Six Lander baseball players named to Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team

The Lander baseball team placed six players on the Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic team, the PBC office announced today.

Bailey Connell, Mike Fitschen, Ryan Flores, Robbie Hoyt, Carson Jones and Colton Yeagerearned all-academic honors for the Bearcats. 

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.

Carolina-Demarini 12U takes first place in USSSA tournament

Team Carolina-Demarini 12U wins 13U USSSA Baseball tournament held in Greenville, SC.  The 12U team played up in age vs 13U teams and finished 1st out of 5 teams winning 9-1 in the championship game.

Lander's Richards named semifinalist for Jack Nicklaus Award

Lander's Conor Richards has been named a semifinalist for the 2018 Division II Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award presented by Barbasol. Division II finalists for the award will be named May 17. Nicklaus Award recipients will be announced May 31 with the honor presented by Jack Nicklaus at a ceremony during the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Grimes, Ferguson named to All-Peach Belt Conference softball team

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Sophomore Sydney Grimes and senior McKenzi Ferguson were tabbed as All-Peach Belt Conference selection it was announced Thursday night at the annual awards banquet at the University of North Georgia. Grimes was named first-team All-PBC, while Ferguson was named second-team all-conference.

"The Drop" raises over $70,000 for Lander Athletics

Lander Athletics held its inaugural Emerald Ink & Stitches "The Drop" on Saturday night at Dolny Stadium. Over 300 Lander supporters were on hand to enjoy great food and entertainment from Greenwood's own "Bad Weather States." 

"The Drop" raised over $70,000 that will directly benefit Bearcat student-athletes and sports programs. Click here for Saturday's photo gallery.

Game Summary:  The River Bandits ran off with the lead late in the game in a 13-8 victory over the River Dogs on Tuesday. The River Bandits got things moving in the first inning. Eli Swancey drove in one when he doubled.

Home Team - Score:  Young Guns – 11

Away Team - Score:   Fireflies – 12


Game Summary:  In the game of the night, the Young Guns and Fireflies traded blows back and forth, going into extra innings to decide a victor.  The Fireflies took an early 6-2 lead.  However, in the 4th inning, the Young Guns loaded up the bases, and got a key hit from Cooper Chrisley, who put a well-placed hit into right field resulting in a grand slam to tie the game at 6-6.

Lander's Schulz, Yodice earn Peach Belt Conference All-Academic honors

The Lander women's tennis team placed Isabella Schulz and Caroline Yodice on the Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team, the league office announced on Tuesday. 

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must: 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor, 2) achieve a 3.3 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and 3) have completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution.

Lander Bass Fishing anticipating its best year

The Lander Bass Fishing program set a high bar in 2017 by qualifying a team in the College Series National Championship. But thanks to senior Ben Stone and junior Greyson Williams, the team could be in for its biggest year yet.

Stone and Williams placed second in the Bassmaster College Classic, held March 18 at Lake Keowee, S.C. The fishing duo caught fish weighing 12 lbs., 3 ounces – less than a pound behind tournament winner Kansas State. Stone was one of two Lander fishermen to qualify for the 2017 nationals.

Game Summary:  The Fireflies and Rockets battled it out in want had to be a candidate for game of the night.  The Rockets quickly showed they were there to win after putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning off of a 2-run double by Coby Scott, scoring Tyler Mapes and Luke Mathis.

Lander falls prey to big inning in 14-10 loss to Anderson

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team could not overcome a 10-run fifth inning by Anderson on Tuesday night as the Trojans posted a 14-10 win at Dolny Stadium.

Lander (12-25) fell behind 2-0 on a home run in the top of the first before Alex Conaway's first home run of the season cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning. The Trojans (16-23) answered with another two-run blast in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, but Lander responded as Zack Moore scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2. Justin Wager then singled into right field to plate Conner Davis and Colton Yeager's two-run single put the Bearcats ahead 5-4 entering the fifth inning.

The Lander University cheerleading team notched an eighth-place finish in the Intermediate Division II competition at the 2018 National Cheer Association and National Dance Association National Championships this past weekend.

The Lander softball team earned a Peach Belt Conference split with one of the league's top teams on Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats took game one over Georgia College, 6-3, before falling 10-3 in game two at Doug Spears Field.

Toros Soccer Club helps Springfield Elementary students

Throughout February and March, the Lakelands Toros Soccer Club operated a free after school soccer program at Springfield Elementary School to give free coaching to students after school. During the course of this program, 120 students spanning from kindergarten to fifth grade participated in the hour-long program on Wednesday afternoons.

Home Team - Score:  River Dogs – 2

Away Team - Score:   Flying Squirrels – 8


Game Summary:  The Flying Squirrels had the pitching working all game with Brycen Moore pitching four innings with 7 strikeouts, and 1 run allowed. Finn Howard closed it out with back to back strike outs in the bottom of the fifth.  The River Dogs started to make a run in the bottom of the 5th, but were stopped short when Jameson Pate made a diving stop at 1st base to prevent the runners on base from scoring.

Lander rally comes up just short in 9-8 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne

The Lander baseball team out-hit Lenoir-Rhyne 13-7, but could not overcome a four-run eighth inning by the Bears as Lander fell 9-8 in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium on Tuesday night. 

Lander (12-21) dropped its first home midweek game of the season, while the Bears (23-14) moved ahead in the all-time series, 9-8.

Away Team - Score:   Rockets – 3


Game Summary:    Both teams started the game with one run a piece in the first inning.  Scoring was limited until the Fireflies struck in the bottom of the 3rd inning, scoring 3 runs behind the leadoff hit from Bentley Minick.  The Rockets answered back in the top of the 4thbehind one of Coby Scott’s two home runs of the day.  However, the Fireflies proved too much for the day putting 2 more runs up by Michael Davis’ first home run of the year and an RBI single from Connor Linsenbigler.

Lander falls to Erskine in rivalry doubleheader

GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team managed just five hits and two runs on Wednesday night as the Bearcats fell to Erskine in a pair of contests at Doug Spears Field. 

The Bearcats (19-13) dropped the non-conference doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 5-1.

No. 19 Lander in seventh place after two rounds at Bearcat Classic

GREENWOOD – The No. 19-ranked Lander men's golf team sits in 7th place after two rounds at the 9th annual Bearcat Classic at the par-72, 6,800-yard Greenwood Country Club. The tournament will conclude with the third and final found on Tuesday.

Lander's Jenkins named Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week

Lander baseball's Kyle Jenkins has been named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week following his efforts this past week in helping Lander go 4-0 with a midweek win over Erskine and a PBC sweep of Francis Marion.

On the week, the Summerville, S.C., native went 5-for-12 from the plate (.417) with a double, a triple, four runs scored and three RBI. 
Jenkins went 1-for-3 with an RBI single in Lander's win over Erskine on Wednesday and went 2-for-5 with a triple, a career-high two RBI and two runs scored in a 14-6 win over Francis Marion on Friday.
The freshman roped a double in the bottom of the 10th in a 3-3 game on Saturday and came around to score the winning run, giving Lander its first series win of the season.

Game Summary: Braves jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and scored 2 in the third. The Rockets battled back with 5 runs, but wasn’t enough to catch the Braves. Tight contest tonight, both teams played well.

Local students compete in SC DNR Shooting Competition

The Rocky Knoll Youth Shooter teams recently competed in several South Carolina DNR state shooting competitions at the Palmetto Shooting Complex in Edgefield, SC.  The teams are coached by Jeff and Lynn Montjoy and Jim Tollison.

Lander's Squires tabbed as head coach of NPSL's Greenville FC

Greenville FC, a local semi-professional soccer team, announced Tuesday that Lander men's soccer head coach Lee Squires will serve as its head coach during the team's inaugural season.

Greenville FC plays in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), which is in the fourth division of the U.S. soccer pyramid, according to the organization's web site. The club begins its season on May 4 and will play its home matches at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium on the campus of Furman University.

Matty Evans hired as Lander assistant men's soccer coach

Lander men's soccer head coach Lee Squires announced on Monday the addition of Matty Evans as an assistant coach with the Bearcats. Evans comes to Lander after serving as an assistant coach at West Chester during the 2017 season.
