Lander falls to Erskine in rivalry doubleheader

GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team managed just five hits and two runs on Wednesday night as the Bearcats fell to Erskine in a pair of contests at Doug Spears Field.

The Bearcats (19-13) dropped the non-conference doubleheader by scores of 2-1 and 5-1.

Taylor Antley gave Erskine (17-11) a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game one with a two-out, two-run single. From there, Fleet pitcher Morgan Hendrix (9-3) held the Bearcats to just three hits to earn the complete-game victory. Lander's lone run of the game came on an RBI single from Halie Sorrow in the bottom of the fourth.

McKenzi Ferguson (13-5) was tagged with the loss after going the distance and allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Erskine took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in game two and extended the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third.

Hahhan Houge (4-5) did not allow a base runner until Sorrow's led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single. Dariean Ward put the Bearcats on the board two batters later with an RBI single, the only run Houge would allow on the evening. The freshman limited Lander to two hits with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Brianna Surrento (5-6) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.

Lander hosts No. 2 North Georgia at Doug Spears Field on Saturday at 12:00 p.m and 2:00 p.m.
