Lander's Bryan, Cowdroy collect PBC weekly honors

Richard Bryan and Dean Cowdroy were named Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced today. 

Bryan, a sophomore from Enfield, England, led a Bearcat defense that allowed just one goal in two matches this week as Lander clinched the regular season PBC title. The sophomore connected with Jamie North and Conor Felstead for a pair of assists in Lander's 9-0 win over UNC Pembroke. He has tallied more assists than any other defender in the Peach Belt this season and ranks seventh in the league with five assists. He has also helped Lander record a PBC-best six shutouts and league-leading 1.05 team GAA.

Two NSHS students win Wendy's High School Heisman

There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example in the classroom, on the field and within the community. Today, Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes Ginger Cannon and Tay Hentz from Ninety Six High School and their dedication to never cutting corners by naming them School Winners.

Cambridge Academy Girl's Golf finish sixth in state tourn

The Cambridge Academy girl’s golf team traveled to Orangeburg on October 18th to compete in the SCISA State golf tournament.  The team finished in 6th place overall.  The Orangeburg Country Club hosted teams from 14 different schools after the original tournament was postponed due to hurricane Matthew.

WS Girl's Golf qualifies for Upper State
On Monday, October 17, 2016 the Ware Shoals girl’s golf team competed at the 1A-3A Upper State Qualifier.  To qualify for state the team had to score 425 or lower.  Ware Shoals tied for fifth place and will compete Monday and Tuesday next week for the best showing at state.

Lander's Cowdroy, Bryan earn Peach Belt Conference honors

Dean Cowdroy and Richard Bryanwere honored by the Peach Belt Conference as Goalkeeper of the Week and Defender of the Week, the league office announced today. 

Cowdroy, a freshman from Canberra, Australia, earned his fourth weekly honor this season and second in a row after registering his third straight shutout in a 5-0 win over Mars Hill, then making two saves in a come-from-behind win over Young Harris. The freshman allowed only two goals on the week for a 0.92 GAA. Against Young Harris, he kept the Mountain Lions off the board for the final 49 minutes of play, including 17 OT minutes, in the 3-2 win that moved the Bearcats to 6-0 in league play.

Coaches for Emerald High School, Greenwood High School and Palmetto Christian Academy are proud to announce the 2016 All County Swim Team.  Coaches agreed upon the top 12 Swimmers  - 6 boys and 6 girls - by their performance in the 2016 All County Swim Meet.

Lander's Skelton, Cowdroy earn PBC weekly honors

Jordan Skelton and Dean Cowdroy were named Peach Belt Conference Defender and Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced today. 

Skelton, a sophomore from Newcastle, England, led a Bearcat defense that posted shutout wins over North Georgia and USC Aiken last week. The Bearcat captain helped the Lander defense hold North Georgia to 12 total shots in a 2-0 win, followed by a win at USC Aiken where the Pacers only got eight shots, four on goal. In that contest, Skelton scored his first career goal as he put home a corner kick for the first, and ultimately game-winning, goal. Lander leads the PBC with four shutouts on the year.

Lander men and women's basketball earn preseason honors

The Lander basketball men's and women's basketball teams will both enter the season ranked in the top-20 of the Division II Bulletin Preseason National Rankings. The men are ranked No. 15, while the women enter the season ranked No. 17.

Lander golf finishes second at UNG Fall Invitational

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The 23rd-ranked Lander men's golf team finished in second place of 12 teams Tuesday at the two-day, three-round North Georgia Fall Invitational hosted by the University of North Georgia at the par-72, 6,945-yard Achasta Golf Club.

Lander's Michal Pospisil selected as PBC Golfer of the Week
Lander's Michal Pospisil, a senior from Unhost, Czech Republic, was named the Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week it was announced by the league office today.
Pospisil won the AFLAC/Cougar Invitational after a marathon playoff that stretched nine holes after the 54 holes of the first three rounds was complete.

Piedmont Technical College President Announces Retirement

Dr. Ray Brooks, president of Piedmont Technical College, has announced plans to retire on June 30, 2017, at the end of the current academic year.

Brooks made his plans official in a meeting with the college's Area Commission on Tuesday evening. He has led the institution since March 2008.

George Piersol, PTC Area Commission Chair said, "Dr. Brooks' focus on creating the right environment for student success has had a huge impact on Piedmont Technical College."

"The Commission is appreciative for his experienced leadership over the last eight years, and we are fully supportive of the important initiatives begun during his tenure," he said.

D50 Purchases New Band Uniforms from Sale of Property Proceeds

Last year at a Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business David Loadholt announced that the district would use the land sale of the property at 133 Merrywood Drive to enhance the related arts programs in the district.

One of the items that the district used the proceeds for was new band uniforms for Emerald and Greenwood High School. The uniforms will be worn during Friday night football games and band competitions.

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy girls golf team. They traveled to Greer and topped Oakwood Prep and Dorman on Monday. Grace Clegg shot lowest overall score leading her team to victory.

Four college fishing teams from Lander University are hauling their boats across the state line and traveling to Chickamauga Lake, Tennessee in hopes of reeling in prize money to support their student organization.

Adult USTA Tennis tournament in Greenwood coming in November

Good news for Greenwood tennis enthusiasts, a new USTA (United States Tennis Association) sanctioned tournament event will be held at The Links at Stony Point on Lake Greenwood this November.  Tournament Director and Stony Point tennis pro, Lori Flick announced the Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament will take place over Veteran’s Day weekend this year, Nov 11-13.

Lander's Cowdroy, Delhommelle earn PBC weekly honors

Dean Cowdroy and Hugo Delhommelle were named Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper and Player of the Week, the league office announced today. 

Cowdroy, a freshman from Canberra, Australia, helped lead Lander to a 3-1 win in its PBC opener on Saturday night. The freshman held Clayton State, a team that scored three goals in its previous match, scoreless in the first half as Lander built a 3-0 lead.

Lander men's basketball releases 2016-17 schedule

GREENWOOD – Lander head men's basketball coach Steve Roberts announced on Thursday his team's schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign, Robert's second season in Greenwood. The slate features 28 games, with 16 home contests, including one exhibition. Highlighting the non-conference portion of the schedule is the Bearcats' trip to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks, as well as Lander's hosting the Bearcat Classic on Nov. 11-12 and the Finis Horne Holiday Classic on Nov. 25-26. The Bearcats will face four teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago, including two conference foes that participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Erskine's Mel Foster connected on a header just 79 seconds into the first overtime to lead the Flying Fleet past Lander, 2-1, in a non-conference match at Huggins Field on Wednesday night.

Lander's Dotson named to Queens Invitational All-Tournament team
Senior right side hitter Halle Dotson was named to the Queens Invitational All-Tournament team, the school announced Tuesday. 

Dotson lead Lander to a perfect 4-0 mark in the first weekend of the season. The Titusville, Fla., native leads the Peach Belt in kills per set (4.40) and total attacks (172), and is currently second in the conference in kills (66), points (73.0) and points per set (4.9).

The tournament was played at Hickory Knob State Park. Proceeds assist students attending John de la Howe School in McCormick.

Last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama fast pitch softball players from across the country competed against each other to try to earn their spot and make their mark among the most elite of girls fast pitch softballs’ competitions. The top travel-ball teams in the county sent a few of their top players to compete.

Lander men's soccer sets sights on new heights in 2016

The Lander men's soccer team entered the 2015 season with plenty of unknowns. The 2014 team finished with a 6-6-2 record and missed the conference tournament in legendary head coach Van Taylor's final season on the sideline.

However, under the direction of first-year head coach Lee Squires, the 2015 squad finished with a 14-3-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Now, as the 2016 season draws near, the Bearcats are focused on taking the next step.
