GREENWOOD – The Lander women's soccer team was picked seventh in the Peach Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll on Tuesday. The Bearcats received 45 points and came in behind first-place Columbus State (98 points), North Georgia (84), Flagler (81), UNC Pembroke (79), Young Harris (62) and Georgia College (60).
Lander is coming off an 8-8 season in 2017.
The team returns six of its 11 starters from last season, including Emily Jermstad, who led the team with three assists, and Juliette Vidal, who tallied two goals and two assists.
Also returning to the starting lineup from 2017 is midfielder Victoria Lange, defenders Brennen McCarthy and Kylee Eppl, and goalkeeper Sarah Owen. Head coach Chris Ayer returns for his 13th season with Lander and has a 107-81-14 (.564) record, making him the winningest coach in program history.
The 2018 season kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 30, at North Greenville. The Bearcats play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 1, against Mars Hill at 7:00 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
