SCANA Corporation Chairman Kevin Marsh to speak at Lander Spring Commencement

Lander University will confer approximately 270 degrees during its spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 6, at 11 a.m. in Finis Horne Arena.

The commencement speaker will be Kevin Marsh, chairman and chief executive officer with SCANA Corporation, a $9-billion energy-based holding company that has brought power and fuel to homes in the Carolinas and Georgia for 170 years.

Breanna Butler, a secondary English education major from Bradley, won top honors in the “Connecting to Education” segment of this year’s Student Academic Symposium, one of nine sessions and panels in which Lander University students presented their research, art and other academic work before faculty members, fellow students and members of the community.

FAFSA Week Extended to Piedmont Tech County Campus Locations

Piedmont Technical College has extended FAFSA Week and expanded it to the college’s county campuses.

Due to security concerns, the IRS and the Department of Education now require all students and parents to enter their tax information by hand into their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition to FAFSA Week being held now through April 28, FASFA Days will be held at county campus locations.

Special Notice from Self Regional Healthcare

During today’s storm two power lines were downed beside Self Regional Medical Center. No injuries were reported, however the Montgomery Center for Family Medicine and the South Carolina Spine Center are currently without power. Appointments will need to be rescheduled.  

Phone and internet service is down at the Wound Healing Center and the Self Regional Imaging Center, but appointments are unaffected. 

CPW indicated that power might not be restored until 8:00 PM this evening. No other buildings on the hospital campus were affected. We apologize for the inconvenience, and ask for your patience while utilities are being restored.

Traffic stop ends with two arrested over prostitution

On Sunday night, Greenwood City Police officer pulled over a vehicle after leaving the Greenwood Motel without any lights on.  During the traffic stop, officers smelled a strong odor of what they believed to be marijuana.  Officers searched the driver, Willie Willie Lee Jones, 49 of 208 Holman Street, Greenwood but did not locate any drugs on him.

Greenwood man arrested for beating a child

On April 23, 2017 the Greenwood City Police meet with a family member concerning a child, 4-years-old that appeared to have bruises on him in multiple locations.

Police did observe severe redness and bruising on the child’s face, right thigh area, stomach and torso area as well.  The family member said they were called to come pick up the child after the mother’s boyfriend had beaten him over cutting his and his sister’s hair.

Piedmont Technical College is working to make it easier for students to attend college.

Greenwood man sexually assaults minor on playground

Greenwood City Police responded to a playground near New Haven Apartments after someone reported a man sexually assaulting their child.

The mother of the child told police that as she was watching kids play from her apartment, she notice a man assault her child.  She said the man came up and started roughhousing her son.  Then she notice her son telling the suspect to leave him alone.  As the mother approached the playground the suspect left.

Dating site relationship ends with violence & blackmail

A relationship that began through an online dating website leads to violence, drugs and blackmail and one arrested.

According to the police report, the victim met Walter Anthony Townsend, 36 on an online dating site called Plenty of Fish.  They began dating for about 5 weeks with Townsend staying at her residence from time to time.

On the walk of life, sometimes kids need a strong, caring hand.  The Eighth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office Community Juvenile Arbitration Program is looking for a few volunteers.  If you are at least 21 years of age, have no criminal record and possess a High School Diploma or equivalent then you are eligible to volunteer.
