Lander University Names Coach for Equestrian Team

Lander University has announced the appointment of Amy Kaplan as the next coach of the university’s equestrian team. A native of Pickens, Kaplan has been riding horses since the age of 10, bringing a wealth of equine experience as she prepares to lead the Lander team.

Lander softball announces Taylor Braselton as new assistant coach

Lander head softball coach Glen Crawford announced on Tuesday that former Reinhardt University standout Taylor Braselton has been named the new assistant coach for the Bearcat softball program. Braselton played for Crawford at Reinhardt from 2014-15.

Lander men's cross country picked 8th in PBC preseason poll

The Lander University men's cross country team has been picked to finish eighth in a preseason poll of Peach Belt Conference coaches, released today by league officials.

The Bearcats, who begin their first season of competition since 1999, received two sixth-place votes and five seventh-place votes from the other seven Peach Belt Conference coaches. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams.

Lander selected 10th in Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

The Lander University women's cross country team was selected to finish 10th in the Peach Belt Conference women's cross country preseason poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches.

The Bearcats are competing for the first time since 2008, when Lander finished seventh at the PBC Championship. Lander won the first three conference titles in league history, claiming the PBC championship from 1991-93.

The Bearcats have four regular-season meets. The team opens the season at the Eye Opener Invitational on Sept. 1.

Tekker, Hash named to Lander baseball coaching staff

Lander University head baseball coach Jason Burke announced the addition of Cameron Tekker and Brett Hash to the baseball coaching staff on Saturday. Tekker will serve as a student assistant coach and work with pitchers, while Hash will be a volunteer assistant coach and assist with hitters and infielders, as well as baserunning.

Lander women's basketball faces one of nation's toughest schedules

Lander women's basketball head coach Kevin Pederson announced today his team's 2017-18 schedule, which features seven games against teams that participated in the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The Bearcats will play each of the top-four seeds from last season's Southeast Regional.

Lander University is pleased to announce the hiring of Taunita Stephenson for the position of Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success. Stephenson comes to Lander after stints with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), Delaware State University and Grinnell College.

Lander 2017-18 men's basketball schedule released

The Lander men's basketball team will play seven of its 28 regular-season games against teams that participated in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, including a pair of contests against conference foes UNC Pembroke, Columbus State and Augusta with a non-conference matchup against Wingate.

"Every year I feel like our schedule challenges us and our program to become the best possible team we are capable of becoming," said head coach Steve Roberts. "You want to have a competitive non-conference games to help prepare you for a formidable conference schedule. We feel like this season's schedule will test us early and often all the way until the end."

Lander Bearcats announce new website

The Lander University Athletic Department, in partnership with PrestoSports, unveiled a new and improved, the official Lander Athletics website, at noon on August 1st.  

"We are incredibly excited to complete the redesign and relaunch of," said Athletics Director Brian Reese, "and we're grateful to PrestoSports for continuing to power the home of Lander Athletics. Our staff and the folks at Presto have done a wonderful job putting this new site together for our fan base."

Team Carolina-DeMarini 11U played in the 12U division of the USSSA Global World Series held at Tyger River in Spartanburg, SC on the weekend of July 27, 2017. With a record of 6-2 over four days to clinch the championship title.

Seven set to join Lander volleyball this fall
Lander volleyball head coach Ashley White announced seven newcomers to the Bearcat program on Thursday who will attempt to help Lander return to the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season.

"We have five freshmen and two junior college players," said White, who begins her sixth season with the Bearcats this fall. "We are really looking forward to this group of seven helping us continue to take Lander volleyball in the right direction. These seven are going to be a great addition to our Bearcat family."

Lander tennis teams earn ITA academic honors

The Lander men's and women's tennis programs were honored by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their academic achievements during the 2016-17 academic year on Wednesday.

 Both were selected as ITA All-Academic Teams, while the Bearcats led the Peach Belt Conference with 13 ITA Scholar-Athletes.

PGA Junior League Golf New to Greenwood

PGA Junior League Golf has been brought back to Greenwood, where PGA Professional Tommy Pendley captains an impressive four teams made up of 39 boys and girls at The Links at Stoney Point. This year, a record of more than 40,000 boys and girls (as of June 2017) are participating in PGA Junior League Golf, surpassing the 36,000 participants across 2,900 teams in 2016.

Alex Petock hired as Lander assistant volleyball coach

Lander University head volleyball coach Ashley Stathas announced on Thursday the hiring of Alex Petock as an assistant coach for the Bearcat volleyball program. Petock spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Highland Community College in Kansas.

"We are very excited to have Alex join our coaching staff," said Stathas. "She has a strong background in the setting position and we are looking forward to her working with our setters. Alex has a lot of energy and passion for coaching and she is going to be a great addition to our Bearcat family."

Lander baseball player Carson Joneswas selected to the 2017 Coastal Plain League Select Team, the league announced today.

The team will face the USA Collegiate National Team on Monday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Lander's Lofts receives Premier Developmental League honor

Lander men's soccer player Sam Lofts was named one of the top players in the Premier Developmental League for the week of June 14-20, the league announced today.

Lofts, a rising senior from Swindon, England, was tabbed as an honorable mention for the league's weekly awards. The Bearcat striker netted two goals on his first two shots of the season on Saturday for Tormenta FC in a 4-0 victory over SC United Bantams. The forward is the first Tormenta player to record multiple goals in a match this season. 

The Bearcats' leading scorer last fall, Lofts tallied 12 goals and four assists for a team-high 28 points.

Lander's single season home run king begins his 2017 campaign on Monday night with the Batavia Muckdogs in the New York-Penn League. Daly spent last season in the Gulf Coast League, where he tallied 20 hits and 14 RBI.

The professional baseball season is under way for three former Bearcats. Lander has three players in Class A, while two others await assignment for the 2017 season. 

Colby Lusignan -- 1B, Greensboro Grasshoppers (A - Miami Marlins) 
Season: 53 G, 27 R, 51 H, 13 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 34 RBI, 1 SB, .251 AVG
Lusignan's walkoff single on Thursday against Hagerstown sparked a four-game hitting streak for the Grasshopper first baseman. Greensboro's leading RBI producer is batting .300 over his last 10 games.

The professional baseball season is under way for three former Bearcats. Lander has three players in Class A, while two others await assignment for the 2017 season. 

Colby Lusignan -- 1B, Greensboro Grasshoppers (A - Miami Marlins) 
Season: 48 G, 24 R, 45 H, 11 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 1 SB, .246 AVG
Lusignan is in his first season in Greensboro after splitting time between the New York-Penn League and the Gulf Coast League last year. He leads the Grasshoppers with 30 RBI and has recorded 10 hits in his last seven games.

Lander volleyball reveals 2017 schedule featuring 27 matches

The Lander volleyball program has announced its 2017 schedule, featuring 11 home matches and six matches against NCAA Tournament participants from last year. The campaign marks the 20th season of Bearcat volleyball.

"I am really looking forward to the opportunities that this year's schedule presents," said Lander head coach Ashley Stathas. "We have several off weekends that I think will offer our bodies some much needed rest. We are also playing in the PBC/SAC Crossover again this year, which will provide us with some great region competition."
