AJGA National Junior Golf Tournament comes to Greenwood

The American Junior Golf Association will come to Greenwood for the first time to host the Greenwood Junior Championship. The Links at Stoney Point will host the 54-hole national junior golf tournament, July 28 – August 1, 2019. The field will consist of 78 boys and girls (ages 12-19) from around the country and the world.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. AJGA alumni include Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Ariya Jutanugarn, Cristie Kerr, Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Anna Nordqvist, Inbee Park and Lexi Thompson.

The tournament begins like a PGA TOUR or LPGA Tour event with an 18-hole AJGA Qualifying Tournament held on Sunday before the event. This gives players the opportunity to “play their way in” to the main tournament. Monday will feature official practice rounds and the tournament will begin Tuesday with the first round and run through Thursday. An awards ceremony will follow the final round.

The Links at Stoney Point Golf Club has most recently hosted the LPGA Symetra Tour’s Self Regional Healthcare Foundation Women’s Health Classic. In 2018, Vicky Hurst won the event. Hurst was a decorated member of the AJGA with seven AJGA wins and Rolex Junior All-America Team honors in 2006 and 2007.

The event is free and open to the public. Spectators are encouraged to attend the event and see the next generation of PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour stars. The Links at Stoney Point is located at 709 Swing About, Greenwood, SC 29649.
