Matty Evans hired as Lander assistant men's soccer coach

Lander men's soccer head coach Lee Squires announced on Monday the addition of Matty Evans as an assistant coach with the Bearcats. Evans comes to Lander after serving as an assistant coach at West Chester during the 2017 season.

"We are delighted to be able to bring in a coach of Matty's quality," said Squires, who is entering his fourth season with the Bearcats. "He's young, focused, comes highly recommended, and has experience of coaching in the national tournament. He's played to a high level as a goalkeeper and knows how to instruct and lead, so our keepers will benefit from those specific qualities, as will the rest of the team from his experiences and knowledge. Matty will help us in all aspects of pushing the program on this fall."

Last season, Evans helped West Chester compile 14 wins and earn a No. 17 final ranking. The Golden Rams won the regular season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship with a perfect 11-0 record, becoming the first PSAC team to ever go 11-0 in league play. West Chester won its first NCAA Tournament match since 1967 and advanced to the Sweet 16.

Prior to joining the Golden Rams, Evans spent a year at Seton Hill, where he served as a student assistant for the men's and women's soccer teams.

Evans began his collegiate career at Genesee Community College, where he played two seasons before transferring to Seton Hill. As a goalkeeper for the Griffins, Evans set a PSAC record with eight shutouts during the 2015 regular season as Seton Hill set a program record with 12 wins. Evans started 36 matches for the Griffins, notching 131 saves with a .744 save percentage. Off the field, Evans was a two-time PSAC scholar-athlete and a recipient of the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award.

In 2016, Evans started eight matches in goal for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the Premier Development League.

A native of Bedford, England, Evans graduated from Seton Hill in 2017 with a bachelor's in science.
