Lander women's basketball tops Peach Belt Conference preseason poll

GREENWOOD – For the second consecutive year, the Lander women's basketball team was voted first in the Peach Belt Conference preseason coaches poll, the conference office announced on Thursday. The Bearcats collected 116 points and eight first-place votes to earn the top spot ahead of Columbus State, which tallied 111 points. The PBC is coming off a 2016-17 season that saw three teams earn NCAA Tournament bids. 

The Bearcats return D2CCA Southeast Region Player of the Year and PBC Player of the Year Breshay Johnson, as well co-PBC Defensive Player of the Year Mylea McKenith. The two preseason All-PBC honorees led Lander to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, the Bearcats' deepest postseason run since 2011-12.

Defending PBC and Southeast Regional champion Columbus State received four first-place votes in the poll. Francis Marion finished third in the poll after an 18-12 season last year. Clayton State, a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season, was voted to finish fourth with 90 points, while North Georgia finished fifth with 77 points.

Sixth in the poll is USC Aiken with 69 points. Georgia College was voted to finish seventh in the poll, edging UNC Pembroke by four points. 

Flagler is predicted to place ninth in the league with 40 points, followed by Augusta. Rounding out the polling is Georgia Southwestern with 30 points and Young Harris with 19.

Lander's 2017-18 season tips off on Nov. 10 against Lincoln Memorial in Aiken, S.C.
