Lander rebounds with sweep of Mount Olive to end weekend

The Lander volleyball team rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 3-0 sweep of Mount Olive at the Augusta Tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats took the match by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 26-24.

Hannah Hritz had 13 kills and hit .464 on an error-free day to lead the Bearcats (2-1). Kaitlyn Krafka tallied a career-high 15 digs and added 13 kills for her first career double-double. Reilly Kuenstler hit .400 with eight kills and 1.5 blocks, while Madilyn Reed led the team with 33 assists and recorded 12 digs for a double-double, the first of her career. The Bearcats finished the day with 10 service aces, as Reed, Hannah McManus and Boo Luther each tallied three.

Ania Keene and Cyerra Carter led the Trojans (0-3) with five kills each as the Bearcats held Mount Olive to a .080 hitting percentage. Kamber Skeen recorded a double-double for the Trojans with 13 assists and 12 digs.

Lander broke a 13-13 tie in the first set by winning 12 of the final 13 points, capped by Luther's service ace. Trailing 6-4 in the second set, the Bearcats reeled off nine consecutive points, including two more Luther aces, to take control of the set and claim a 2-0 lead.

Mount Olive fought back in the third set, jumping out to a 15-7 lead, and faced set point with a 24-21 lead. However, Lander rallied with back-to-back kills from Hritz and a setting error from the Trojans to tie the game at 24-24. A kill from Kuenstler gave the Bearcats their first lead of the set and McManus wrapped up the match her third service ace of the day.

Lander returns to action this weekend at the Fleet Classic in Due West, S.C. The Bearcats will face rival Erskine and West Georgia on Friday before playing Virginia-Wise and North Greenville on Saturday.
