Lander rallies to upset No. 21 Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Lander women's basketball team outscored 21st-ranked Limestone 27-14 in the fourth quarter and erased a late six-point deficit as the Bearcats notched an 81-72 win over the Saints at the Timken Center on Wednesday night. 

With the win, Lander, 5-2 overall, snapped Limestone's 38-game regular-season home winning streak. The Saints, who drop to 6-3 with the loss, had not been beaten at the Timken Center in the regular season since January 11, 2014. 

The victory is Lander's 17th in its last 18 meetings with Limestone. 

Four Bearcats scored in double-figures, led by Breshay Johnson's 27 points and 18 rebounds. Ty'hesha Reynolds netted 19 points, Mylea McKenith added 18 points and Jessica Harris finished with 15 on the night. 

Jasmine Kearse led Limestone with 21 points and four rebounds, while Keidra Smith totaled 20 points and collected seven rebounds.

The Saints took their biggest lead of the night at 50-37 with with 6:42 to go in the third quarter, but a 10-0 run from Lander trimmed the advantage to 50-47 with 3:46 left in the period. A layup from Johnson put the Bearcats up 53-52 with 1:42 to go in the quarter, their first lead since 3-0. 

With Lander trailing by two with 4:30 remaining in the game, McKenith connected on a jumper to spark a 10-0 Bearcat run that culminated with a Jessica Harris basket at the 1:36 mark, putting Lander ahead 75-67. Limestone cut the lead to 75-70, but the Bearcats connected on six of the their final eight free throws to seal the upset win.

Lander connected on 28-of-69 shots (40.6 percent), including 5-of-21 threes (23.8 percent) and 20-of-25 foul shots (80 percent).

Limestone shot 28-of-62 from the floor (45.2 percent) and connected on 12-of-29 threes (41.4 percent), while going 4-of-8 (50 percent) from the free throw line.
