After helping Lander start the 2018 season with a sweep, freshman Ashley Vinson was named the Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
The recognition from the PBC marks the first Freshman of the Week award for Lander since 2010, when Shelby Spencer and Marilyn Newman were honored. Vinson tossed two shutout innings of relief and batted 2-for-3 with an RBI in her collegiate debut as the Bearcats defeated Mars Hill 6-2. The Union, S.C., native drove in three runs in the second game of the day, including a two-run homer.
In total, the freshman finished opening weekend with a .667 average (4-for-6) to lead the Bearcats, driving in four and scoring two runs. In the circle, she allowed just three hits with one strikeout over 2.0 innings.
Lander returns to action this weekend at the Bearcat Classic.
