Lander men's golf unveils 2018-19 slate, featuring nine tournaments

Lander men's golf head coach Mark Riddle released the 2018-19 schedule on Tuesday. The Bearcats will play a total of nine tournaments over the course of the regular season, highlighted by the Bearcat Classic, March 25-26, at the Greenwood Country Club.

Local Tennis Player - Lori Flick is finalist in the SunBurn Open Tennis Tournament
The doubles tennis team of Lori Flick, Greenwood, and Luke Whiteside, West Columbia, were finalists in the 2018  LATA Sunburn Open tournament held at the Lexington SC county tennis complex last weekend.

Lander women's golf releases 2018-19 schedule
The Lander women's golf team released its competition schedule for the 2018-19 season on Monday, as announced by head coach Mark Riddle.

The schedule features nine regular season tournaments, with four in the fall portion and five in the spring. The Bearcats will make trips to Florida, Georgia and North Carolina and Tennessee, as well as four tournaments scheduled in South Carolina.

Lander women's soccer hosting ID camp on August 4th

The Lander University women's soccer program will hold Summer ID camp on August 4 on the Lander campus.

The Lander Elite Summer ID Camp is designed to give each camper an inside look into what it means to be a collegiate soccer player. Campers will participate in two training sessions that will mirror sessions that the Lander soccer staff runs for its current team.

Lander Foundation Holds 5th Annual Samuel Lander Golf Classic

Golfers from around the southeast teed off at the Greenwood Country Club for the Lander Foundation’s 5th Annual Samuel Lander Golf Classic on Tuesday, June 26. The tournament raised over $12,000 to benefit the Lander University Scholarship Program, according to Executive Director of Alumni Affairs Denise Manley ‘89.

Bob Dachille tabbed as first Lander women's lacrosse head coach

Bob Dachille, who led the Erskine and Presbyterian women's lacrosse programs over the past seven seasons, has been named the first head coach of the Lander women's lacrosse program according to an announcement from athletics director Brian Reese Monday.

Lander announces 2018 men's soccer schedule

Lander head coach Lee Squires announced the 2018 men's soccer schedule on Friday.

The 16-match regular-season schedule features seven matches inside Van Taylor Stadium, as well as three contests against NCAA Tournament teams from a season ago.

"As ever at this time of year, the excitement is building week by week for preseason," said Squires. "We have a challenging schedule but a lot of experienced players returning who will help guide the new players. It's important to get off to a good start with our early home games before several challenging non-conference games and an always tough PBC schedule. Each game in our region is a tough one, but we will work hard to try and be playing our best soccer come November."

While some players are getting much-needed rest, there are 12 Bearcats on rosters in six different collegiate summer leagues.

Lander Athletics to add men's volleyball in 2019-20

Lander Athletics Director Brian Reese has announced the addition of men's volleyball as a varsity sport beginning in 2019-20.

"I am very excited to announce the creation of the men's volleyball program here at Lander," said Reese. "Men's volleyball is a growing sport and will provide a great opportunity for young men to continue playing a game they love while receiving an elite education here at Lander. This program will serve as an excellent addition to the culture of our athletics program."

Greenwood Eagles hosting Summer Break Wrestling Clinic

The Greenwood Eagles will host their Summer Break Wrestling Clinic starting Monday, June 18 through Thursday, June 21.  The clinic will be held at the GHS Auxiliary Gym from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. each day.  The cost is $15 per day.  $10 per day for each child if you have 2 or more children.  Registration will be held on site.  For more information email mountzn@gwd50.org or call (864) 554-8669.

Lander volleyball announces 2018 schedule featuring 29 matches

The Lander volleyball team announced its 2018 schdule on Sunday, featuring 10 regular-season home matches and nine matches against teams that reached the Division II NCAA Tournament last year. The Bearcats will play 17 non-conference matches, six against in-state opponents, and 12 Peach Belt Conference matches.

Lander Athletics announces addition of men's wrestling program

GREENWOOD – Lander Athletics today unveiled a plan to add a men's wrestling program to the athletic department. 

Lander will become just the fourth NCAA Division II wrestling program in the state and will begin competition during the 2019-20 academic year.

Lander women's golf signs 2018-19 recruiting class

The Lander women's golf team has signed its first recruiting class since being reinstated last August, as head coach Mark Riddle has brought in 10 players for the 2018-19 season. The Bearcats will be playing for the first time since the fall of 2015.

The incoming class features seven freshmen, two sophomores and one junior.

Lander Athletics to add men's and women's lacrosse

Lander University will add men's and women's lacrosse to its NCAA Division II varsity sports offerings, athletics director Brian Reese announced Tuesday. Both teams will begin competition in the spring of 2020.

Six Lander baseball players named to Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team

The Lander baseball team placed six players on the Peach Belt Conference's All-Academic team, the PBC office announced today.

Bailey Connell, Mike Fitschen, Ryan Flores, Robbie Hoyt, Carson Jones and Colton Yeagerearned all-academic honors for the Bearcats. 

To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.

Carolina-Demarini 12U takes first place in USSSA tournament

Team Carolina-Demarini 12U wins 13U USSSA Baseball tournament held in Greenville, SC.  The 12U team played up in age vs 13U teams and finished 1st out of 5 teams winning 9-1 in the championship game.

Lander's Richards named semifinalist for Jack Nicklaus Award

Lander's Conor Richards has been named a semifinalist for the 2018 Division II Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award presented by Barbasol. Division II finalists for the award will be named May 17. Nicklaus Award recipients will be announced May 31 with the honor presented by Jack Nicklaus at a ceremony during the final round of the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Grimes, Ferguson named to All-Peach Belt Conference softball team

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Sophomore Sydney Grimes and senior McKenzi Ferguson were tabbed as All-Peach Belt Conference selection it was announced Thursday night at the annual awards banquet at the University of North Georgia. Grimes was named first-team All-PBC, while Ferguson was named second-team all-conference.

"The Drop" raises over $70,000 for Lander Athletics

Lander Athletics held its inaugural Emerald Ink & Stitches "The Drop" on Saturday night at Dolny Stadium. Over 300 Lander supporters were on hand to enjoy great food and entertainment from Greenwood's own "Bad Weather States."

Game Summary:  In the game of the night, the Young Guns and Fireflies traded blows back and forth, going into extra innings to decide a victor.  The Fireflies took an early 6-2 lead.  However, in the 4th inning, the Young Guns loaded up the bases, and got a key hit from Cooper Chrisley, who put a well-placed hit into right field resulting in a grand slam to tie the game at 6-6.
