Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont's Spring Volunteer Training

Interested in becoming a volunteer?  Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont is seeking volunteers.

Volunteers are needed in many areas:  patient sitting, working in the Hospice House, running errands, selling and sorting donations, repair work, clerical, fundraising and many other exciting opportunities that provide services to patients and families of the terminally ill. Becoming a hospice volunteer is similar to helping a neighbor in need.

Lander Hosts Panel Discussion on current state of journalism

In some ways, reporting the news is the same as it has always been. In other ways, it’s quite different. Both sides of the news industry were in evidence during a panel discussion last week at Lander University.

“The biggest change for me is in my right hand,” said Andy Shain, holding up his cellphone. “We’re all getting the news digitally,” said Shain, Columbia Bureau chief for The (Charleston) Post and Courier.

“Everybody’s a publisher now,” said Andy Brack, publisher of the South Carolina Statehouse Report, referring to the ease with which information of every kind can now be posted.

Wisewood Apartment Shooting Suspect Arrested

The suspect that Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office was searching for in connection to the shooting at Wisewood Apartments has been arrested.

Reed, Darrell Xavier, 11/17/98 of 216 New Market Street, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and poss of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Mary Margaret Jackson Appointed to Burton Center Board

Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Mary Margaret Jackson to serve on the Burton Center Board for Disabilities and Special Needs.    Jackson, who will represent Greenwood County, is Chief Quality Risk Officer for the Abbeville Area Medical Center. She is a graduate of Lander University and has had extensive management and leadership training throughout her career.  Jackson is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ).

Lander University to Host Greenwood City Council Meeting

The city council will hold its regular meeting for the month of February on the campus of Lander University.

The meeting will take place on Monday, February 25, at 5:30 p.m. in room 300 of the Carnell Learning Center. In addition to council’s regular business matters, City Manager Julie Wilkie—a graduate of Lander’s political science program—and members of council have also agreed to hold a question-and-answer session with Lander students upon adjournment.

Six arrested on drug charges

Greenwood County Sheriff Office visited a home at 111 Lawton Street in Greenwood to perform a welfare check because of possible drug activity.  They were also looking for someone who earlier was treated for a drug overdose and left the hospital on their own.

Man arrested after holding gun to woman's head

A Greenwood man was arrested after a victim told police that she was assaulted and threatened with a pistol to her head.

Alexander Leon McBride, 30 of 570 Brown, Greenwood SC was arrested and charged with 1st degree domestic violence and poss of a weapon during commission of a crime.

According to the police report, McBride and the victim began arguing after the victim refused to give over keys to a vehicle when McBride was intoxicated.

Ninety Six man arrested for attempted murder

A Ninety Six man was arrested in connection to a stabbing that happen at a bar in Greenwood.

Jeremy Travio Saxon, 32 of 231 West Main Street, Ninety Six, SC was arrested by Greenwood City Police for attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

The 52nd annual SC Festival of Flowers is seeking exquisite handmade goods from artists and crafters to showcase in this summer’s Juried Arts & Craft Show.  The Festival features original work from all over the Southeast and festival goers love to see the creative process in action. Suspect identified in Greenwood County robbery/shooting that injured one

The Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office reports that Investigators have obtained warrants in connection with the shooting investigation which occurred yesterday. The robbery/shooting occurred on February 12th, 2019 at approximately 6:32 pm at the Wisewood Apartments located at 235 Florida Avenue in Greenwood County.

Donors Are Urged to Donate As Flu Season Impacts Donations

Due to widespread flu and illness, The Blood Connection is experiencing low donor turnout and this is affecting blood inventory and the ability to provide blood products to our local hospitals.

TBC is urging healthy donors--first time donors and regular donors--to help fill in during this time of shortages. All blood types are needed, especially O negative because it can be transfused to almost any patient in need. O negative is recognized as the universal type; although only 7% of the population has it.

One shot during robbery at Wisewood Apartments

Greenwood County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a robbery and possible shooting yesterday afternoon at Wisewood Apartments located on Florida Ave.

According to GCSO the victims claimed two men approached them in the parking lot and attempted to rob them.  As the robbers find the victims had nothing to steal, they began to walk away from them. But one suspect turned back around and fired one shot striking one of the victims in the stomach.

Deputies are still searching for the suspects but the only description the victims could provide was the two were wearing hoodies.

HOSPICE and Palliative Care of the Piedmont to host Spring Grief Series

Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont is hosting four educational workshops for people who have experienced a significant loss in their lives or for those who wish to learn more about the grief process.  The workshops will offer an in-depth look at how loss and grief affect us emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

The workshop series will be held on Tuesdays, beginning March 5th to March 26th, 2019 from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Community Center, Hospice Store located at 217 North Creek Blvd, Greenwood.   If you have experienced a loss and/or desire information regarding grief, you are invited to attend. Greenwood Alumnae Chapter Host 4th Red Shoe Luncheon

The Greenwood Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will host their 4th Red Shoe Luncheon on March 2, 2019.  The event will be held at 1pm at the Morris Chapel Baptist Church’s Family Life Center located at 530 Baptist Ave., Greenwood SC.

The event is held annually to raise funds for scholarships the Chapter presents to students from their service area of Greenwood, Abbeville, and McCormick counties.

Lander University Crowns Homecoming 2019 King and Queen

Senior mass communications major Santos Pagán, of North Augusta, and senior political science major Courtney Cannon, of Mauldin, were named Lander University’s Homecoming King and Queen on Saturday, February 9. The pair were crowned during the halftimes of the men’s and women’s basketball games in Finis Horne Arena on the Lander campus.

Leath Project for the Greenwood Food Bank

Leath SCCA Chapter collects food and have it picked up by the Greenwood Food Bank for the monthly project in January.   Leath staff brought in requested food supplies all month to be given to the Food Bank. The mission of the Greenwood Food Bank is to reduce hunger through community cooperation, and to effectively distribute food.

Seven students take top honors at annual art exhibit

More than 100 art patrons showed up on Feb. 7 to see three seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore win top honors at Lander University’s annual Juried Student Exhibition.

The public exhibit, run by the College of Arts & Humanities since the mid-1970s, featured more than 40 art pieces in the Monsanto Art Gallery from all levels of arts students.

Sheriff investigating shooting incident on Old Laurens Road
On Friday, February 8th, 2019 at approximately 7:20 am GCSO Deputies responded to a 911 call on Old Laurens Road near Kelli Drive in reference to multiple gunshots being fired at a neighbor’s residence.

Once GCSO Deputies arrived in the area they located evidence that a shooting had occurred at 2005 Old Laurens Road. Deputies recovered evidence to include not limited to bullet casings from the scene which are being processed at this time.

Husband and wife arrested for domestic violence

On Feb 6, 2019 Greenwood County Sheriff Deputies responded to 126 Partridge Dive for a domestic violence incident.

After investigating the incident, both the husband and wife were arrested for domestic violence.  Joshua Andrew Prather 42 and Jodi Sullivan Prather 38 both of 126 Partridge Road, Greenwood SC were arrested for 2nd degree domestic violence.

According to the police report, Deputies could not determine which of the two were the aggressor in the domestic violence so both were arrested.

Overturned vehicle on Hwy 72

A collision on Hwy 72/221 at the intersection of Kateway has one vehicle overturned blocking traffic.  The accident was reported at 11:59. SCHP is reporting that there were injuries but details are limited at this time.

You may want to avoid this area as there will be traffic delays until the vehicles can be removed.
