Piedmont Technical College President Announces Retirement

Dr. Ray Brooks, president of Piedmont Technical College, has announced plans to retire on June 30, 2017, at the end of the current academic year.

Brooks made his plans official in a meeting with the college's Area Commission on Tuesday evening. He has led the institution since March 2008.

George Piersol, PTC Area Commission Chair said, "Dr. Brooks' focus on creating the right environment for student success has had a huge impact on Piedmont Technical College."

"The Commission is appreciative for his experienced leadership over the last eight years, and we are fully supportive of the important initiatives begun during his tenure," he said.

D50 Purchases New Band Uniforms from Sale of Property Proceeds

Last year at a Greenwood School District 50 Board of Trustees meeting, Assistant Superintendent for Business David Loadholt announced that the district would use the land sale of the property at 133 Merrywood Drive to enhance the related arts programs in the district.

One of the items that the district used the proceeds for was new band uniforms for Emerald and Greenwood High School. The uniforms will be worn during Friday night football games and band competitions.

Cambridge Academy Girls Golf wins

Congratulations to the Cambridge Academy girls golf team. They traveled to Greer and topped Oakwood Prep and Dorman on Monday. Grace Clegg shot lowest overall score leading her team to victory.

Lander Fishing Teams to Compete

Four college fishing teams from Lander University are hauling their boats across the state line and traveling to Chickamauga Lake, Tennessee in hopes of reeling in prize money to support their student organization.

Adult USTA Tennis tournament in Greenwood coming in November

Good news for Greenwood tennis enthusiasts, a new USTA (United States Tennis Association) sanctioned tournament event will be held at The Links at Stony Point on Lake Greenwood this November.  Tournament Director and Stony Point tennis pro, Lori Flick announced the Brian O’Reilly Memorial Veteran’s Day Tennis tournament will take place over Veteran’s Day weekend this year, Nov 11-13.

Lander's Cowdroy, Delhommelle earn PBC weekly honors

Dean Cowdroy and Hugo Delhommelle were named Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper and Player of the Week, the league office announced today. 

Cowdroy, a freshman from Canberra, Australia, helped lead Lander to a 3-1 win in its PBC opener on Saturday night. The freshman held Clayton State, a team that scored three goals in its previous match, scoreless in the first half as Lander built a 3-0 lead.

Lander men's basketball releases 2016-17 schedule

GREENWOOD – Lander head men's basketball coach Steve Roberts announced on Thursday his team's schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 campaign, Robert's second season in Greenwood. The slate features 28 games, with 16 home contests, including one exhibition. Highlighting the non-conference portion of the schedule is the Bearcats' trip to Columbia to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks, as well as Lander's hosting the Bearcat Classic on Nov. 11-12 and the Finis Horne Holiday Classic on Nov. 25-26. The Bearcats will face four teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago, including two conference foes that participated in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Renee Horton, a college and club soccer coaching veteran of nearly 15 years, has been named assistant coach for the women's soccer program at Lander, head coach Chris Ayer announced.

Lander women's soccer drops overtime decision to Erskine

Erskine's Mel Foster connected on a header just 79 seconds into the first overtime to lead the Flying Fleet past Lander, 2-1, in a non-conference match at Huggins Field on Wednesday night.

Maguire, Honeycutt named Lander assistant baseball coaches
J.T. Maguire and Zach Honeycutt, who coached together last season in the Coastal Plains League, have been named assistant coaches at Lander, head coach Jason Burke announced Tuesday.

Lander's Dotson named to Queens Invitational All-Tournament team
Senior right side hitter Halle Dotson was named to the Queens Invitational All-Tournament team, the school announced Tuesday. 

Dotson lead Lander to a perfect 4-0 mark in the first weekend of the season. The Titusville, Fla., native leads the Peach Belt in kills per set (4.40) and total attacks (172), and is currently second in the conference in kills (66), points (73.0) and points per set (4.9).

Finishing first in the recent John de la Howe School Alumni Golf Tournament with the low score of 62 was this foursome comprised of, from left: Josh Baughman, Steve Sutherland, Dusty New and Doug New. The tournament was played at Hickory Knob State Park. Proceeds assist students attending John de la Howe School in McCormick.

Lauralee Scott named to All American Team - Class of 2021

Last weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama fast pitch softball players from across the country competed against each other to try to earn their spot and make their mark among the most elite of girls fast pitch softballs’ competitions. The top travel-ball teams in the county sent a few of their top players to compete.

Lander men's soccer sets sights on new heights in 2016

The Lander men's soccer team entered the 2015 season with plenty of unknowns. The 2014 team finished with a 6-6-2 record and missed the conference tournament in legendary head coach Van Taylor's final season on the sideline.

However, under the direction of first-year head coach Lee Squires, the 2015 squad finished with a 14-3-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Now, as the 2016 season draws near, the Bearcats are focused on taking the next step.

NSHS Football game moved to tonight

The Ninety Six High School football game originally scheduled for Friday at Ridge View High School has been moved up for tonight.  According to a message received from Assistant Superintendent of Operations, Wally Hall, this move is a result of the potential heavy rains predicted from the oncoming hurricane Hermine.  The game will be played tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 at Ridge View High School.

The Ninety Six Band will not be traveling to this game.

Lander women's soccer aiming to bounce back in 2016

GREENWOOD – After six consecutive winning seasons, injuries and the always-tough Peach Belt Conference pushed the Lander women's soccer program back to a 7-8-1 record in 2015.

As the 2016 campaign draws near, the Bearcats have been focused on reclaiming the prestige they enjoyed in previous years.

Local Golf Club using Text Alerts for specials

Back in the day golf courses only communicated their specials through an occasional newspaper ad.  Then came facebook which is a common practice for most marketing today.  Now The Golf Club at Star Fort has implemented a Discounted Golf Text Alert for communicating their golfing specials.

Ironman Race? For Scott Elder, it was a simple decision.

As a four-year post player for the Lander men's basketball team, Elder was used to facing tough challenges. Before arriving in Greenwood, the native of Perth, Australia, had played in the U16 and U18 National Championships. He had played in 96 games for the Bearcats, going toe-to-toe with some of the most physical players the Peach Belt Conference had to offer. He had emerged from the court bruised and battered on countless occasions, paying the price for recurring rebound battles, starting 31 of 32 games his senior season at Lander.

The GHS Student Government Association (SGA) is organizing a drive to collect items for the flood victims in Louisiana (#LoveOnLouisiana). Items will be collected at GHS-Midland Valley football game on Friday night, Monday (8/29), and Tuesday (8/30) mornings.

Lander volleyball picked fourth in Peach Belt preseason coaches poll

The Lander volleyball team tied for fourth place in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches' poll it was announced by the league office Wednesday morning.

Lander is coming off a banner season in 2015 when it had program bests in total wins (25), Peach Belt Conference wins (11) and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time.

EHS Girls Varsity Golf beat GHS 184-209
The Emerald Girls Golf Team had a record setting day in defeating Greenwood by a score of 184 to 209. Emerald's team score of 184 was 4 shots better than the previous record of 188 set in 2013.

PCAG's Swim Team Returns for the Season

The Palmetto Christian Academy of Greenwood (PCAG) Swimming Lions started back the season Saturday with a splash. Despite the fact that PCAG swimmers had limited pool access this summer, the team did not let that deter them. The Swimming Lions, garbed in their “trade-marked red swimming caps”, held a total of seven state qualifications at Converse College’s Spartanburg Day School Invitational.

Jason Burke named Lander's head baseball coach

Jason Burke, a Palmetto State native who has spent the majority of his 11-year coaching career in the Carolinas, has been named the sixth head baseball coach in Lander University history, Interim Athletic Director Les Robinson announced today.

"My family and I are extremely excited to get to Greenwood and to get started," Burke said. "We're just honored and blessed to have this opportunity. Lander is such a great baseball program and such a great school and to be named the head coach here is definitely an honor.
