Lander falls prey to big inning in 14-10 loss to Anderson

GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team could not overcome a 10-run fifth inning by Anderson on Tuesday night as the Trojans posted a 14-10 win at Dolny Stadium.

Lander (12-25) fell behind 2-0 on a home run in the top of the first before Alex Conaway's first home run of the season cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning. The Trojans (16-23) answered with another two-run blast in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead, but Lander responded as Zack Moore scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 4-2. Justin Wager then singled into right field to plate Conner Davis and Colton Yeager's two-run single put the Bearcats ahead 5-4 entering the fifth inning.

Anderson, however, broke the game open with 10 runs in the fifth as Lander used four pitchers in the frame.

The Bearcats showed some power in the late innings, as Carson Jones blasted home runs in the bottom of the sixth and ninth to bring the Bearcats within six runs. Moore followed Jones' ninth inning homer with a round-tripper of his own and a sacrifice fly from Alex Conaway cut the Anderson lead to 14-10 with one out in the ninth. However, the Bearcats could not complete the comeback as Anderson held on for the victory.

Ryan Troutman (1-2) took the loss for Lander, allowing four runs on three hits in 0.2 innings, while the Trojans' Christian Carpenter (3-3) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on two hits.

Lander hosts Georgia Southwestern in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
