Golfing in the heat tips

As we experience extreme heat with temps in the 90’s, everyone need to think a little safety says Golf Pro Zach Calhoun of The Golf Club at Star Fort.  Yes, golf is popular in Greenwood and one of those sports where you are exposed to direct sunlight for hours at a time.  Calhoun has put together a few tips that may help keep you safe while enjoying the game you love so much.

PGA Junior League Golf New to Greenwood

PGA Junior League Golf has been brought back to Greenwood, where PGA Professional Tommy Pendley captains an impressive four teams made up of 39 boys and girls at The Links at Stoney Point. This year, a record of more than 40,000 boys and girls (as of June 2017) are participating in PGA Junior League Golf, surpassing the 36,000 participants across 2,900 teams in 2016.

4th annual Samuel Lander Golf Classic

Lander University alum, Jeremy Caldwell '06, lines up his shot during the 4th annual Samuel Lander Golf Classic held on Tuesday, June 27. Teeing off with a shotgun start, 26 teams of golfers scattered across the 18-hole lakeside course of The Links at Stoney Point to raise scholarship funds for college students at Lander University.

Alex Petock hired as Lander assistant volleyball coach

Lander University head volleyball coach Ashley Stathas announced on Thursday the hiring of Alex Petock as an assistant coach for the Bearcat volleyball program. Petock spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach at Highland Community College in Kansas.

"We are very excited to have Alex join our coaching staff," said Stathas. "She has a strong background in the setting position and we are looking forward to her working with our setters. Alex has a lot of energy and passion for coaching and she is going to be a great addition to our Bearcat family."

Lander's Carson Jones named to Coastal Plain League Select Team

Lander baseball player Carson Joneswas selected to the 2017 Coastal Plain League Select Team, the league announced today.

The team will face the USA Collegiate National Team on Monday, June 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Lander's Lofts receives Premier Developmental League honor

Lander men's soccer player Sam Lofts was named one of the top players in the Premier Developmental League for the week of June 14-20, the league announced today.

Lofts, a rising senior from Swindon, England, was tabbed as an honorable mention for the league's weekly awards. The Bearcat striker netted two goals on his first two shots of the season on Saturday for Tormenta FC in a 4-0 victory over SC United Bantams. The forward is the first Tormenta player to record multiple goals in a match this season. 

The Bearcats' leading scorer last fall, Lofts tallied 12 goals and four assists for a team-high 28 points.

The professional baseball season is under way for four former Bearcats. Lander has four players in Class A, while another awaits assignment for the 2017 season.

Lander's single season home run king begins his 2017 campaign on Monday night with the Batavia Muckdogs in the New York-Penn League. Daly spent last season in the Gulf Coast League, where he tallied 20 hits and 14 RBI.

Colby Lusignan -- 1B, Greensboro Grasshoppers (A - Miami Marlins) 
Season: 53 G, 27 R, 51 H, 13 2B, 3 3B, 4 HR, 34 RBI, 1 SB, .251 AVG
Lusignan's walkoff single on Thursday against Hagerstown sparked a four-game hitting streak for the Grasshopper first baseman. Greensboro's leading RBI producer is batting .300 over his last 10 games.

Three former Lander baseball players on pro rosters

The professional baseball season is under way for three former Bearcats. Lander has three players in Class A, while two others await assignment for the 2017 season. 

Colby Lusignan -- 1B, Greensboro Grasshoppers (A - Miami Marlins) 
Season: 48 G, 24 R, 45 H, 11 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 1 SB, .246 AVG
Lusignan is in his first season in Greensboro after splitting time between the New York-Penn League and the Gulf Coast League last year. He leads the Grasshoppers with 30 RBI and has recorded 10 hits in his last seven games.

Lander volleyball reveals 2017 schedule featuring 27 matches

The Lander volleyball program has announced its 2017 schedule, featuring 11 home matches and six matches against NCAA Tournament participants from last year. The campaign marks the 20th season of Bearcat volleyball.

"I am really looking forward to the opportunities that this year's schedule presents," said Lander head coach Ashley Stathas. "We have several off weekends that I think will offer our bodies some much needed rest. We are also playing in the PBC/SAC Crossover again this year, which will provide us with some great region competition."

Lander men's soccer schedule unveiled for 2017 season

Seven home matches and a pair of contests against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago highlight the Lander men's soccer schedule, which the reigning Peach Belt Conference regular season champions announced on Monday.

Lander is coming off a 2016 campaign that featured the program's first regular season title since 2012, a perfect 9-0 record in PBC play, return trips to both the PBC Tournament championship match and the NCAA Tournament and a second consecutive 14-win season as the Bearcats finished with 14-4-1 overall record.

Two Lander golfers named to PING All-Region team

Lander golfers Michal Pospisil and Conor Richards earned Division II PING All-Region honors, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced today.

Over 100 players across eight regions - East, Atlantic, Southeast, South, Midwest, South Central, Central and West - earned all-region honors for 2017.

Lakelands Toros U-11 win Publix Palmetto Cup

The Lakelands Toros U-11 team recently competed in the 2017 Publix Palmetto Cup tournament in Columbia.  They went undefeated and won the tournament in their division.

Symetra Tour kicks off Thursday

The Symetra Tour, the official qualifying Tour for the LPGA, returns to action after a week off with the fourth annual Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Women’s Health Classic at The Links at Stoney Point from Thursday, May 11 through Sunday, May 14. This is the seventh tournament of the 2017 season.

No. 7 Lander in 15th place at NCAA South/Southeast Regional

FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 7-ranked Lander men's golf team is 15th after the first day of play at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at the par-72, 7,407-yard Fighting Joe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail with a first-round total of 300. Lynn leads all teams after carding a four-under par, 284, in their round Monday, and lead second-place West Florida by two shots heading into the second round of play Tuesday.

FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 7-ranked Lander men's golf team takes on 19 other teams this week at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional at the par-72, 7,407-yard Fighting Joe at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Bearcats, who are making their sixth appearance in an NCAA Regional, are the No. 1 seed in the Southeast.

Lander baseball downs rival Erskine for 13th straight time

The Lander baseball team belted three home runs and pounded out 15 hits on Friday night, led by a 4-for-5 performance from Nathan Schreckengost, to defeat rival Erskine 10-9 in a non-conference game at Dolny Stadium.

The Lander baseball team placed five players on the Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic team, the PBC office announced today.

Tripper Ergle, Reed Gray, Robbie Hoyt, Carson Jones and Gatlin Minick earned all-academic honors for the Bearcats.

Local family proud to see Gaskin sign with Mars Hill

DeAndre Gaskin, a senior at Asheville High recently fulfilled a childhood dream; to play with his close friends at the next level.  Gaskin, a defensive end/tight end will now join his other Asheville graduates Reggie Battle, Reynolds Keyal Talbert and Edwin’s C. J. to play football at Mars Hill University.

Gaskin has family here in Greenwood County who are very proud of his accomplishments.
