HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Lander softball team wrapped up the Coker Spring Tournament with a win over King and a loss to Lincoln Memorial University on Sunday. The Bearcats defeated King 4-3 and fell to Lincoln Memorial 6-3.
Lander moves to 7-9 on the season.
The Bearcats scored all of their runs against King in the second inning. Casey Kent laid down a bunt that plated Chandler Carey, then beat out the throw that allowed Reychel Webster to race home. MaKenzie Smith then drove home Kent with a single later in the inning and Brianna Surrento plated Destiny Clyde on a groundout to put Lander up 4-0.
King rallied for three runs in the sixth inning on solo home runs from Hannah Riddle and Michaela Morris and an RBI single from Hayley Smothers, but Surrento closed out the game to give Lander the win.
Hannah Newton (2-1) earned the win for Lander, walking two and allowing two earned runs on four hits in five innings pitched. Surrento picked up her first save of the season, allowing one run on one hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings.
Smith and Chandler Carey each recorded two hits to lead Lander at the plate.
McKenzi Ferguson (3-5) took the loss in the second game against LMU after striking out three and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in five innings.
Lander took a 2-0 lead on a first inning home run from Surrento and a RBI single from Madison Moore in the third.
Lincoln Memorial trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Meredith Johnson and took the lead for good on a three-run homer from Dakotah Fraley and a two-run homer from BriAnna Schrimpf in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bearcats capped the scoring in the top of the seventh on a sac fly from Moore that scored Clyde.
Smith went 3-for-3 at the plate for Lander.
