traveling on Siloam Church Road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck multiple objects before coming to a stop.  McCarthy was the only person in the vehicle.

Greenwood CPW issued out an email to customers explaining their system had been accessed by foreign hackers.  Importantly, they say no personal identifying data (social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, physical addresses, credit card information or bank information were compromised.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) begins its annual Buckle, Up SC, enforcement mobilization on May 21, 2018. The special enforcement period will run through June 3, 2018, and is supported by a new outdoor advertising and social media campaign: #WhatMakesYouClick.

Buckle Up, SC is the department’s annual safety belt campaign with an emphasis on safe summer travel in advance of Memorial Day weekend.

Voter Registration Office issues important upcoming primary information

The Democratic and Republican Statewide Primaries will be held on Tuesday, June 12th with tentative Runoff(s) scheduled for June 26th.   As with all Primaries there is usually confusion, which doesn’t have to be the case if you follow these simple guidelines.

Primaries are held to determine the Democratic and Republican candidates that will be on the General Election ballot in November. If a candidate has no opposition from his or her own party, their name will not appear on the ballot in the June Primaries.   Convention candidates and non partisan candidates will not appear on the Primary ballots nor will the write-in option.

New Assistant Principal Named at Northside Middle School

Northside Middle School will add a new face to their administrative team for the 2018- 2019 school year. Sally Moore has been named as Assistant Principal at Northside.

Moore has served as a Math teacher at Greenwood High School for the last 13 years. She has worked as Greenwood High School’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Coordinator since 20011. Moore graduated from Anderson College in 2005 and went on to earn a Master’s of Education degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom from Walden University.
