Body found in burned vehicle

On December 8, 2017 at approximately 1700 hours the Greenwood County Coroner’s Office was notified by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office that they were at a scene on Old Hastings Road in Ninety Six where a vehicle had been totally destroyed by fire.

Chase ends in crash, power outage and school lockdown

The Greenwood City Police was involved in a short vehicle chase with a suspect wanted on several warrants including federal probation violations.  The chase ended as the suspect crashed into a tree and power pole on E. Durst Ave in Greenwood.

Power was lost throughout the neighborhood including Eleanor Rice Elementary School.  The school also went on a temporary lock-down status for safety precautions.

Shooting on Camden Street
Greenwood Police are investigating a shooting that just occurred on Camden Street. One male was shot and transported to the hospital, his condition is unknown at this time.

Greenwood SNAP, TANF Coordinator Selected as Employee of the Month

LaToya Roundtree, a SNAP and TANF program coordinator in the Greenwood County DSS office, is the Economic Services Employee of the Month for November.

According to her nomination, Roundtree “continuously finds ways to motivate and inspire the Economic Services staff. She has made serving our clients the top priority while balancing the importance of office morale and staff accountability. Roundtree’s continuing pursuit of greatness and improvement has made her an essential addition to an already strong ES Leadership staff.”

As she has only been in her position eight months, Roundtree was surprised to be selected.

Piedmont Agency on Aging to deliver Holiday Gift Bags
Every year at Christmas time, Piedmont Agency on Aging delivers colorful Holiday Gift Bags to all of their Meals on Wheels clients. This year they will be delivering approximately 475 gift bags and donations are needed to be able to fill those bags. Donations may be dropped off at any Piedmont Agency on Aging location in Greenwood, Abbeville, Laurens or Saluda.

D50 student arrested for strong arm robbery

School resource officers arrested a student at Greenwood High School after investigating a robbery that occurred in the restroom.

Tyre Alfonso Evans, 17 of 131 Russell Street was arrested and charged with strong arm robbery on Wednesday, Nov 29, 2017.

Mother and Daughter Compete at Nationals and Win

Mother and Daughter, Bridget and Gabriella White, attended the Miss Heart of the USA National Pageant in Orlando, Florida on November 17-18, 2017. They competed in their individual divisions, service titles, and in optionals that helped determine their overall scores. They competed in Interview, Self-Introduction, Fashionista, Patriotic Wear, Heart Wear, Scrapbook, Essay, Photogenic, and Beauty Wear.

Fatal shooting at Phoenix Place Apartments

Greenwood City Police responded to a shooting at Phoenix Place Apartments on Tuesday afternoon.  As they arrive they find two people were shot and were taken to Self Regional Healthcare.  After arriving, one of the victims died.

SCHP conducts special texting & driving enforcement during Thanksgiving travel

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety will be conducting a special enforcement effort to curb distracted driving this week as traffic volume increases for Thanksgiving travel. Community Relations Officers will also be distributing safety materials and talking with motorists about safe holiday travel at rest areas and welcome centers around the state on Wednesday.

The United Way of Greenwood and Abbeville Counties (UWGAC) is in need of Volunteers for the 2017 tax season with the VITA Program. VITA is an IRS-certified free tax program, run by local United Way and volunteers, in which thousands of people get their taxes done for free in Greenwood, Abbeville, McCormick and Saluda Counties.

Long-time drug dealer found guilty in his absence, faces mandatory 25-year prison sentence

Eighth Circuit Solicitor David M. Stumbo announced Thursday that a North Carolina man was convicted of trafficking cocaine, third or subsequent offense, after the man failed to appear for his court date.

Calvin Whitener, 43, of Kings Mountain, N.C., was found guilty by a Newbery County jury of trafficking cocaine, third and subsequent defense, following a two-day trial at the Newberry County Courthouse.

HospiceCare of the Piedmont’s Board of Directors are getting ready for the upcoming Santa Stroll and Festival of Trees.  HospiceCare of the Piedmont presents the 26th annual Festival of Trees, Christmas Cheer, December 2nd and 3rd at First Baptist Church.  The Santa Stroll is Saturday morning, December 2nd.

Greenwood Assoc of Realtors help fund home for Veteran
The Greenwood Association of Realtors presented Chad Charles, Director of the Greenwood Area Habitat for Humanity with a check for $907.70 on Wednesday, November 15.  

The funds donated have been designated to aid in the completion of a home for a disabled veteran in the Greenwood community. Construction of the home is set to begin in early 2018, as part of the Westside Neighborhood Revitalization Project.
