Throughout February and March, the Lakelands Toros Soccer Club operated a free after school soccer program at Springfield Elementary School to give free coaching to students after school. During the course of this program, 120 students spanning from kindergarten to fifth grade participated in the hour-long program on Wednesday afternoons.
Springfield Principal, Patrick Gardner said, “It’s been great having the Toros coaches at Springfield each week working with our students on the game of soccer. The kids were active, well supervised, and all smiles each week during the soccer club.” Not only does the program promote the growth and development of soccer, but also the growth of outdoor exercise. Toros President Lloyd Willis says “We have designed this program to promote physical activity, to give children a chance to experience a team environment, and to introduce them to the game we love. We want to share soccer with every child in Greenwood, and we hope to continue to pursue this goal in partnership with Greenwood District 50.”
The program has successfully provided great coaching and experience to younger kids in the community. Gardner added, “We appreciate the Lakelands Toros Soccer Club bringing the game of soccer to our school for so many students to experience.” Though the program just ended, the club hopes to expand this afterschool program to more schools in the future.
