Lander and School District 50 form Montessori education partnership

Lander University and Greenwood School District 50 have agreed to partner in establishing and operating a Montessori Early Childhood laboratory school at Lakeview Elementary School in Greenwood. Both sides said the agreement will provide exemplary educational opportunities for children and an enhanced environment for Lander to deliver its Montessori Teacher Education program.

Mystery Dinner successfully supports Meg's House
The Greenwood Chapter of Business and Professional Woman would like to thank everyone who came out and supported our Mystery Dinner Theater fundraiser for Meg's House Women’s Shelter. The evening was filled with Hollywood glamour. Attendees enjoyed a special performance called "Suspect Hollywood" featuring volunteer performers from the community.

Walmart VIP Night Sets Stage for Grand Opening

Walmart held a special pre-opening event on Monday, June 29, 2015 at their new location on Bypass 25 NE in Greenwood. During the event, Walmart presented several checks to support local organizations such as The Salvation Army, Beyond Abuse, Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, and Meg’s House.  Greenwood Mayor, Welborn Adams, was on hand to welcome Walmart to the new location and to the 300 jobs created for local residents.

Musicians support Meg's House; aim to end domestic violence

Musical talents filled the Sundance Studio Friday night all in hopes to raise awareness on domestic violence and to benefit Meg’s House.  The night started off with a strong kick from the band Kindlin singing some of the best southern rock songs.  Then Ryan Daniel entertained the sold out crowd and at one moment during the performance, slowed it down for the eye watering “Lies & Bruises” song.

IG at John de la Howe Board meeting; new chair named

McCORMICK — Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the John de la Howe School Board of Trustees, State Inspector General Patrick Maley said it is important for South Carolina to treat troubled teens before they get into deeper trouble.

Maley told the trustees that state leaders are starting to understand the importance of investing in behavioral health problems early.

“Doing so prevents greater costs downstream, and the return on your initial investment is tenfold,” Maley said.

Lander offers SAT preparation course for high school students

Lander University will offer a special course beginning July 17 and continuing through August 7 for high school students who plan to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test scheduled for next fall.

The program is called SAT PRO. It will be taught on the Lander campus by Dr. Lillian Craton, associate professor of English and director of Lander’s Honors College, who will be the reading and writing instructor, and Gina Dunn, chair of Lander’s Department of Mathematics and Computing, who will teach the mathematics section.

Game Changer Scholarship Established at Piedmont Tech

Susan Thompson is a legend in Greenwood County for her accomplishments at Greenwood High School, where she coached the girls’ basketball team to 299 wins, eight region crowns and two upper state titles. And now a scholarship has been established in her honor at Piedmont Technical College that aims to continue her legacy.
