Purdie scores 22 as Lander men's basketball shuts down Wingate 76-59

GREENWOOD – Junior guard Rahu Purdie scored 22 points as the Lander Bearcats used an 18-6 run in the second half to pull away from Wingate University 76-59 Tuesday night in Lander's home opener at Horne Arena.

The Bearcats improved to 2-1 on the season while Wingate fell to 2-3.

McKenith scores 25 as No. 24 Lander upsets No. 6 Wingate

GREENWOOD – Lander senior guard Mylea McKenith scored 25 points including two crucial late free throws as the No. 24-ranked Bearcats built a 22-point lead in the first half and held off No. 6 Wingate 81-76 Tuesday night at Horne Arena.

The Bearcats earned their second win over a ranked team, improving to 3-1 on the season. Wingate is also 3-1.

Lander's Whipple earns All-Peach Belt Conference second team honors

Milledgeville, Ga. – Lander volleyball's Reyonia Whipple was named to the All-Peach Belt Conference second team, it was announced tonight at the PBC's annual banquet at Georgia College.

Whipple, a 5-8 senior from Brunswick, Ga., leads the PBC in total blocks (121) and blocks per set (1.23) this season. She is Lander's all-time leader in career block assists with 396 in her Bearcat career and is the fifth different Lander player to earn all-PBC honors in the last six seasons. The Bearcats have put a player on the all-PBC team every year since 2012. 

Lander enters the Peach Belt Conference tournament as the No. 5-seed and will take on Augusta tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., in Milledgeville, Ga.

Lander's Skelton, Chretien named to D2CCA Men's Soccer All-Region Squad

The Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) announced its 2017 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer All-Southeast Region team on Wednesday, featuring a pair of Lander men's soccer players.

Junior defender Jordan Skelton (Newcastle, England) received first team accolades, while freshman midfielder Thibault Chretien (Laval, France) earned second team. It marks the second consecutive year that two Bearcats have garnered D2CCA all-region honors.

Spikes Baseball hosting Winter Break Camp

Spikes Baseball will be hosting a Winter Break Camp on December 21 and 22 from 8am-12pm. Early drop off can be an option at 7am.  Players will learn fundamentals based on age for hitting, fielding, running, pitching and catching. Baseball season is coming soon and this is a good time to begin preparing the right way.  Cost is $50, those interested can submit an online form here.

Lander men's soccer awarded No. 3 seed in NCAA Southeast Regional

The No. 23-ranked Lander men's soccer team received the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Southeast Regional when the bracket was announced on Monday night. It's the Bearcats' third straight appearance in the postseason and 12th overall.

No. 23 Lander wins shootout over North Georgia to claim PBC Championship

Evans, Ga. – It took 110 minutes and 18 penalty kicks, but the Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament trophy is making a long-awaited return to Greenwood. 

The No. 23-ranked and top-seeded Lander Bearcats outlasted third-seeded North Georgia 9-8 in PKs after playing to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtime periods to capture the program's fifth tournament championship and first since 2009.

Lander wins two awards, lands six on all-PBC team at men's soccer banquet

Evans, Ga. – In the midst of a stellar 2017 season, the Lander men's soccer team nabbed two conference awards and placed six players on all-conference teams at the Peach Belt Conference men's soccer banquet on Thursday night. Freshman midfielder Thibault Chretien was honored as the league's co-Freshman of the Year, while third-year head coach Lee Squires collected his second consecutive Coach of the Year award.

Four men's soccer players named to PBC All-Academic team

Seniors Ian Foulger and Sam Lofts, junior Jordan Skelton and sophomore Dean Cowdroy were the four members of the Lander men's soccer team that were named to the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer All-Academic team, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

No. 15 Lander in ninth after 36 holes at McDonough Cup

Orlando, Fla. – The No. 15-ranked Lander men's golf team stands in ninth place after 36 holes of the McDonough Cup at the Rio Pinar Country Club.

Sophomore Conor Richards (73-74=147, +3) stood out as the Bearcats' top performer on Monday, moving into a tie for seventh with a second round of two-under. The Hampshire, England, native has been in the top-10 after each round thus far.

Lander women's basketball tops Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

GREENWOOD – For the second consecutive year, the Lander women's basketball team was voted first in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced on Thursday. The Bearcats collected 116 points and eight first-place votes to earn the top spot ahead of Columbus State, which tallied 111 points. The PBC is coming off a 2016-17 season that saw three teams earn NCAA Tournament bids.

The No. 17-ranked Lander men's soccer team's comeback effort fell short as the Bearcats suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Queens in an upset at Van Taylor Stadium on Wednesday night.

Lander defeated 3-0 by Georgia College to wrap home portion of season

The Lander women's soccer team found itself in an early hole on Wednesday night and were unable to rally, eventually falling 3-1 to visiting Georgia College at Van Taylor Stadium. 

"I think the girls played well tonight," said head coach Chris Ayer. "We had a five minute period in the second half were it just fell apart, but the girls worked really hand and fought their way back a little bit. The ball moved pretty well off the feet, we were just unlucky a little bit in the final third. We have to continue to work to get better."

Knight named Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week

GREENWOOD – Sophomore George Knight of the Lander men's soccer team was tabbed Peach Belt Conference Defender of the Week as announced by the league Monday afternoon.

Knight played a crucial role in the No. 17 Bearcats' 2-1 win over Carson-Newman on Saturday night, improving Lander's record to 10-2-1 overall. The Basingstoke, England native guided the Lander defense as the Bearcats stretched their unbeaten streak to eight consecutive matches. The Bearcat back line held the Eagles to 11 total shots, five of those on goal. Carson-Newman's goal came on a free kick. Knight also contributed to the offense, scoring the first goal of the match and putting in a cross for an assist on the second. Lander is currently second in the PBC with a 1.16 goals allowed average.

Cooper Neimand joins Lander men's basketball coaching staff

Cooper Neimand has joined the Lander men's basketball program as an assistant coach, head men's basketball coach Steve Roberts announced Thursday.

Neimand joins the Bearcats following four seasons on the coaching staff at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, N.C.. He replaces Jarred Jackson who left the program this summer to take a graduate assistant position at Texas Tech.

Lander falls by a score of 1-0 against UNC Pembroke

Pembroke, N.C. – The Lander women's soccer team (7-6, 3-5 PBC) fell on the road against UNC Pembroke (10-3-1, 5-1-1 PBC) by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday night. The Braves made the most of their three shots on goal for the match and converted on the team's third opportunity with the game-winning goal.

Lander rides momentum with 3-1 win over Limestone

Gaffney, S.C. – The Lander volleyball team (12-7, 2-4 PBC) defeated Limestone 3-1 on Tuesday as the Bearcats continued their momentum from last weekend's come-from-behind victory against Tusculum.

Similarly to the team's last outing, the Bearcats fell behind early against Limestone (4-11, 4-6 CC). The Saints took the first set by a 25-20 margin after winning the set's final five points.

Lander splits with Carson-Newman, Lincoln Memorial at PBC/SAC Crossover

GREENWOOD – The Lander volleyball team shook off an opening loss to snap a six-match skid on Friday afternoon in the first day of the PBC/SAC Crossover at Horne Arena. 

Lander (10-6) fell to Carson-Newman 22-25, 25-27, 24-26 before defeating Lincoln Memorial 25-23, 25-14, 25-21.

Lander unveils 2018 slate featuring three NCAA Tournament opponents

Three opponents that reached the 2017 NCAA Division II Softball Championship and eight matchups against teams that played in conference tournament championship games highlight the Lander softball team's 2018 schedule.

It'll be the third season for the Bearcats under the direction of head coach Glen Crawford. Lander is searching for its second Peach Belt Conference Tournament appearance in three years and its first NCAA Tournament bid in program history.

Lander notches second straight shutout with 1-0 win at Mars Hill

Mars Hill, N.C. – The Lander women's soccer team got a first half goal from Sara Flores and kept Mars Hill off the scoreboard to earn a 1-0 win on the road Tuesday night in its final non-conference match of the year. The Bearcats (7-4) have now pieced together their third winning streak of the season.

Lander's Richards selected as Peach Belt Golfer of the Week

GREENWOOD – Lander's Conor Richards, a sophomore from Hampshire, England, was named the Peach Belt Conference Golfer of the Week after finishing in a tie for second at the UNG Invitational.

Richards fired rounds of 74-66-69 to finish seven under par. The sophomore was just one stroke out of the lead and helped the team to a second-place finish in the 13-team field. His second-round 66 was tied for the best round of the tournament and for the second-lowest (relative to par) round in the PBC this season. Richards has two top 10s in two events this season; the top five at the UNG Fall Invitational was the second of his career. He is currently second in the PBC with a 70.50 stroke average.

Lander men's soccer senior Sam Lofts (Swindon, England) capped his week with his selection as the United Soccer Coaches Division II National Player of the Week.

Lofts was recognized as the Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week on Monday.
