Lander takes game one to split with Georgia College

The Lander softball team earned a Peach Belt Conference split with one of the league's top teams on Sunday afternoon as the Bearcats took game one over Georgia College, 6-3, before falling 10-3 in game two at Doug Spears Field.

Lander (21-17, 5-9 PBC) took the lead in game one on Chandler Carey's solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Casey Wooten beat out an infield single and stole second to move into scoring position. Lander then unloaded with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Sydney GrimesKelli McCormack and Kasey Rogers to surge ahead 4-0.

Georgia College (27-11, 8-2 PBC) got on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth, but the Bearcats answered as Rogers laced a two-run single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the fifth, giving her a career-high three RBI on the day.

A two-run homer from Caitlyn Davis in the top of the seventh pulled Georgia College to within 6-3, but McKenzi Ferguson finished off the Bobcats to give Lander the win.

Ferguson (15-6) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Georgia College's Jessie Morris (7-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings.

The Bearcats struck first in game two as McCormack launched a two-run shot to left field in the top of the first to put Lander up 2-0.

Georgia College threatened with runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the fifth, but Ferguson came out of the bullpen and allowed only a squeeze bunt as Lander held the Bobcats to a lone run. Lander answered in the bottom of the inning as Halie Sorrow snuck a ball just inside the left field foul pole for her fifth home run of the season, putting the Bearcats up 3-1.

Down to their final six out, the Bobcats avoided its first conference sweep of the season by rallying for seven runs in the sixth inning and tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to secure a split of the doubleheader.

Ferguson (15-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief. Rebecca Lawrence (7-4) went the distance to pick up the win for the Bobcats, allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Lander travels to USC Aiken on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
