Lander University Readying to Celebrate 50 Years of Men's Basketball

The Lander University Office of Alumni Affairs is urging alumni who played men’s basketball at the school to join them in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the sport at Lander. An on-court recognition of former players will be held at halftime of the Saturday, Jan. 20, matchup between Lander and USC Aiken at Horne Arena.

Over $10,000 in textbooks missing from District 50

A man was arrested for stealing books from District 50 schools.  Joseph Brian Yandle, 30 of 8 Park Circle, West Columbia SC was arrested and charged with grand larceny.

According to the report, Yandle had purchased books from District 50 previously without issues.  Just before the Christmas break, Yandel came to the school to purchase books that are no longer in use.  A school employee showed Yandle the inventory pointing out which books they could sell and which were not for sale.

Lander Group Collects Blankets for Dogs

Bre Butler, of Bradley, president of Lander University’s Animal Advocates Club, made a second donation of blankets to Greenwood Animal Shelter last week, helping the dogs there survive the recent frigid weather with no casualties.

Greenwood School Bus involved in an accident, no injuries

A Greenwood School District 50 bus was involved in an accident Friday around 4 p.m.  According to the district, two other vehicles collided near the intersection of Airport Road and Deadfall Road and ran into the bus.  Students and the driver on the bus were not harmed.  Local law enforcement and school officials were notified and are investigating the accident.

Greenwood School District 50 said they are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all of their students and employees.

Gov. Henry McMaster Authorizes S.C. National Guard to Deploy Resources for Winter Weather Recovery

Governor Henry McMaster today gave formal authorization to the South Carolina National Guard to place guardsmen on active duty to assist in the recovery of areas affected by the ongoing winter weather event. Specifically, the National Guard will be deploying resources to augment the South Carolina Highway Patrol's and South Carolina Department of Transportation's existing efforts along the Interstate 95 corridor and other affected areas.

Upstate SC to count homeless neighbors

GREENVILLE, SC, January 2, 2017 – Beginning on January 24 and continuing through January 31, the Upstate Continuum of Care (CoC) will conduct a census of individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness. Known as the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, this annual census is an important tool for understanding the present needs of our local homeless population and providing direction for the development of future services.

SC Festival of Flowers Seeking Historical Churches of Greenwood to Participate in Tour June 3

The SC Festival of Flowers is seeking 5 - 7 historical churches in Greenwood to participate in the church tour on Sunday, June 3 from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. The Churches of Greenwood tour will provide visitors the opportunity to see the beautiful sanctuaries and view the architecture and furnishings that each has to offer.

“For several years, the Festival featured church tours and we have decided to add this special tour back into the 2018 Festival schedule.  While visitors are in town viewing local gardens, we felt that this would be an added benefit to showcase our unique sanctuaries on Sunday afternoon,” said Curry Cook, Event Coordinator.

Enviva Holdings, LP Announces New Development Joint Venture and Acquisition of Wood Pellet Production Plant

BETHESDA, MD - Enviva Holdings, LP (“Enviva” or “we”) announced today that its development subsidiary, Enviva Development Holdings, LLC (“Enviva Development”), entered into a new joint venture, Enviva JV Development Company, LLC, with affiliates of The John Hancock Life Insurance Company (U.S.A.) (“John Hancock”) to acquire, develop and construct wood pellet production plants and deep-water marine terminals in the Southeastern United States.  The new joint venture will be managed by Enviva and supported by the Hancock Renewable Energy Group (“HREG”), a unit of the Hancock Natural Resource Group.  In addition, the new joint venture has agreed to acquire a wood pellet production plant in Greenwood, South Carolina (the “Greenwood plant”), subject to certain customary closing conditions.

Ware Shoals Police Chief arrested for discharging firearm

Greenwood City Police responded to a possible domestic incident that occurred at a home on Sylvan Road December 30, 2017.  During the investigation, officers learned that Terry Carpenter, 44 and Police Chief for the Town of Ware shoals allegedly produced a weapon and fired it in the backyard.

A warrant was obtained and Carpenter was placed under arrest for discharging a firearm within city limits.

Greenwood, SC - Police officers arrested one man believed to be the suspect in a stabbing incident. On the evening of Dec 23, 2017, officers were dispatched to a house on Edgefield Street where someone had allegedly been robbed.

Greenwood, SC – Greenwood Metropolitan District recently brought supplies to HospiceCare of the Piedmont’s (HCP) Hospice House.  Greenwood Metropolitan has a yearly Charitable Giving Drive from October – December.  This year they collected needed items for HCP.
